Or, you know, the exact opposite of the PsP-Go.
No it's pretty much a mk2 Go.
Download only games, proprietary storage, non replacable battery, limited connectivity, (most likely) absurd price.

Can't fault Sony for sticking to the plan though, even if it is the same plan that flushed their last big hardware release down the toilet.

~Edit, my mistake, read up the spec and noticed it's cartridge based. Although proprietry SD cards is a weird decision, that's going to hold off piracy for all of thirty seconds. Still much better than the -Go though I have to admit.

wait... people are surprised at Sony selling overpriced stuff?
After they did it right with PS3, yeah. People loved them for using regular 2.5" HDDs for PS3 whereas Microsoft was using more expensive drives in proprietary cases. So what does Sony do? Go back to making expensive proprietary bullshit.

I'm going to be so angry if they make another Dissidia game, because then I'd have to get one of these :(

Sony has made an art out of shooting themselves in the foot. Just when you think "no they have to have learned by now?", they whip out their pistol look at us with an S*** eating grin, stick their foot out and pull the trigger.

Next generation of handhelds will ship without a START-button.

I'm looking forward to a future where each part of a console is sold separately and then needs to be assembled like a piece of IKEA furniture.

Someone high up in Sony clearly has even more shares invested in Nintendo. First, the Vita gets pushed back to PAST the holiday season for the US, giving the 3DS plenty of time to pump out it's two big system sellers and have Christmas all to itself. THEN, if that wasn't absurd enough, we now have the impossibly priced memory cards which will basically guarantee no one will want this thing.

I know Sony likes to live in the past, but man. It's not enough to compete with Nintendo for handhelds and always lose, but now that Nintendo's handhelds are doing bad you have to purposely cripple yourself in order to keep the gap between you two? lol, pressure must have got to them.

Vita = stillborn

I can already see it's little miniature gravestone... it's so sad.

I'm serious, where do you get the bass balls to charge THIRTEEN TIMES AS MUCH for flash memory as it costs in RETAIL!?!!?

I find it HUGELY ironic that the only chance PSV now has is if there is a huge market of pirated cards, something that emulates $2 SD-cards to act as PSV cards via some sort of adapter... and this after decades of paranoia from Sony over piracy.

Sony, I understand trying to make some profit on the memory, but 1300%?!?!? You are charging as much for a 32GB memory stick as and 8GB ipod touch! Which covers dangerously the same ground and your PSV!

I was just thinking the other day of all the games I haven't downloaded from Xbox Live because I don't have a hard drive big enough to store them. Don't Microsoft and Sony (and even Nintendo) realize, that without providing us the storage to buy their virtual games their profit margins are hurt worse than if they sold us storage at a reasonable price? (or, heaven forbid, include it in the console itself without making consumers pay extra for fairly standard functionality).

Well I was all set to buy this on launch, the key word is WAS

Edit: Where did all the Vita hate come from, other than the price it looks great and every thread about it on the Escapist has been for praise

Just blowing off steam. Maybe the cards will be egregiously overpriced at release -- just like Wii cards, which have dropped to somewhere between "badly overpriced" and "somewhat overpriced" -- Or they'll go the sane route and just stick to 2-3x market value. It's not like having the *still* badly-overpriced, proprietary HD's hurt the 360 too much...

We've just gotta wait and see.

As for video and other content...That's what I have a real TV and my computer for. My eyesight is bad enough as it is, thank you, I don't need to strain them by watching a movie on a tiny little screen.

Launch + 1 year = third party device: same size, 1/4 price.

This is a bit of sleight of hand on Sony's part, mind. They chopped a bit off the base price tag to compete with the 3ds on price, then hid the difference in a separate (but equally required) addon purchase. The system, all in all, costs $300 on launch... They just want to make their customers think it costs $250. Same story as the xbox arcade, really (although slightly sleazier).

Hopefully some cheaper third party cards will be available by this time next year. I won't be able to get one at launch, but maybe next Christmas. These cards definitely seal the whole "not getting it at launch" deal for me...

Your words paired with your avatar is the best thing ever. It doesn't need anything else to properly explain the tone of the article.

OT: Well, my Dad wanted to buy one, but if this holds any water then he's going to end up buying it much later than planned.

This is commercial suicide. *facepalm*

That's what they always do though. Remember the original cost of memory cards for the PSP and PS2?
I don't know the cost of a ps2 mc to do the math but they might continue to be more expensive per megabyte.

Why are people surprised. Sony make proprietary storage media and charge a fortune for it. From betamax to minidisc

...

Some go on to market success like 3.5 inch fdd or blu-ray, most fail though. This is the most obvious thing that with a new device Sony would bring out a proprietary storage medium for it. If fact they invent media, then try to decide which of their upcoming products they will lumber with it. This was as predictable as the Sun rising in the morning.
But the psp go used M2 (though propetary it was multi-porpouse) i guess people was expecting at least that.

All stationary consoles (that i can think of) use propetary storage devices so they aren't more evil than the competition in that.

They miss the christmas launch window and then add on this memory card. With the 3DS sales climbing with Super Mario 3D land, and Mario kart and consol bundles on the way it looks like Soney is going to hand nintendo this generation again.

Wow, serious? Hey, what do you think the odds are that the memory card prices have been gouged? I mean if other retailers sell 2-dollar HDMI wires for upwards of 60, what are the odds these memory sticks aren't worth nearly as much as GS wants for them? Of course even if you can find a non-sony brand, the PS stuff has always found ways of crapping out when you try using another company's storage devices with them.
