Gabe Newell: Valve E3 Surprise Isn't Episode 3

i am CONVINCED that the surprise is the new source Engine, because all the games of valve seem to be in a state of development that a new engine would make sense, cmon valve lets seee

Half life 3
Left 4 Dead 3
Team Fortress 3
Day of Defeat 3
Counter Strike: watchmacallit

Yeah I'm inclined to agree with you there so I'm guessing E3 is going to be more of a Source v2.0 showcase. That might be kind of cool though so we shall see how it all plays out.

Counter strike would certainly be a big surprise, but I doubt it's that. Team fortress for mac, on the new source engine would be pretty sweet, though hardly big enough to be a big surprise.
I'm guessing new IP here, it'd make the most sense.

*snivel* As much as i like valve, i cant help but feel slightly cynical about the whole thing. If you withdraw portal 2 from E3 and say "it's a surprise" instead, then of course people will think it's ep.3. They should straight off the bat say that it's a surprise and it's NOT ep.3.

It completely detracts from the "surprise" when you know that the excitement your causing is about something entirely different. Which i think is a shame.

UNLESS.. they're bluffing aren't they? BLUFFING! They are obviously going to unveil Ep.3 after all! And it's gonna be soooooo good! cant wait.

Episode 3 has been dead ever since Lonbardi said Valve was going back to the monolithic style development program.
It's probably Half Life 3, or at least the next version of the engine, the one they've been hiring PS3 devs to build.

This. Maybe they've scrapped the idea of making half a game based on a title that's about six years old, and just made an entirely new HL game. It would make sense - nobody needs three years for what's essentially glorified DLC.

TBH the whole HL2 overhype has turned me off the game before I ever looked at getting it.

I remember when HL2 - Episode 1 came out and Newell said it would be a brave new way to release a game by splitting it up into smaller parts - helping their production cycle and bringing out content faster and easier.

I think its blatantly obvious now why its such an awful idea - Companies change their minds a lot. On Everything. And compartmentalized content can be given up if a company gets bored or changes its focus.

With a 1 stop 1 game product, at least you get an ending (semi) guaranteed.

We'll be lucky if we ever see the ending to Half Life 2.

I seriously doubt we'll ever see Episode 3, because it's been so long since Episode 2 they might as well scrap the whole thing and pick up the story where they left off by starting work on Half-Life 3 itself. Maybe that's the surprise?
