Lets take Frontier: Elite 2 for example, not only did you have to read that simply because otherwise you'll get arrested in game for failing the copy protection tests, but you had to read it to figure out why it's a bad thing to just blindly fly off when docked, why you should never jettison cargo in front of the police, and why you've suddenly ended up about 500 light years away from your intended destination after a 10 light year hyperspace jump.
Also, Quest for Glory. Where you had to read in order to realise that the thief knows the "Thief Sign" (place your thumb on your nose with the hand held perpendicular to the face and the fingers outspread; wiggle your fingers while focusing your eyes on your thumb and patting your belly with the other hand)
