I hate them.

Tune in some other day to find out why. Or just watch Zero Originality. Suffice it to say I have my own horror stories to add to his.

The employees there are really good at their job, the prices are good and selling video games there is convenient.

I have no quarrel with them.
The prices are good? What have you been smoking and why aren't you sharing? I've seen Walmart sell certain new games for less than Gamestop is selling that same game used. And that's all it really comes down to for me...Gamestop is FAR too expensive, for both games and accessories. We have a store here called Entertainmart where you can get just about anything for 40% of the cost of Gamestop. Even newly-released Xbox 360 games you can get there at $45 or so.

Which reminds me of the other problem with Gamestop. Trade-in rates are freaking ridiculous there. Entertainmart will take a newly-released game in on trade for $35-$45 depending on the game. Gamestop will give you a maximum of $25 for just about anything...more often they'll give you less than $10. They're a bunch of greedy bastards.
I went to an entertainmart when I lived in Springfield, MO. As far as game prices it was really hard to beat them. Great place.

i dont shop there for 2 main reasons.

1. gamecrazy has better pices

2. the employees that work at the one by my house have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. seriously they are either 40 something year old women who have no idea about games(not saying a woman in her 40's cant be a gamer but these obviously arent) or guys that pretty much only play halo and cod andknow nothing about other games.

I usually go to game, they pay more for used games and sell them cheaper too, they also offer significant discounts to clients with card (a 70? game gives you something like 7? on your next buy [Yes, 70? is the price on the majority of games in Portugal, screw you Americans!]). However, when I madly want something on European launch day, game usually gets it 1-2 days late and I have to go to gamestop (read: Assassin's Creed 2, Bayonetta)

They sell used console games, and as I refuse to pay full price for any console game, I shop there. I really have no other opinion except to say that anyone who gets worked up over a store is just plain silly.

Unless it's about Wal-Mart, then kudos to them. :p

Never seen it in the UK so obviously I don't shop there. Sounds pretty bad though. I go to GAME though I often get sick of them ripping me off so I also frequent good ol' Gamestation, the best video game shop there is.

disdainfully i want a job at gamestop. there arn't any other game stores in my area and walmart and target will rip you even more than gamestop. i want to wok there because i'm a computer science major and i want to know more on how gamers think because i want to get into the industry and work for a game company( not ea. those pompous twits treat their employees like blood twits. the executives are absolute wankers, the whole lot of them) and eventually start my own small game company in about 10-15 years, maybe sooner. anyhow, the employees don't nag me much when i'm there and most of the time walk in there and look at games for 15-30 minutes and leave without buying a thing. this happens to all the gamestops i go to so i don't have a cold heared hatred for them, but i do dislike some of their less than spectacular corporate business practices.

I thought we wouldn't have any Gamestops here in the United K, but I found one a few weeks back. Not too bad, I have to say, but I prefer Gamestation any day.
Exactly this. The first Gamestop I saw was in Koln, Germany. I so badly wanted to go in, but apparently the christmas markets were the priority. I was so pissed. I always shop at GameStation, unfortunately, my mum always gets things from GAME. I feel like I traitor to myself when I see those big purple lables.
Ahaha, it's so true...you do feel like GAME is the last resort, eh? They can't compete with Gamestations range or their returns policy.
Well, I don't know whether it's just the store near me, but I feel that it appeals more to people who are new to gaming, or people who buy gaming items for others, for example, my mum. I feel the GameStation is aimed towards the kind of people who've been into gaming for a while, and need a more, lets say rough, jagged environment. Just being in GAME makes me feel like a big purple corporate whore. It's like everything is run by men in shiny suits, GameStation feels like it's run by gamers, but like I said, it might just be the stores near me.
No, to be honest that's the same sort of feel about the stores in my town; The GAME seems to be run by people who sort-of game, but it's mostly on the Wii or when they're not out washing the car or attending a barbecque or whatever. The Gamestation, the other hand, is run by guys you can take one look at and decide that they game, and they probably do it whilst listening to Machine Head as well.
But yeah, I like the way you put that, that's a very succinct description. The most ridiculous part is though, were you aware that GAME bought out Gamestation quite some time ago?
I was aware of that. Me and my friends knew a guy who worked at GameStation, then he was offered a job at GAME, which is only a dozen yards away for more money. He took the job, and now plays games less, and has to wear a shirt and tie. Do you really think a gamer from GameStation could pull that look off? He used to wear jeans and the GameStation polo, like he'd just got back from a college lecture, now he looks like a failing entrepreneur. I can't believe a store, and a gaming store at that, would have that much of an impact. We always say he moved up in the world, but he confesses he preferred his time at GameStation, as he didn't have to search through an entire stockroom of games because of one confused mother. JUST ONE. Imagine how he feels at Christmas!?

Wow, that's a good example of the divide between those stores. I don't think it's right to be honest, Gamestation definitely have the true idea of how it should all be presented.
Oh god, I can't imagine him at Christmas O_O I weep for him.

I used to really enjoy going there (and still do, when I can get my brother-in-law to get me a manager's discount), but in recent years, I've come to prefer eBay. There is also a local game store chain I frequent quite a bit.

It's the closest game store to my house but I never shop there anymore. I can deal with gouged prices for used items now that I get paid a lot. What I can't deal with are the fruitcakes that work there and make any shopping experience there take 10x longer than it should. They must be trained to be so annoying.

I've been to most of the ones in nyc and the only one I can tolerate shopping in is the one under Rockefeller Center. The ones in Queens are the worst. I'd rather go shopping for my wife's tampons with my grandmother.

It's too bad they have a pretty tight monopoly on game retail. They really are one of the worst things to happen to gamers since ET for the atari. They're one of the reasons that gamers are treated like suckers by the industry and publicity whores.

I can't say I hate them, but they do suck.

Overpriced games, underpaid employees, fuckhead managers, and bullshit trade in values.

Though, there are some pretty cool people who work there, and I can't get games anywhere else.

I've never had any issues with Gamestop. The folks there seem pretty cool and knowledgeable, and it's rare they flog the Game Informer subs. with me. Overall I give my local Gamestop an 8 out of 10.:)
