I'm absolutely in love with the original Fallout 1 and 2. Tactics to a lesser extent. I eventually had to stop going to No Mutants Allowed simply because of the amount of hate directed to Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Marvel vs Capcom 3 for me.
"Oh, why's Megaman not in it?"
"Where's Venom?"
"Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 should be released as DLC!"
"Capcom are trying to rip us off!"
"Don't buy it! Capcom are stealing your money!"

Shut up! I don't care if it's Marvel vs Capcom 3.5! If I want to buy it, I'll buy it! And stop whining about what's not there and try to enjoy was IS there!

Though I still play
This - I've never found a bigger hive of retardation than in LoL but it is still fun as hell

WoW really has as well, it seems if you play during weekdays all you get is the retards how go "gawd your dps is shit uninstall the game naows plx"... then they die because they stand in a boss' area of effect spell which has "BOSS IS CASTING X SPELL, MOVE" on the screen... then blame the healer. Also seems the game has shifted to speed > over social interaction too
You know what? Your post reminded me of something WoW has "contributed" to the world that I would just as well they hadnt... Grammar is horrible everywhere on the internet, we all know this, but the whole "plox" thing really gets under my fingernails with feces speckled ruty nails. How in the wide world of football did it become "cool" to not hyphenate, not condense, but to completely and incorrectly RE-SPELL a word for which there was no alteration neccesary?
Seeing players type "Step up the dps plox" and then its natural de-evolution to "moar heals plx" just makes me want to blow my own head off.

A Sound Of Thunder, anyone?

Metroid other M. yea if the fanbase had just shut up and decided to like samus as she is that thing would have not came into existence. fanbase can ruin a game in its entirety, as long as the developer is just going off of the hardcore base and not going "huh would anyone like samus submitting her self to a man and making a sub par game to go along with it?"

but rant aside i don't play multiplayer simply because all i get from most other people is that i suck because i don't spend all day every day playing the same game. i have given up most shooters simply because i play too many different games to be good enough at shooters competitively. i didn't work an 8 hour day at a crappy job just to come home to listen to some 12 year olds (physically and mentally ) as they whine about how I'm not a master at what game they are playing. id like them to play devil may cry just once so their ears hurt for once.
I dont so much get the idea that the developers wanted, or heard any of the fanbase say, that they wanted to see Samus "submitting" herself to a man, but it was definitely a weird direction to take the game in. New is not always good.

Either no one was really thinking, or they deviously thought seeing previews wherein our girl Samus wrecks Mother Brain in 3D would compel gamers to give it a shot. I know thats what did it for me. Shame about, you know... the whole rest of the game.

Portal. "The Cake is a Lie" was intended to portray a previous test subject's descent into madness after realizing the truth about the aperture science facility. As a contextless response to anything and everything involving cake it doesn't have the same effect and after hearing it a few thousand times it doesn't even SOUND funny anymore.
Not to forget that the actual joke here is that during the test course that is all you get promised as a reward, wich in itself comes off as slightly surreal and highly suspicious. Not to mention that it becomes pretty obvious that you inevitably walk into a deathtrap ("You will be baked *bbzt* and then there will be Cake").

So the joke, imo at least, is that "The Cake is a lie" is a jab at all those cryptic messages seen in lots and lots of games, tv shows, movies and books. And it's funny because it's just so very obvious (and of course because in the End, the cake is just about the only thing that ISN'T a lie).

...Of course, many people did not reach further than "weird combination of words is funny" and as such, a pointless meme was born.

Halo, Call of Duty, Gears of War, Guitar Hero, and even though it's not a video game, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Final Fantasy VII... love the game, hate the yaoi-obsessive fanbase. But not to the point to where I hate the game.

It was bound to happen when square decided to put Cloud in a dress. I mean, it was going to happen anyway(with great internet comes great disturbing content...), it just happened faster and on a grander scale due to that scene.

No, never. I have a hard time understanding how a fanbase could possibly RUIN a good game.

Believe it or not, it is possible to ignore people.

WoW the player base really really makes it hard to have fun alot of the time. Even though there are good players who just play quietly and get along fine it's the assholes that stand out.

But the Kingdom Hearts fanbase does have some very trying people. Even if you like Kingdom Hearts. Even if you like Kingdom Hearts a lot. Even if you yaoi. Even if you like shotacon yaoi. Because the main unappeal of Kingdom Hearts today, is not shotacon yaoi for shotacats. It is often unbelievably loud, obnoxious, and ignorant people. Every bit as annoying as the worst of the Naruto fanbase..

Erm not to sound like an ignorant prat but what is Yaoi, Shotacon or Shotacats? Not heard these words before though the sound pretty negative. I though Shotacon was Shotokan at first :).

I too like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy series. However I tend to pay a whole lot less attention to the Kingdom Hearts fanbase and just enjoy the game. Thankfully its much easier to do than the Final Fantasy fanbase. (see below for reasons)

...what about Final Fantasy? Opinions on that fan base may vary.
Yeah Final Fantasy is a series I love but hate most of the fanbase. Mainly because quite a lot of them are pretentious pricks who must bash every other game in the series that isn't the one they like. Like FFVII? Then your just a stupid cheap playing an overrated mainstream mess... Like FFVI? Then your just stuck in your silly nostalgia playing a little nes game... The list goes on. Can't we just like Final Fantasy? Yeah you've got gripes with one of the games, have them... I'm not bothered about that but its when you start insulting the people playing them.

Its one of the most split fanbases out there. I'd like to ignore it if I can however the Final Fantasy fanbase ends up everywhere including these forums.

None i can think of apart from COD games, but mostly because they never change. Fans love the games they love, but that doesnt mean you shouldnt want change. Yeah, sometimes that change can suck but also some changes can improve the game and make it a new experience again.

i think the combined IQ of the bungie.net and COD forums is less than the average IQ shown in one escapist magazine thread, but i enjoy playing both games. without a mic. for obvious reasons. no point in doing callouts if your teammate is screaming "PENISPENISPENISF*GF*GF*G YOU SUCK LOSER GET A LIFE TRYHARD LOLN00BN00BN00B TASTE MAH JUSTIS *armerlockarmerlockarmerlock*"

DOTA/LoL/(insert MOBA variant derived from original DOTA crowd)

Holy shit does this game drive people nuts. Or stupid.
It's great in how team-centric it can be (and when you get a good team playing in harmony, it's really damn fun), but this also means its just as susceptible to pure griefing.

Today, I just do bot-games on LoL purely for yucks (and when I'm not swamped in homework).

Thinking about starting a regular topic on LoL champs (non-competitive, naturally) just to shoot the shit.

Minecraft.

"IT'S SO INNOVATIVE AND SO FUN AND EVERYTHING ABOUT IT IS PERFECT AND I CAN WATCH FOUR TRILLION LETS PLAYS IN A ROW AND STILL WHINE ON THE INTERNET FOR MORE. NOTCH IS SUCH A GENIUS FOR INVENTING HIS OWN GENRE AND I WANT HIM INSIDE OF ME OH DEAR GOD." can pretty much (with some liberally-applied hyperbole) summarise why I hate Minecraft fanboys/girls.

Seriously. I have seen so many people non-stop yapping about Minecraft (even when Minecraft is totally irrelevant to the subject) that it makes me despise them. Aside from the fact that many of them are sort of ignorant about how totally "original" and "innovative" it actually is, they also just...don't...shut...up.

There's also the huge fucking hipster demographic who play that game that can all go and die.

I used to think that game was fun. It's like if you eat a caramel chocolate bar and think it's nice, but then you realise that everyone else is always eating the same chocolate bar and eventually the smell of caramel makes you feel sick.

For me, it'd be a toss up between Warhammer and Kingdom Hearts. On one hand, the neck beard army that seems to almost exclusively make up WH40K's fanbase repulses me and quashes any enthusiasm I might've shown for the game from the get go. On the other hand, so does the blatant Weeaboo army that surrounds Kingdom Hearts. I played KH when I was 13 and genuinely liked it, but the kinds of fans it's gathered since then turned KH2 from a sought after sequel to a guilty pleasure that I hide right below my porn stash. It almost rivals Naruto's fanbase in the kinds of obnoxious fawning you'd see in its dedicated forums. And don't get me started on the tons of horrible cosplay (Protip: black face does NOT make you look like a heartless).

And then there's the Bioware fanboys...

This has probably already been said, but honestly it can't be stressed enough...

I don't think it's fans that ruin the game for people. I see genuine fans actually helping other players, working together as a team in multiplayer games, or positively promoting the games that they love. The only people that ruin games for me are those that cheat by using/exploiting mods, hacks, cracks, bugs in a game, or for lack of a better word... dickheads (you know the ones that kill their teammates all the time - and not the same as someone new, it's possible to tell the difference).

I recently played COD: WOW and was shocked when another player picked me up, moved me through walls across the map, and placed me in a room that had all exits blocked by trucks. It's shit like this that pisses me off about cheaters. It's one thing to show a few friends and maybe people in the game that you can do amazing shit like hack the online system, but to use it to exploit other players in the game to get achievements is just lazy. I quite the game and moved to another. I eventually found myself in with the same player, or someone with the same hack/crack and I left again. I'm just looking for a little kick-back time and i'm not wasting it while someone decides they want to be a jokester. That ruins a game.

I can understand the issue with people who play games like Halo too, they think they're so superior because they play 8-12 hours a day and can 'no scope' a 'newbie' that only has a few hours a month to play. Again, they're not fans because they play Halo for 8 hours a day, they're fanatics. Zealots that have no business 'tea bagging' any opponents. Again - something totally acceptable when playing with friends that you don't mind dicking around with, but complete strangers, seriously? Tea bagging strangers is only appropriate if they cheat or you're reciprocating an inappropriate tea bagging.

Fans respect the games they play and the players they play with. Fans don't go out of their way to ruin games, they go out of their way to make the game better. It's the fanatics you need to look out for. They ruin the game.

the elitism that oozes from this crap is sickening. unless you know people who play, stay away from online and offline? youre gonna need help. "youre not good at this game at all unless youve played the first one. youre too stupid to know how to play" youd think itd be just one or two people right? its at least 75% of the community, the other 25%? theyre constantly harassed for not getting past a certain hunt, not being at a certain rank or using a weapon type that the "elites" dont use

ill stick with god eater, its the same thing but with a much friendlier community. MUCH friendlier
