Ooo. Links in to a discussion I had earlier. Final Fantasy XIII got a lot of undeserved flak, but I guess I can understand why, I wasn't exposed to Fable 1's hype so I loved that, I have no idea why Black & White 2 is so unpopular, I really loved that, Brink isn't as bad as people make it out to be, it can be quite enjoyable, and my mind's blank so I can't think of any others at the moment.

Captcha: "Oh, lord". Touché.

Edit: I'll go with Silent Hill 4 too, although it was never really 'hated', just not liked much. It's true that it doesn't feel like Silent Hill, but good god is that game brilliant. And easily the scariest in the franchise.

American McGee's Alice and the sequel Alice: Madness Returns.

Yes American McGee's Alice wasn't all that great, the base of it, Wonderland being messed up, had been done plenty of times and Wonderland was already a pretty messed up place. The platforming was like they were made of Ice and Marbles. But there was a enough weapons, enemies, and story to make it interesting.

While Madness Returns was short, in some aspects, had more puzzles and collectibles then action and not much of a storyline, it looked grand graphically and there was enough in it to make it work for me.

But nowadays I hear people hate them both, and I don't mean hate as a term of thinking they don't like what I like I mean HATE it, and I can partially see why. But they worked for me. Plus many of them just dismissed it as bad because it was an "EA title"

I'm sure it isn't completely hated but I live around quite a few people that hate the two titles.

CAPTCHA: Technicolor Yawn... now that does sound very Wonderland-esque.

Mobile Suit Gundam CrossFire is, actually, a fuckton better than everyone has heard. I'd actually argue that the Newtype Magazine's rating of it, which was highly positive, was quite accurate.

Although the western press shitting on it did mean I got it nice and cheap, so there's that.

I have a fondness for the way of the samurai series that befuddles many. There's a new one coming this year, and they've actually updated the graphics! Still not spectacular looking, but definitely better than PS2 circa 2002.

Bioshock 2. One of my favourite games... and I didn't think the first one was all that good. So shoot me :p

While I had alot of problems with DA 2 I actually quite liked it, enough to play it several times.

Even more shocking, I actually REALLY like the plot of that game. Of all its faults, I have never thought the plot was one of them.

I was actually thinking of making a thread like this, myself. But, since you've already gone and done that for everyone, there is one game I've been meaning to bring up.

Zapper: One Wicked Cricket.

It came from Blitz Games and Infogrames back in 2002. The reason a lot of people seem to really hate it is because they somehow think it's a Frogger ripoff. It's nothing of the sort! You hop around tile-based maps and collect... stuff. That's about it. It was certainly inspired by Frogger, and it's sort of the spiritual successor to Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge, which was developed by a lot of the same people as Zapper. But, even that game was rather a far cry from the traditional Frogger formula.

Frogger has broad, open maps. Zapper has more "Get from here to there" maps. It's like Serious Sam vs. Doom. However, Zapper also has puzzles in it, crates to smash, a lot more things to collect and the character himself can actually kill stuff, which is something Frogger just can't do. Or Chip, the star of Chip's Challenge, which I think is a lot more like Zapper than Frogger would ever be.

A lot of people also hate it for being short. Portal was short, too. And it was almost exactly the same as Narbacular Drop. Yet, people praise it for being "original", and hate on Zapper, when it's hardly anything like Frogger to begin with. On the surface, one might remind you of the other, but the similarities you come to assume start to disappear when you actually play the game. Comparing Zapper and Frogger is essentially like comparing inFAMOUS and [Prototype]. They're both sandbox games that give you superpowers to play with. But, when you actually do, you realize these games have almost nothing else in common.

If one game is inspired by another, is it really that bad if it's more advanced, puzzling, challenging and just overall better?
Plus, the soundtrack is just all kinds of awesome.

Woah, Chip's Challenge. I haven't heard about or seen that game since Windows 95 was still prevalent.

OT: uhhh, I actually liked Hyperdimensional Neptunia. I know it's awful, I just don't care. Oh, and I don't know if this counts, but I actually enjoyed the cutscenes in MGS4.

Brutal Legend. Yeah, the RTS parts were pretty shallow, but come on man... Tim Schafer and Jack Black create a heavy metal-themed world for you to save? With surprisingly good voice acting from Rob Halford, Lita Ford, and Ozzy Osbourne? Awesome.

Ozzy is in that game? I might look into it now.

I'll do you one better. I loved Fallout Tactics. Sure, it didn't get the setting quite (or even close to) right, but it is a solid strategy game that is as fun as it is challenging and it uses the SPECIAL system.

Also, I preferred New Vegas too, but Fallout 3 was still great, with the exception of Little Lamplight.
People liked Tactics, its a fan favorite on the Fallout forums.

It was Fallout: BoS that sucked.
Cool. I've always heard it get hate.
Many Fallout fans hated Tactics when it came out because we where patiently waiting for Fallout 3 and this was not Fallout 3. Many people also saw this as proof that the end of Interplay and Black Isle was near, Titus had acquired Interplay and was changing their focus from deep cRPGs to action oriented console games, Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky and Jason D. Anderson had left to found Troika, Brian Fargo was having disputes with the new management and would soon leave, and because we never go a completed Fallout 3 Tactics was seen as what Titus gave us instead.
But is you look at the game for what it is and not a replacement for Fallout 3 it is a fairly good game and people have come to realize that.

Going a bit further back in time I would say Dues Ex: Invisible War! That's right I like it! Yes you got thrown into the conspiracy pretty much straight away & some design aspects were annoying but overall it was still a fun game & still better that alot of other fps games at the time (and still alot better than the ones released this generation).

Also Goldeneye: Rogue Agent! I thought the controls were tight & responsive, with challenging gameplay & a fairly decent story!

For a game this generation? I would say Bioshock 2! I really enjoyed it! I liked the story, atmosphere & the multiplayer is quite fun & im still playing it since it came out!

Only ones that come to mind are Deus Ex: Invisible War (didn't live up to the first one, but consolization didn't bring it down that far) and Alice: Madness Returns (I'd include the first game, but I haven't come across much hate for American McGee's Alice).

as for a couple of games brought up in the OP...

Shadowrun (2007) - Another really interesting game where it was fantasy, combined with the future. Humans, Dwarves, Elves and Trolls fight each other in a futuristic, FPS, Magic-y thing.... It was interesting and different, and I dont see why it deserved the hate it got.

Dragon Age II - To me the only bad things I can think about this game is the fact that you never really leave Kirkwall, and when you do, its for about 30 mins, and the fact that you cannot change the armour of your allies (Which is becoming a theme in Biowares more recent games) the combat is better, the animations are WAY better, the way you interact with characters/people is better. I suppose its like Marmite, you either love it or hate it.
both of those games fall under "not terrible on their own merit, but really badly handled intellectual property". The Shadowrun IP is an old one (1st edition tabletop came out in 1989), with a rabidly protective fanbase. I've been on the fringe of said fanbase for a good 15 years. I haven't played the Shadowrun FPS, but I'm a console FPS hater, so I'd most likely hate it as a game as well as mirroring the vitriol I've seen spewed at it for lore issues.
DAII... well, those of us who played the ol' Baldur's Gate series back when it was new expected a lot out of its "spiritual successor" series. Unfortunately, we got some massively simplified D20 in DAO and an action game in DAII (though that wasn't nearly as big a betrayal as Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance).
But if you like 'em, good on ya. Different strokes for different folks.

Dominions 3. Everyone I introduce it to don't like how it plays or how complex it is. Or it's graphics. Doesn't stop me from loving it, though.

Yup, Ozzy voiced the God of Metal. It looked exactly like him, too. :)
