Games you consider overrated

Shadow of the Colossus: Sure, it was good, very artsy, boss battles were usually intense, and it was pretty fun. I do not however believe that it is the single greatest game on the PS2 as so many review sites claim it be. Certainly not bad, but definitely not God's gift to Playstation users.

Dark Souls: I realize the main selling point of this game was it's difficulty, but a game can't stand on difficulty alone. The controls weren't exactly spectacular, the visuals weren't anything special, and the story? I don't recall it having one, maybe because I never played Demon's Souls, or maybe I stopped playing too soon. Regardless, it was a bland tale that really gave me no incentive to deal with the difficulty for longer than 8 hours.

Prince of Persia (2008): I realize most people didn't like it, but critics loved it! It was good I suppose, but not as great as critics would lead you to believe. It didn't help that PoP is already one of my favorite franchises, so it definitely had a lot to live up to in my eyes.

That's it for me, I kind of operate on a limited budget so I usually submit potential game purchases to rigorous vetting. I only buy games that I am almost positive that I will love.

Halo. I enjoyed the first, had some fun with ODST.

They're enjoyable, but not sure why they're so well regarded in their fandom.
I agree with the story mode, it is merely ok. But 4 player smooth co op is a big thing.
Oh and the multiplayer definitely deserves all the praise it gets :)
Don't see why. It's like everything else.

Want perfect multiplayer? Go play Starcraft.
starcraft perfect mp,i mean yes if you are a mentally challenged kid who can't think straight for 10 sec,it's a perfect example for a no brainer mp game !!!

Skyrim.

It feels like Oblivion with a few rough edges smoothed out, a shitty(er) UI and new content. I'm having fun playing it but the praise this game got was way too high for what the game actually is.

Hell, no game would be deserving of that much praise.

At it's worst it was

OP: "Topic in no way to do with skyrim"
Some people "hurr durr arrow to the knee, isn't skyrim great?"

Commence circle jerking.
I concur.

The Witcher games. I honestly have no idea what's so fun about them, and I will never ever play one again. Also Call of Duty, but that isn't really overrated by everyone, just poorly reviewed.

I suspect you haven't actually played the starcraft multiplayer, or not for very long. There is a reason Korean kids spend days upon days training, because this multiplayer is WAY deeper than you make it out to be.

In short, really any game thats overhyped. The moment i see the Ads, the Commercials and basicly everyone already circle-jerking on how awesome its going to be. Basicly, anyone recall that Vid on Youtube where the guy ends up with a boner after watching the first Skyrim Trailer? Thats basicly the image i have in my Head everytime the Fanboys get going.

And at that point i already know the game will probably suck, and by suck i mean not ever live up to the expectations or lofty ideals People have in their Heads. It actually gives me a perverse Pleasure seeing the dreams of fanboys being crushed.

GTA4? Hyped. Did it deliver on it? "Hey Cousin, i called you 30 Minutes ago but i want to see big american boobies again, wanna go? No? Okay i call in 30 Minutes again."

Dragon Age 2? Hyped? Yup. Did it deliver? Quite frankly, no it didnt. It had absolutely nothing to do with Origins except that your Family escapes from Lothering, you dont even meet the Warden or anyone at the beginning, Sten? Morrigan? You never see them again. Only Lelianna and thats a DLC even. Well Alistair maybe depending on Choice. Every Act is self-contained and has no real Structure or Plot really, there is no consequence. And the Ending shits on you anyway, the moment anything interesting happens is also the moment the game ends.

Bioshock? Im going to paraphrase Yahtzee here. "Its not the second coming."

In short, the moment you buy into the hype, be prepared to be disappointed because the Game will never be as good as you think it will be. Saints Row 3 is the perfect example. SR2? Awesome, so of course the Sequel can only be better, right? Wrong.

293 Posts full of the terminally unsatisfiable that cannot be entertained by an entertainment industry.

One should consider that if nothing meet's one's expectations, perhaps you expect too much.

Or perhaps in other words, when you're too hip to be entertained by development projects that took large groups of people that are probably smarter than any one you personally know and cost more money to produce than you'll likely ever see in a life time, perhaps you're so hip that you're no longer hip.

Its quite bourgeoisie when you consider it, how completely inconsolable and unimpressed our society can show itself to be with such grand and rich ways to spend our time, when we can simply bemoan our banquet of options when there are still people in the world entertaining themselves with the tediously prosaic pursuit of simply surviving each day as the sun rises or sets, or, when time allows, drawing pictures in the dirt with a stick.

To finalize this statement, I must simply say, whatever you personally may believe is over-rated is irrelevant, you are products of a disposable culture with no inherent reference to true value, and thus, nothing is valuable, and no experience in virtual of the imagination will carry much weight, regardless.

Half life 2 - not because its a bad game, i believe its even quite a good game but I hate how almost every PC gamer I've met praises it as if its the second coming of Jesus.

Uncharted 3 - loved the second but when I played the third I was just sick and tired of exactly the same shit and I just don't understand the rave behind this game.

Every call of duty since the MW 1 - need I say more.

I have a friend who gushes about it a lot so maybe I have a skewed view.

Bioshock. Played it and got bored at the third level.

Crackdown was better, but not by much. It was just 'GO KILL BAD GUYS'

And the old Pokemon games. Yes I know they were the first ones, but they could have done more.

The difference is that Hideo Kojima never wanted to make MGS2. He deliberately used meme theory in MGS2 to deconstruct the very idea of a video game, went out of his way to insult the player, and made the ending so deliberately confusing and indecipherable that you would just give up on trying to understand it. This was all part of his insane plan to get fans to hate him so he wouldn't have to make more games. Comparing that to something where the game cocked up the ending that badly, while actually trying to do well, is insulting.
So, do you have anything to back up that claim, or is it something you learned at Conspiracy Theory College?
As crazy as that theory is it does make more sense than the actual ending of MGS2.

I really do get the impression MGS2 was very rushed and Kojima has always spoken ambivalently about sequels to MGS1, he seemed a lot more keen on MGS3 which seemed to be made with a lot more forethought and was much more rounded.
MGS3 is my favorite game of all time.

The storyline of it isn't too hard to follow either, but in the sequels like Portable Ops and Peace Walker it gets a bit iffy

Grand Theft Auto IV: I had a lot of fun with the game when it was new but after beating the game a couple of times to see the extent of Nico's choices, I kind of lost interest. A few months later I got the Saint's Row double pack and Saint's Row 2 made me seriously reconsider my opinion of Grand Theft Auto IV.

Final Fantasy XIII: Remember a while ago when (on Zero Punctuation) Yahtzee said something along the lines of, 'modern games have been skipping meals so as to fit into the prettiest dresses and now it appears they're sticking their fingers down their throats too'? I think this fits FFXIII really well. It's a fucking beautiful game, I wouldn't ever deny that but it's really insubstantial like a single piece of Unagi sushi. You only control one character in combat? A majority of the game is set in linear corridors? Every one of the main characters are human (possibly not Vanille)?! Like I said, it's a beautiful game and I liked the fact that you could ride the Summons around but they didn't have the same punch as Summons past. Also can't see how there could have been enough demand for a sequel (outside of Japan).

Yoshi's Island: It seems to follow me around, being on the SNES, GBA and recently given away to members of the Ambassador Program (so I'll assume it's a more popular entry out of the Mario ). It's not a bad game and as far as escort missions go, I think it's one of the best examples of how to do it but it's still a giant Mario brand escort quest. I like playing as Yoshi, the worlds/levels are well done and nice looking but, the bosses are all laughably easy and the biggest threat seems to be losing Mario while close to the top border of the screen where in some versions he's instantly whisked away.

Halo 2 & 3: I loved the first Halo to death, playing through the first five levels over and over after having beaten the thing. Halo 2 was fun too but it didn't seem as polished as the first one. It seemed like it was easier to jump over the invisible walls and skip sections of the levels (of course there were some bits you could just run past). The NPC humans all looked freaking hideous too. Halo 3 didn't seem to have as many level-skip options but it felt like something was missing like boss battles. I've only read one of the books and have no interest in looking for the others that being said forgive my ignorance when I ask, What happened to the Gravemind?! Having the final boss of Halo 3 be who it was would have been like having a lone Claptrap be the last thing you fight in Borderlands (I never made it that far in Borderlands...the final boss isn't Claptrap, is it?)

The Witcher 2 and recently released Alan Wake (PC) come to mind. Like someone said, TW2 is only hard because you keep fighting the controls, and Alan Wake is even worse for the same reason. A shame really because I expected much more.

Oh, and of course every COD after MW2 is a re-release of the same thing with a slightly different excuse... Uh, I mean story.

At this point almost every game using scripts bores me to death.

lol, hey look another thread where the gaming hipsters can talk about how undeserving of praise everything is, and how every single popular game is overrated cause we don't have plenty of those. Especially love the people who list every cliche big game like if they were copying and pasting it from a games that won "best of the year award" list.

The Uncharted series. Now don't get me wrong, I love the games. Hell, Uncharted was one of my top games of 2011. But damn, they really get too much praise. Really IGN, a 10 for Uncharted 3? A 9 or 9.5, I'd definitely agree with, but the game (Great as it is) is definitely not perfect. Though I must admit, it has some surprisingly good multiplayer for a game that focuses on the singleplayer campaign.
