does anyone know any games were magic was actually fun, or at least used properly?

edit: to clarify, i found oblivions magic system rubish! the spells went to slow and i never felt that they were killing things, a good magic system (by my standards) would be one that has a good amount of spells being different from , fireballs, sleeping spells, summon spells, and taming spells.

Neverwinter Nights does magic pretty well. I'm taking magic being "fun" in that it actually works and has a use in the game.

A good spellcaster in NWN is nearly unstoppable.

Baldur's Gate 2. Loved starting new games and using cheats to make an insanely awesome sorcerer. I used to play around with the enemies after that. Like turning them to stone, paralyzing them and so on and so forth, after which I would dispose of them at my leisure. It rocks!

Oblivion's magic is barrels of fun if you're powerful, a high level illusionist in that game is like a cat playing with mice, they're just toying with their victims.

Thank you for that, I didn't understand the damn question until I saw your lovely post.
I like how Guild Wars (and probably other MMOs) have you recharge your mana/energy super quick so that your magic reserves are just for that battle you don't have to worry about your magic over a long period of time thus enabling each fight to make you use your all and not just two hits a dead.

I really liked magic in Black & White.

Well, i like magic in most games, but some of it was brilliant in Black & White, i've never tried another game where aiming fireballs was that awesome

Its always fun. Shit, it was even fun in Two Worlds.

But Morrowind had the best magic.

I liked the magic in Lostmagic only problem is you have to play the game to use it. It's an okay game but as an RTS it's pretty archaic(that might be the right word).

Could you clarify/extend this a bit? Like give examples of magic systems that you do not enjoy and/or think are poorly implemented? Do you think that this is generally the case?

I generally enjoy magic systems. I really liked the system of Age of Wonders II and its spin off, due to the research aspect (I ♥ research systems), I find global enchantments like Domain of Darkness and Damnation to be interesting, and I liked how each sphere had it's own identity and binary opposition.

I avidly enjoy Magic: The Gathering, as you can tell by my avatar.

I liked the magic system in Dungeons of the Unforgiven (cookie if you know of it. Staple of my childhood, but so obscure and for good reason), due to the whole cast-what-you-find system for most classes and the wildly differing purposes of the spells (ranging from automatic kills to restoring your youth).

I didn't really like the spell system in Morrowind, just because I had to pay copious amounts of mana for something that was likely to fail. Of course, I never invested that much effort into magic or focused on keeping my fatigue up. I did like the selection of spells though.

I found the magic system in Dungeon Siege to lack diversity and identity, and higher level spells made the lower level spells absolutely obsolete, which is a big no no for me.

EDIT: Tore down the wall a bit.

Fable 2? Assign area of effect spell to all levels, hold down magic button, release, repeat.

Thrilling.
NO don't remind me of that I needed counseling and a cup of drano to forget about that.
