Holy shit, this is a real article

EDIT: Wow, core memory unlocked. I had a copy of this with a torn label and my folks threw it away because it was "too violent".

The only reason I know about this game is because Unskippable did an episode on it like a decade ago.

I miss Unskippable.

Artstyle is always more interesting anyways. Also kinda weird they chose games for the thumbnail that are in the video the least if at all though too. Two of them are even still critically acclaimed despite the realism factor.

I don't know why the AI keeps giving Blaze blonde hair halfway into the video. They should really fix that.

Red Dead 2 has some decent gameplay, but goes too far in the other direction of railroading the player (failing them for deviating the path). Or adds in extra unnecessary details, for the sake of "immersion and realism". The Last of Us Part 2 has the problem of going so far on the "realistic", gritty, nihilistic, dark, and overly gory tone, while trying to take itself so seriously, that it's disingenuous and just stupid. The game is pretty much a glorified snuff film and torture porn as far as I'm concerned. Yes, more than either Manhunt game can be.

RDR2 should’ve done something to allow for abandoning missions vs just being locked into one and having a fail screen for not following the yellow line or whatever. Some of this is understandable to create good pacing and a mood. The assault on a Brathwaite manor wouldn’t have had the same effect if the player were allowed to stealth and flank around the place. Often times you’re with companions and have to stick together and follow a plan (no pun, Dutch).

Flip side of that there was a lot of solo stuff where more player agency should’ve been possible within missions. There are some nice cases of this, like having several hidden ways to break Micah out of jail, and some of the side quests have cool cause and effect details depending on how you act, but they are the exception.

It’s basically of game of two halves; the other being free roam where a lot of player agency is granted. It would have just been nice if the two were blended together better so it felt more consistent.
