Any game that has been liked by someone on the internet as that would inevitably lead to someone hating on it, which in turn would lead to someone defending it, which would... "FLAMEWAR!!!!"

The internet is simultaneously one of the best things and worst things to happen to civilisation and I think the game industry is worse for it and possibly society in general as well.

Now let's all marvel at the irony of this statement.

Though I still play
This - I've never found a bigger hive of retardation than in LoL but it is still fun as hell

WoW really has as well, it seems if you play during weekdays all you get is the retards how go "gawd your dps is shit uninstall the game naows plx"... then they die because they stand in a boss' area of effect spell which has "BOSS IS CASTING X SPELL, MOVE" on the screen... then blame the healer. Also seems the game has shifted to speed > over social interaction too
Pretty much all of those MOBA games have a horrible, horrible player base. DoTA, HoN, LoL--all full of dickheads.

"You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy." Clearly Obi-Wan never played LoL.

Halo: Reach. Game is great, possibly one of the best Halo games to date (second maybe to ODST), but by god the multiplayer scene is shite. There's always some ragey dickhead who thinks he's god's gift to gaming, some spawncaming fucktard(s)or someone exploiting a map glitch somewhere.

Gah.

Portal fans. They really made the game less enjoyable when you couldn't avoid trilions of jokes directly take from the game on the internet. Slightly brought down the humor in an otherwise enjoyable experiance.

Otherwise I can't really say I know where fans ruined the game. People mention a lot of multiplayer games here where the player base is rude. But lets be honest, do we really wanna count the rude people as "fans" of those games? Personally in my experiance with Halo it's the really die hard fans that can contribute to a good multiplayer game. Those who have played every halo game since the first one and enjoy the gameplay tremendusly. For me, those people are very laid back and calm when playing multiplayer, cause they have done it for years and know they don't really need to prove anything.

A lot of the dickheads online really doesen't give a damn about the game, they could be playing halo or call of duty or whatever. Way to often when I stumble upon them on Halo I can notice that they haven't touched the singelplayer or other aspects of the game.

Same thing with Warcraft, I played a roleplaying server and the times when I RP with people there it was with people that was big fans of warcraft as a whole. That knew waaaay too much about the lore than should be healthy, and read every quest discription fully. These people were a lot nicer to hang with than the average.

Of course there are excemptions. But I would say that the average "fans" of a game knows how to behave kindly in that game better than anyone else.

Tf2, oh lord does the community for team fortress suck ._.
Which one? there are many communities based around TF2.

Anyway, I can't really say a games really been ruined by its fans...Though fans of certain games can be fucking annoying. Here's my list.

LoL, HoN, DoTA, etc
Psychonauts
World of Warcraft
Any of Biowares Games
There are more but I can't think of any at this moment in time.

I see people say COD a lot. No, no, no. COD fans are fine when compared to Battlefield fans. Battlefield fans are just beyond insufferable. They have this high and mighty, holier-than-thou attitude about their samey, generic first person shooter just because it isn't the samey, generic first person shooter.

Oh, and Bioware fans. But they're just really creepy and awkward... not really insufferable or aggravating like BF fans.

Never been able to actually finish a Left 4 Dead campaign online, there's always that one guy who will votekick you if you even slightly mess up.
HoN/LoL/Dota are pretty bad as well, even though I still play LoL

For me it's gotta be Battlefield. You can't watch some gameplay without someone shrieking "CALL OF DUTY IS FOR FAGGOTS!!! ARRRRGGGHHHHH I HAVE NO SOCIAL LIFE!!!!"

League of Legends, for me. I like the game (though I'm much more of a DOTA / HoN fan), and I can't play even one game without encountering tremendous rage and flaming.

The playerbase ruined WoW for me. Antisocial jerks wherever you went.
Even though WoW had gotten incredibly boring after five years, this is why I ended up quitting.

Well, I don't exactly believe in something being ruined by something completely different being terrible. The most incoherent sentence of the day? You bet.

Anyway, I can tell you that some of the fans of the original Portal are just terrible. It's a great game, and it's extremely funny, but man have I grown tired of "Cake is a lie" by now. This has been on a downward trend fortunately enough, but there was a point where you couldn't even mention cake in any context without someone thinking they're witty by yelling "CAKE IS A LIE!"
I despise those people. Every time someone says 'the cake is a lie,' I loose any smile I have, glare at him/her, and politely tell them that they are not funny. I honestly cannot find that game all that funny mostly due to the fanbase spoiling it with overused 'jokes.' It went from a comedic puzzle game to a puzzle game that is trying to be funny. I love portal, but I hate the fanbase.

The Witcher fan base.

I played the Witcher 1, then tried playing 2.
Mentioned that I did not like much of it, and said that I gave up on it.

Got called a:
Short bus riding retard
An idiotic COD player (CoD is better than the Witcher)
A mouth breathing incompetent video gamer who is the reason modern RPGs suck.
etc.

This was not even one person, more like around 5-6 people on a forum who bashed me quite severely. On the other hand I met well one fan of the Witcher who was actually very helpful and considerate.
I did not finish the Witcher 2, not out of hate of the fans per say but because I did not like it.

Honestly they are a very immature group I found who really just seek a reason to proudly wave their Geralt flag in everyone's face. I got fed up by it very quickly.

Portal, by the time I got around to playing it every joke was tired and I'd heard it so much that it wasn't funny when I experienced it first hand. Game wasn't that great anyway.

Bioware, "OH MY GOD WE CAN HAVE SAME SEX MARRIAGE!!!"...Yes, wow, because that can only build upon Bioware's already near perfect gameplay can't it?

Call of duty fans are pretty terrible, but they don't ruin the game for me because A) they're too busy hiding in corners to even touch me and B) it's hilarious to wind them up, so if anything they improve the experience.

Fans of the "good old days" piss me off something special though, those games haven't gone anywhere, and if they were as good as you claim them to be, you'd still be playing them and not on forums whining about how Cod, Battlefield and Halo are "destroying the industry, waaaaa"

Edit: Forgot The Witcher 2 fans, the ones who cried when Yahtzee didn't like it, but especially the ones who shone their huge boners when Barack Obama was given a copy of it by another politician, BIG FUCKING WOW! He didn't ask for it, never spoke about it again and probably played it once if he ever did, since he's probably a little busy running a country. If that's your only justification for why you like the game, then you are can't like it as much as you claim to can you?

I think the modern shooter genre as a whole. I'll shamelessly play Serious Sam all day or Unreal Tournament, but the swarms of frustrated fansheep with mommy issues on Call of Duty, Battlefield, Halo, and the rest of their ilk? No thanks.

Also, AAA MMO's are notorious for having player bases made up of spore molds foul-mouthed sewer mutants. That's why I quit WoW shortly after Burning Crusade came out.

...and while I'm at it, most RTS games as well. Remember folks: using a strategy your opponent does not know how to counter means you are a cheap, lousy player and you deserve that slew of meaningless cuss words and/or death threats.
