How else am I supposed to judge my self worth as a human being?
there has to be better ways of measuring your self worth than by using a largley arbitary points system

They're just points. A way to measure how "good" you are at games. It's like the High-Score system in Pac-Man. The guys that take it seriously are probably the same guys who used to play Pac-Man for days on end, so they could enter "ASS" as the top High-Score name.

Well, for the most part I just consider them the challenges of the games, mostly to be taken or left. I rarely get all the points in a game (currently only 8 out of over 50 games.... and I barely count Avatar, The Burning Earth since I rented the game to see if it really is as easy as so many say it is... and now I think it's kind of joke to have it but I can't send them back.)

Also it can make for interesting challenges you can make for yourself, as for right now I'm on a mission to have an average of over 50% of my overall possible gamerscore before I put another game into it. This is tricky as for starters I rarely play online games so with many games I can't even try for many of the points, then there's the games that will add achievements that can only be gotten if you buy the DL content that I don't want (like Halo 3's 1750 possible points and I think at best I can get 1250) I'm still 1500 points from completing this and find it's been a great way to get me back to games I haven't played in a while and making up for my total lack of skill on Guitar Hero/Rock Band is a bit of a pain.

As much as I don't go about talking about it much, hell, this is the first time I've talked about the subject online. In the end, take it as you wish, just those that take it seriously, remember, you might be the only one.

Sometimes people feel the need to validate their existence with things like that. I never really cared to be honest (unless they unlock something in game)

I like gamerscore, but I'm not a total whore about it. I usually go for achievements within my grasp. I love The Orange Box Achievements for Half-Life 2 and its episodes though. My proudest achievement is still going through Episode 1 to get The One Free Bullet. :D

Yes :\ EVERYONE LETS STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR ONLINE MATCH SO I CAN GET MY ACHIVEMENT and then it just devolves into everyone fucking around so they can get stupid achievements.
This is why I hate online achievements, they detract too much from the gameplay and force you to play a certain way or accomplish some specific task that you can easily screw up on again and again.

Because pressing start and completing basic plot points are measures as to how good you are at a game.
Note the quotation marks around good. I never said it was a system that worked as intended.

And anyway, I think finishing a game is an achievement in itself. Not really deserving of a huge amount of praise, but it's still an accomplishment.

I like it. Give me extra motivation to play through games, giving me more time to give the game a chance. It was the only reason I went back to Assassin's Creed and ended up enjoying it.

I use it to boost my ego. Although this never works as I have a friend who's gamerscore is double mine.

what I don't like is achievements for doing next to nothing, I think there's a TMNT game that gives you points for entering the Konami Code at the start screen. The game doesn't even have anything to do with Konami
Which TMNT game is this? I only know of one retail one and then the Xbox Live Arcade releases.

ahh sorry, my mistake, it was Viva Pinata Party Animals. I don't know how I got the two mixed up :S

It'd be nice if it did something. But it doesnt. It took YEARS before they added rewards, and even then they are so rare.

But I do find I play games more thoroughly to hunt achievements and in the end, enjoy myself a lil more and get more out of the purchase.

I personally don't care. Gamerscore helped to enrich the life of a game for me. I never saw myself playing Lego Indiana Jones, but here I am, and I'm enjoying every part of it and unlocking the achievements. It's meant to be a second part of the game on top of the overall 100 percent of the game itself, and that's fine.

It's a good thing.... gives games added replayability and provides a challenge, if done well. If not done well, I likely won't be trying for them. As another poster mentioned above, I like to see just how complete a game is... it's a good measuring stick for how much value I've gotten from a title.

Sometimes it's also proof that you were able to do something others could not.... like headshotting a hunter mid-jump... with a pistol...

I wouldn't say most people care, but I did find that when I switch to different systems that don't have some sort of achievement system, it always feels like I am not playing the game as well. On a somewhat related note, I did recently break 9000 points so I was cracking jokes about it. I don't really care how big it gets, now that I've broken that huge milestone.

Unless I know them in real life, I don't add anyone with a gamerscore under 10000 to my friends list. I am indeed biased.

I dunno, it is somewhat of an indication of how much people play games, or how many games they play. I don't mind it, I like getting achievements and gamerscore, but I won't go far out of my way to get them. I don't really see why one would dislike it.
