Metal Gear Rising's soundtrack was basically a battlefield of guitars. It also showed how god damn effective gradually stacking lyrics can be in making a boss battle so much more amazing.

Theoretically, someone could cheat here and say "GTA".

But I'm not going to do that.

I'm going to say, Assassin's Creed. The music is probably the best thing about the series.

Agree, I love all the soundtracks, the music just works so well with the different games and there settings. You've covered
1 and 2 so here's two of my favourites from:

Oh and just to add something new,

I think (J)RPGs generally have good music, mainly some slow melodic stuff while travelling / in cities while in battles stuff that will get you more pumped up.
I think Xenoblade and Tales of Symphonia both have great music in their games.

And the Zelda games are of course masterpieces when it comes to this genre as well as gameplay :D

Second that. This series is really pretty good with music, even though I find other parts pretty "meh".

Also, the music in Legend of Grimrock is pretty awesome

And reciever is having some pretty great tune too.

There are others, probably, and most that I wanted to mention were mentioned already, so yeah.

Halo.
All except Halo 4, Halo 4 was abysmal, just a god awful score.
Well that's score

As far as themes go Tales of (blank) has some great Jrock themes, and not bad battle scores either

Well, since Megaman wins by default

I guess I have to go with God of War

I have to throw in Mass Effect. All three games have amazing music, from the synth music of 1 to the grandiose and emotional pieces from 3.

Got to go with the early Sonic games just based off the Mystic Cave Zone alone.

Honourable mention for the original Deus Ex's and Human Revolution's music.

The worst has music has got to be, the later Sonic games. Escape from the City made my ears bleed, but the main theme from Sonic Heroes tested my sanity to the very limit.

Zelda

But I say that as a huge Zelda fanboy. Some subjective contamination may have occured.
I actually went to that live Zelda concert last year. I'll second this, its pretty amazing when played with an actual orchestra.

Mmm id say it would be a draw between Command and Conquer series and Castlevania for my tastes.

Actually nay, castlevania wins it, i dont know what the genre of music is (gothic music?), but its a genre of music i dont hear at all outside the games themselves. Though granted im an ignoramus when it comes to music in general.

As growing up as a gamer, I have heard tons of music out of games. The most memorable tho came from the final fantasy series, and I have to say even the modern final fantasy games hold up when it comes to the music.

I'd say EVE Online has some of the best music scores and ambient soundtracks that you could ask for!

I'm throwing my bet in with Tropico.
Yeah, you get the huge orchestral scores in a lot of games. Not that those are bad... but Tropico has a very special place in video game music!

the Donkey Kong Country Trilogy on Super NES. I even actually own the physical CD's! No other game series has made me love video game music since. The Final Fantasy games have their moments but I could listen to DKC all damn day. Mainly DKC2 its just awesome!

Some of the coolest moments in games, I find, is when they use actual songs in the game. Like the airport level near the end of Max Payne 3 was amazing because of the song in the background.

The Langrisser Series and the Dodonpachi series, Dodonpachi has the most variation in music styles between each game I've seen anywhere from keyboard pop to guitar solo rock, to metal electronica to hybrid disco / dubstep.

here are a couple of tracks, I recommend listening to Warsong, Langrisser 2, Langrisser 5/V. and all the Dodonpachis especially Diafukatsu normal and black Label.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2FDGa11A3c&list=PLCB8C247FA225DC8C&index=74 With my playlist with some of that music on it.

More ppl should know the names of Noriyuki Iwadare http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noriyuki_Iwadare

and Manabu Namiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manabu_Namiki

Langrisser series OST playlist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeLPaQ90NFs&list=PLA4C6F823101AE20A

Anyway ppl rant on about us in the west not getting all of Sega's Shining games but the fact we only got the first Langrisser not the rest is even more criminal imo, especally when you consider Advanced Wars was such a big hit over here (AW is a clone of Langrisser gameplay wise). Unfortunatly Langrisser is largly unknown in the west mostly because Langrisser 1 was localised as Warsong, much more ppl knof of it's spirtual sequel Growlancer.
