The only game I've ever not wanted to play because of the main character is Final Fantasy XII.
I can't put my finger on it, but I really, really don't like Vaan for some reason...

Eh, I always consider the main character to be more of a blank slate that I'm controlling than some character with real attributes.

There are some characters who looked so dumb that I didn't consider the game due to their art direction, but that's about it.

As for the recent guys don't want to play girl avatars. I'd say it doesn't matter one bit. I mean, I wouldn't want to have to undergo special efforts to woo a male character or anything. That would be tedious.

I can't recall a main character breaking the game for me.

As much as I don't care for Marcus Fenix or how boring master chief is they never broke the game for me. Sometimes having an unlikable character may be something I end up liking if they grow out of it like Luke from Tales of the Abyss.

The main character I disliked the most was Connor but even when I really hated him I didn't consider dropping the game for him. These days I think he's somewhat well done. Yes, Connor is rude, entitled, whiney, threats Achilles like crap and breaks more then he fixes but I suspect he may be put more in the wrong then Ezio to make the Templars and particularly Haythen Kenway be in the right for once. Connor being such a jerk actually improved my already high opinion of Haythen quite a bit, why can't we play as him the entire game?

Now about Kratos. I don't like him as a main character because he how hilariously fails at being a good guy but think he's perfectly fine as a character....when you accept your playing as the villain and the gods are the antiheroes, I don't think the games themselves got that message. Kratos does come off as ruthless but God of war III really seemed to think you where supposed to be rooting for Kratos rather then Zeus. I was quite happy with Zeus yelling ''Don't fail Kratos, for once in your pathetic life don't fail!''

I love you.

Batman is an idiot. In addition to that game having way too many crack-the-vent-open quick time events, the idea that this pajama-wearing self-important clown goes around tip-toeing to make sure he only hits bad guys hard enough to knock them down and never ever accidentally kills anyone, crook or civilian, is (here it comes) batshit retarded. I hate the very idea of Batman so much.

Attention Batman: you kill people. You have to. Gotham is not a magical universe where only bad people die because of you. Just because the camera pans somewhere else doesn't mean that people offscreen aren't dead because of your actions. DEAL WITH IT.
Weeeell, being a fictional story and all, I'm pretty sure Gotham is a magical universe where only bad people die because etc etc.

While I don't like Batman, I actually do like the idea of a strictly non-lethal hero.
I mean, I know it is a fictional place. And a non-lethal hero is great. A character like Corvo works for it because of his sneak attack, ghost hero style. But Batman is a one-man army who blows up Interstates and flies through downtown streets going 150mph. People die. It's the suspension of disbelief breaking for me. I know its fiction, I accept that. But I can't stay in the story anymore than I could if suddenly Batman had a magic flying carpet. Sure the story is fiction so you can do whatever, but within the confines of his universe, that should be an unlikely event. Same applies for him detonating devices and flying through parking garages. SOMEONE DIES SOMETIMES.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

His name is Edge Maverick.

And that should tell you how fucking stupid the cast in that game is. My wife played, and the battles are fun, the game mechanics engaging, but that whole cast can jump off a cliff. Whoever wrote them is a terrible.
You didn't like Lymle? She is easily the cutest and most creepy character in any game ever . I always had her in my party just so i can see her say 'kay . I hated Edge though, he's unlikable even by Jrpg standards , and i LIKE Jrpgs .

OT: No i never not wanted to play a game because of the protagonist . That doesn't mean that i like every Tom, Dick and Harry i play as in a game , but i the game is good i don't care about the protagonist . Not to mention i don't care if it's male or female, but that's a topic that has been done to death .

lso, is there no chance of us ever seeing a Bob Kane swashbuckling 'Gee Whizz!' 60's Batman game?
I always associate Bob Kane Batman with this:

Yeah, the "no killing" rule wasn't always a part of Batman's character.

OT: This almost happened with Lost Odyssey because Kaim starts out being bloody rude to people for no real reason. I don't mean that he's kinda moody, I can understand why he'd be a bit moody, but for the first part of the game he kinda acts like an asshole. That doesn't last long, though, and I was able to enjoy the game.

Warcraft 3. Arthas f---ing Menethir.

Thread over, I win.

...Ok I should probably elaborate a bit on that rather broad statement, so here goes.

Arthas is a humourless spoilt pretty boy with zero morals or judgement. Every petty, dumb, obnoxious thing he does, you have to guide him through. His voice is annoying. His look is annoying (seriously, that hair). Everything about him is annoying.

And the worst thing about him? Once you've finished the "Human" campaign, you think you're finally rid of the douchebag, and he shows up AGAIN for the undead one. Yep, Arthas is the gift that just keeps on giving.

What a gigantic douche.

My wife started saying "Kay" while we were in bed together.

Fastest way to end intimacy I've ever seen.

I'd never ever play any Mass Effect with MaleShep, that guy just drones when he speaks with no god damn emotion what so ever. It was especially hard to finish the first one after playing it for like, 45 hours with Jennifer Hale's amazing voice work first and i fucking love ME 1.

Then 2 comes along and Hale is the only reason I'm playing it through to the end! I tried to finish my MaleShep campaign there too but fuck that, first the universe turns boring and now I have to listen him the whole way through?! Can say I'm not touching him for the third one.

While I can't think of one that I actively avoided, I suppose I would be a lot less inclined to play as new Dante in the new DMC game. He seems so insufferable plus I wasn't a big fan of original Dante to begin with and the new one looks like a slightly more annoying one to me. That being said if someone gave me a free copy of the game, I'd play it, but I won't go out of my way to try it anytime soon.
He's really only a dick in the first level, he changes pretty sharply after the second and becomes closer to the Dante from the earlier games just with more swearing, cause it add 'so much' to it (it didn't)

Dust: An Elysian Tail.

I watched a video of the game and, although it looks like a really good game in almost every way, the main character seems to be an utterly generic, insufferable, brooding furry character. And, no, it's not because he's an anthropomorphic animal. I have no problem with Sly or Crash. It's the fact that he's written like a terrible Shadow the Hedgehog fanfiction.

Also, that flying companion thing seems even more irritating than Tails.
shush you, Fidget was not annoying. Rather have her around then Navi. Anyway, I'm gonna guess you never made it to the burned out village on top of the mountain, it, sadly, is near the end of the game (like right before the final area) it's kind of character important thing. Not sure where you got brooding though, he didn't really spend much time bitching about his own problems unless some one else mentioned them (IE his 'memory loss').

Now that i'm done defending the games I like, an answer!!!

Kratos in GoW2; Kinda lost interest after it dawned on me that Kratos was basically throwing a temper tantrum like a god damned two year old who wasn't getting his way.

Vann in FF12; He really has no reason to exist, I mean the story sucked regardless but he really had no reason to be apart of the game at all.

A protagonist I hate won't stop me from playing a game. A protagonist who bores me will stop me from playing a game. I won't even bother to pick up a game that promises me a generic, grizzled, grunting dude; I want to play as someone crazy, someone I haven't seen before doing something I haven't thought of. I want games to surprise me.

I can certainly understand not liking the main protagonist, but sometimes I don't understand how it can put some people off of the entire game.
I think the only game I was put off of because of the characters was Star Ocean: the Last Hope. I mean, even for some of the ditzy and stereotypical anime types they were bad...

I saw Metal Gear Solid on here...my heart...my soul...why?

Never happened. The opposite, wanting to play a game because of the "protagonist", happened twice, with Rapture and with Columbia, but the latter turned out to be completely boring while the first was simply the best protagonist ever in a game.

1st thing that came to mind was the fellow from Lost Odyssey. Which sucked because I really enjoyed those short story regarding his past. Obviously there were 2 different writers.

Although the characters in general were starting to grate on me.....I really wanted to like that game...hehe

Well I didn't feel like playing Tales of the Abyss at first, seeing as I was stuck being a pampered asshole. Obviously stuff happened afterwards.

Xenosaga - The main character has to be one of the most selfish, manipulative, arrogant, self-righteous, hypocritical, emotionally immature, and whiniest protagonists I have EVER seen. And of course to rub salt in the wound, she's also the least interesting character of the bunch as well as the most superfluous. She's (with NO hyperbole) the gaming equivalent of Bella Swan

The Witcher, because Geralt is both hideous & a womanizer, & the womanizing is apparently a big part of the game, & I am a woman who'd much prefer he was an attractive manizer or at least bi. (Says the incredulous hypocrite who had no problem playing Duke Nukem Forever).

Crysis 2 and 3. Same character, right? I can't even remember, that's how shitty those games and the protagonist were. I rolled my eyes every time Prophet started talking about himself and how heavy his burden was, or some pretentious nonsense like that.

Most JRPGs. Seems most of the time like they are ticking off a checklist of what will make me like him/her instead of just making a character.
I didn't mind Alcatraz in Crysis 2, his story is quite interesting (Yhatzee says it quite well in his review), but Prophet is just irritating in 3. I stopped playing it because his voice was annoying.

Other than that I always feel slightly annoyed when a game has a generic white skinned brown haired male as the protagonist. I still play these games, if I didn't my options would be quite limited, but some variety would be nice.
