They have to, the rules they are handed by the ESRB and corporate are the same as the way the tobacco laws are: if you look under 30 they have to card you.
Wouldn't this rule be in effect everywhere then? I have never been carded anywhere else I've bought a game, including Wal-Mart, Target, and Best Buy. I used to work in a convienience store, and I've been in position where I've had to use my discretion in selling tobacco and beer, and I can safely say that if someone who looked like me came in, they would not be carded. And not once did I ever, in all my years working the job, get ticketed for selling to a minor, and that's actual harmful stuff, not just video games.

It's stupid to think you're going to look at someone and try to determine if they are 30 or older. It's much easier to look at someone like myself and know if they are over 18.

I thought we wouldn't have any Gamestops here in the United K, but I found one a few weeks back. Not too bad, I have to say, but I prefer Gamestation any day.
Exactly this. The first Gamestop I saw was in Koln, Germany. I so badly wanted to go in, but apparently the christmas markets were the priority. I was so pissed. I always shop at GameStation, unfortunately, my mum always gets things from GAME. I feel like I traitor to myself when I see those big purple lables.
Ahaha, it's so true...you do feel like GAME is the last resort, eh? They can't compete with Gamestations range or their returns policy.

I don't hate Gamestop. The employees are nice, and I usually have fun little conversations with them when I ask them to give me my damn discount on Bayonetta, but they have to call a out off state store for their code. Oh sorry, that turned into a mini rant. But I don't hate them. :D

I did work experience for school in gamestop. It was depressing because they played the same shit pop music over and over again. Also the manager there didn't trust me and made me stay in front of the cameras at all times so I couldn't steal anything. Fucking wanker. Gamestop gets a thumbs down from me - I go to Xtravision now (Irish video store), because the people who work in my local one are funny and the games are cheaper.

Between Steam, Impulse & Good Old games I never have to step into a Gamestop. On those rare occasions when I cant get a game via digital distribution, I always shop Amazon or Newegg.

As a PC gamers, I don't want to step foot in a Gamestop, which is good because I get the distinct impression that as a PC Gamer, Gamestop doesn't WANT me stepping foot into their store.

Well, I don't know whether it's just the store near me, but I feel that it appeals more to people who are new to gaming, or people who buy gaming items for others, for example, my mum. I feel the GameStation is aimed towards the kind of people who've been into gaming for a while, and need a more, lets say rough, jagged environment. Just being in GAME makes me feel like a big purple corporate whore. It's like everything is run by men in shiny suits, GameStation feels like it's run by gamers, but like I said, it might just be the stores near me.

The only problem I had with gamestop is there return policy and the ammount of credit you can get. So I say I will never trade in any game until I can get at lease half of the orginal price paid.

But I also stop tradeing in so I can hold on to my few oldy but goodie games from WAY back.
So no offense to gamestop, there awesome!!!!

I get all my Games from Steam....I don't have to crawl away from my desk to get them.

Though I do have a friend who works there, and he has to deal with some stupid customers...

At the one I usually go to the employees are always really cool and helpful. The edge card is also a great deal and pays for itself in no time.

It's all kind of moot for me anyway because they are the only local store where I can actually sell used games, except maybe a pawn shop, so I really don't have much of a choice.

No, to be honest that's the same sort of feel about the stores in my town; The GAME seems to be run by people who sort-of game, but it's mostly on the Wii or when they're not out washing the car or attending a barbecque or whatever. The Gamestation, the other hand, is run by guys you can take one look at and decide that they game, and they probably do it whilst listening to Machine Head as well.
But yeah, I like the way you put that, that's a very succinct description. The most ridiculous part is though, were you aware that GAME bought out Gamestation quite some time ago?

It's not so bad, they have good deals sometimes. Although they rape you big time in trades!

I hate Gamestop for 3 reasons:

1. Used games are typically only $5 less than their new equivalent.
2. They are getting developers to make exclusive Gamestop pre-order content.
3. I pre-ordered DA:O CE from them, and they called to tell me it was in, I asked them to hold it for a week because I was out of town, and they fucking sold it on me.

So yeah.... fuck Gamestop / EB Games.

I never really had much of a problem with my local Gamestop. The employees were fairly knowledgeable and as I generally only have money to buy used games, the prices were pretty good.

Then we had a Play n' Trade not too much farther away and I've found that the atmosphere there is much nicer. The employees are very friendly and talkative about games and I've seen several instances where they will explain in detail to a mother or aunt detail about a game that may or may not be appropriate for their kids and even offer alternatives. There's no push to buy games or pre-order, and while the selection at that store is smaller than at GameStop, they will try to find what you want at one of their other stores and if they do have it, it'll be there only a couple of days later at the latest.

In my honest opinino, I cant really understand how can any gamer NOT like gamestop. Its one of the main shops that sell promarily video games. They also carry rather obscure games, which is why it is one of my top places to shop in terms of gaming.

(P.S. I am not an employee,bastards!)

Mine seems to be the mystical well-staffed Gamestop, where literally every single employee is both knowledgeable and not a dick.

For some reason, where-ever I happen to live... the closest store within walking distance is a Gamestop... a bit creepy...

But yeah, I shop there every now and then. I used to have an Edge Card, but after I sort of eased into becoming a PC gamer, I haven't had any use for it.

At least in Finland (that little poop in Northern Europe, that's where I live) they have a permanent "Buy 3, pay 2" deal for wee older PC games. Once I bought Splinter Cell Trilogy, Fallout Collection and Mirror's edge for 13,95 with a gift card, so 7 games for that price isn't bad. When I tried to sell them a just-off-the-shelf copy of Fracture, a third-person shooter released in December 2008 however, they woulda given me just 50 FREAKING CENTS for it. I don't know whether it's dickheadism or the depression, but once when I sold 'em my Phantom Hourglass they gave me half of the price back in 2007.

And charging 17,95 for the first God of War these days is just cow poo.

I've never even seen a Gamestop outside of RoosterTeeth's MW2 comic lol

I basically just use GAME and Gamestation and G-Force every now and again.
