He also made the interesting point that Game's stores in the U.K. aren't the problem and pointed the finger at company executives for not taking action sooner. "The real shame about that is the fact that it's not the U.K. or Spain that has caused this predicament. It is France, Australia and Scandinavia that has been losing big money for a long time," he continued. "You have to wonder why someone somewhere within Game didn't notice that and do something about it sooner. Those stores should have been closed."
I guess some people have to learn the hard way that real life isn't like Mass Effect: the decisions you make along the way really DO matter in the end.
For you good sir:

Good riddance. As someone who was never directly influenced by GAME part of me has wanted them to go under since the Space Marine fiasco.

A Space Marine fiasco that has never proven to have been caused by GAME. :p

I've never understood this argument. I'm not saying GAME is cheap but Steam is almost always more expensive for both new and old games. Apart from sales that is which doesn't really count.

Anyway I hope this means independent stores stand more of a chance, and new more competitive chains opens up.. that's really the only good thing i can see coming from this closure.
You know what's keeping Steam prices high? Retailer like GAME which for one don't give a FUCK about PC gamers but still refuse to shelf any title if you can get a better deal online. Yup, I'm gonna shed a tear for this retailer chain for all the good it did. Overpriced games outside of sales on DD platforms, Space Marine not released on steamstore in UK, bullying people into buying used games instead of new...
I'm sorry but i don't understand what you're trying to say :S

Thoughts? Looks like Gamestation is getting thrown under the bus.

It shall be a sad day for people who like to buy games IRL.

Seriously, this is kinda sad. I have a GAME reward card. I'm not much older than it is. That's how long GAME and gamestation have been a part of my life.

This leaves us with HMV, blockbuster and supermarkets for new games.

F***. Guess it's finally time I move with the times and get me some online shopping accounts...
Most of the young scrubs seem to have never depended on old fashioned retailers. They had steam, so it is harder for them to appreciate how convenient game stores were at the time. It always did right by me, and I'll miss it if it closes.

GAME is pretty bad anyway, over priced garbage. As long as Steam and Amazon stay afloat, I'll be happy.
So I guess the impending loss of thousands of jobs, as well as the only major gaming presence on the high street, is nothing to get upset about.

I really don't get this "Me and mine" attitude games seem to show. Steam and Amazon are great, but that doesn't mean everything else should go hang.

If it does close, my thoughts go out to all the staff. Hope they manage to find jobs elsewhere, because lord knows the dole queue isn't anywhere you want to be right now.
Yep, pretty much this. Looks like we'll be losing Gamestation whatever happens, so that's one store closed in my town. Worst case scenario, we'll lose both. Even without getting onto the subject of why it's good and even necessary for gaming to have specialist retailers on the high street, losing stores and gaining unemployed people isn't what you want when the dole queue is seemingly endless and there's no work available.

That's fucking stupid. If it was me I'd scrap the GAME brand and just stick to Gamestation.

True, but GAME seems to attract clueless relatives (e.g. grand parents) who buy crap without realising what its actually worth rather than "real" gamers who are more likely to realise stuff is probably cheaper online.

I guess so, but I'm just speaking from personal experience here. Everyone I know who plays games buys from Gamestation; I don't know anyone who buys from GAME. The Gamestation in my town is bigger than the GAME and usually seems busier.

EDIT: When I say 'buys from Gamestation' I don't mean exclusively. It's just people I know buy from Gamestation or CEX if they're buying from a 'brick and mortar' store.

You're absolutely right, I'm a proper **** for giving a shit about all those people. God I'm glad there is always someone there to tell me how very wrong I always am.

Crap, :( I worked at GAME for 4 1/2 years and it'll be a sad day if it does shut on Monday. Thank god I jumped ship and now have a new job, but I'll be gutted for my colleagues if this does happen.

The HMV in my town has shut, too. Guess I'm going to supermarkets or Amazon for future purchases.

eh, in my (small) hometown there are 3 good to large sized GAME shops within literally 2 minutes walk of each other. I've always thought that was ridiculous, maybe they could close one or two

GAME's always been way too expensive for me. I won't care as much as I would about other retailers closing, but it's still sad to hear.

There's been a Game store near me for the last 13 or 14 years. I've had a reward card from there since day one. Many years ago they downsized the store (they cut it in half and stuck a wall in) but since then they've actually taken on more staff.

Speaking as someone from Ireland, I don't always find that the prices online are amazingly cheaper, if even at all, at least not on new games. EG: The new SSX on xbox, EUR 47,86 from amazon, 53e from play.com and 54.99 from cdwow. It's probably 50e in the store basing this on other titles I've seen recently and a pound to euro conversion and I can have it tomorrow instead of in a few days. I've never bought a brand new game off Steam, it's usually more expensive than buying it in store. Buying WoW time cards in the store is actually cheaper than a monthly sub, it also gave me reward card points.

Game has lost a lot of it's charm over the years. Somewhere between the xbox/ps2 and 360/ps3 generation, they really lost track of themselves.

I'll be going in this weekend to use up whatever points I have left over on something, maybe SSX.
