The last 3 games I bought on hype were Skyrim, Witcher 2 and Deus Ex HR. But that wasn't publicly generated hype, it was due to me being a fan of those series. So self generated hype.

The only one I'm disappointed with is Witcher 2, because I can't get it to work.

I never buy something based on publicly generated hype. Never. I HAVE bought some games on a whim, but it's usually "Hmm, that box art looks kinda cool... ?15? Why not". They are the ones that disappoint me the most.

Beat Hazard and Polynomial. Beat Hazard just looked so fun, and it ended up just being kinda...meh. The Polynomial is pretty cool in terms of visuals, but I just don't have any idea what I'm supposed to do.

Guess I'm just a sucker for music-interpreter games.

Marvel vs Capcom 3 in recent memory...great gameplay but bare-bones content. What was a bigger slap in the face was that 9 months later they release a better version that should have came out the first time.
which was again pretty bare-bones.

another game that didn't fool me, but did fool some friends of my (even though i warned them) was SFxTK. man one of them was Pissed! came to me saying i was right and how capcom is evil and stuff.

The Force Unleashed 2. Yeah, that game. 60dollars for 6 hours of bad storyline and boring gameplay. I'm having a derection right now because you made me think of it.
How in the world did you manage to stretch it out that long?

Anyway, for me it would have to have been Fracture. The trailers made it look fun, the tutorial was enjoyable to play, the weapons and story were rather creative. I thought it was going to be a fun time when I got it. Then about 5 hours later I was rather disappointed with what it had turned into.

Ah yes. I have a history with this. Now I do my research.

The worst case was in my highschool years in the PS1 era where I bought the Men in black game on impulse because I saw a review of it which made it look good. It sucked hairy old man testicles.

A few years ago I bought Shadow of the colossus because what the back of the cover said about the game. I got the impression that I could explore the whole region & look for the colossi. Instead, you had to kill them in sequencial order & your sword led you to their location. The game itself wasn't bad, just linear. And I wanted the pleasure of searching for them myself in any order.

I think the most recent was Mirrors edge. Again, it wasn't that bad a game just limiting & the controls are awkward.

Oh hell yes! New Metroid game! This is going to be aweso... oh. Oh, Gods.
This one right here. The first truly abysmal entry in the once-proud Metroid series, ruining the most prominent and powerful female character in gaming. And now there's been absolutely no word on anything Metroid since, so I guess it also spells the end of Metroid altogether.

Dead Island doesn't really count for me because it's a non-gameplay trailer that generated all the hype. Once you saw the gameplay you instantly knew it wasn't worth it.

Witcher 2 I just can't get into, not the story, love the story. But the combat mechanics are so clunky for my liking that they kill the flow of the game.

NBA 2K12, after having such a good time with 2K11...got to love companies that backtrack on their games. Which brings us to nothing else other than:

Diablo 3, anyone who has bought it and has reached inferno difficulty should know what I'm talking about.

There must be a few more than I've forgot, FO3:NV comes to mind, but the feeling there was lost mostly due to the crashes and not the actual game,so I don't think it counts fully.

Pretty much every MMO that has come out in the last 5 years. The only one I think I have played past the free 30 days was Swtor, and I have since stopped playing it.

I rented Shadowrun once, expecting a cool story mode about how magic was possible in a modern day society and how it would effect the world around them.
Got an exposition dump about how a volcano erupted and then a multiplayer mode where bots couldn't be activated if there was another player playing with you.
Learned later that the shitty game was actually made off of an old top-down roleplaying game that was supposedly much better. Made me rage.

Lol, yeah, my missus bought that for me, once. It's the only game in my collection that has dust gathering on it. I normally like any shooter, but that was.....
Fucking.
Shit.

She asks me which upcoming titles I might be interested in now, thank God.
The cross-platform X-box/PC idea was a good one too. WRONG game to try it with though. Ugh.

(pardon my French)

I too was stung by Brutal Legend. I thought it would be an awesome hack and slash action game set to the best soundtrack in any game ever with scenery to match, with even a little driving and car customisation thrown in. I'm even a moderate fan of Jack Black. It should have been the perfect game for me. But oh how I was wrong.

The demo gave the impression of the game I was expecting it to be, but once you got past that stage in the actual game things pretty much go to shit. Turned in to a crappy repetitive game full of shallow unenjoyable mechanics sprinkled over a shitty RTS game. I really don't like RTS games. I don't necessarily have anything against them but I felt so cheated thinking that I was lied to about the entire genre of the game! If I knew that's what the game was about then it would be fine, I simply wouldn't have bought it. But they lied. Which ended up in me wasting £40. At least the soundtrack was still good.
Personally I enjoyed Brutal Legend, the RTS sections were a surprise and I had a lot of fun with the multiplayer when I could actually get a game, but I can see why people were annoyed about it, the demo did nothing to demonstrate that the RTS elements were going to be there, and totally threw the impression of what the game was about.

If Double Fine had just shown that it was going to be that, people would've gone in knowing what to expect and not felt burned or mis-lead.

Did you try Witcher 2 once they bought out the patch? I played it a couple of months ago after they added all the new features/tided up the game, and I didn't feel it was too bad, some elements are a little clunky, but apparently it's a massive step up from what it was like at release. They pretty much overhauled the fighting mechanics.

Watching the trailer still makes me want the game that was hyped, a true emotional zombie survival game, but then I remember the mess I spent $60 on :(

If I finished a full price game in 4hrs I would take it back for a refund.

GTA3 fooled me because of my own ignorance, when I played GTA I just though damn this would be awesome in 3D so when it came out I was so hyped for it got back played it and huge disappointment ensued I think they forgot to put in the fun although judging by the reviews I think it was just left out of my version.
Thats strange, GTA3 was every bit as cool as I expected it to be. I even bought a new graphics card to play it. I remember a few years earlier I imagined how cool it would be if GTA was 3D, but that would never happen because a 3D open world just wouldn't be possible...

For me DA2 is the obvious candidate but thats a boring subject.

Pretty much everything labelled X-Com that has been released after Terror From the Deep. Every game that had a Master of Magic vibe to it, Age of Wonders and Warlock I'm looking sternly at you!

But besides DA2 I think the biggest disappointment has to be Bioshock. I loved System Shock 2, and after hearing so much praise about Bioshock I had to try it. I still can't figure out what all the fuss was about. It's just a normal mediocre shooter with linear levels and some admittedly very interesting aesthetics.

GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, biggest mistake I've ever made.
Skyrim is another, I did pour a lot of time into it but I can't say I had fun.
