Duke Nukem, He teaches us that once u run out of bubble gum it's time too kick some ass
I thought Rowdy Roddy Piper taught us that.
yeah well Duke Nukem is more well known then a crappy movie so I stick with Duke Nukem...
A Crappy Movie? Where the hell did that come from?
By that I mean it got Bad reviews so not many people watched it besides this is a gaming website so more poeple would know Duke Nukem even If the phrase is from another movie. and If ur asking why I said movie it's because the phrase came from an older movie where the main character walks into a bank says his line(not as well as Mr.Nukem) and shoots people.

On fictional characters: Who hasn't been inspired by legendary figures who may or may not be real? The first example I can think of is King Arthur, not so much today but for generations he inspired gallantry and courage in a nation. Admitedly he doesn't grow so much but look at many books and you see characters change. Evey from V for Vendetta, the german officer whose name I can't remember form Captain Corelli's mandolin. Not to mention the young fisher man from the same book who changes for the worse. Fictional characters can serve as good examples. I agree that not many characters undergo such changes but those that do are the truly great ones.
OT: Hmm, I'm not sure I have a role model character but there are plenty to empathise with, one of the best being Altair from Assassin's creed.
Edit: @ squid: you have an awesome avatar.

Hmm, video game characters should not be role models.
Damn ninja'ed.

I would go so far as to say any fictional character shouldn't be considered a role model.
It doesn't matter if it's real, fiction, or even impractical. The important part is the message they recieve from the role model. If you like your life honestly and with good intention because of a role model why should it matter if it's not a real person?
The big issue (and I was going to edit this in) is most of the heroes are flawless. They have no personal demons to overcome and therefore learn from them. Very rarely does a hero grow on a personal level. I would much rather see a child learn from say a baseball player who kicks a drug addiction and goes on to win the world series than a hero who starts and ends as the hero.
Ah but what if that real life role model doesn't make it? if they go back to just being a waste? The person using them as a role model would lose hope and even sometimes fall to the same fate depending on the situation. The way I see it with a fictional character, you can always use some imagination about what they can do or overcome. very rarely would you have that role model fail compared to the chance you take with real life.

Honestly, that was probably the most true statement I've read in a good while.

So true, in fact, that I am left with nothing else to say.

Not really good role models:

Mario- Be a fat, drugged up plumber with questionable facial hair. He also teaches kids to be a doormat by repeatedly saving the princess, he's an enabler.

Link- Teaches us to always hang out with the weird kids (Tingle, Navi, weird guy from the boat in WW, Half-chicken/ half-man thing from twilight princess.)

Is there a video game character that tells you to act how you want and create your own beliefs? If so, he's probably my role model.

How did I forget about the drugs and enabling? I don't see anything wrong with the facial hair, though. That's an awesome 'stache in my book.

And Link teaches us that even the weird kids need love, just have a sword when talking to them.

That is exactly the point. When was the last time Link failed? Putting all your faith into him is setting you up for a bigger fall than Barry Bonds (that is is his name right? Baseball player that was good but found out he was cheating in some way) is proving an invaluable lesson. That humans are flawed. That we struggle for perfection. That we are not infallible. Most of the fictional role models start off perfect and end the same way. I am in no way saying thier message is wrong. It is just the fictional ones make it look so easy that it could discourage a youth from being heroic once they discover that it isn't as easy as Link made it look.

Link being an example here. Could be substituted with any other fictional hero
