Gawker.com to Shut Down Next Week

All of Gawker Media's six other websites, including Kotaku, will remain in operation.

Gawker.com's J.K. Trotter announced on the online magazine's website [http://gawker.com/gawker-com-to-end-operations-next-week-1785455712] today that as of next week, all Gawker.com operations will cease. The decision comes following Univision's successful $135 million bid for Gawker Media's six other websites, including gaming magazine Kotaku.

According to Gawker CEO Nick Denton, Gawker.com staffers will soon be assigned to other editorial roles, either at one of the other six sites or elsewhere within Univision.

If you've been keeping up with the online journalism world, you will know that Gawker's troubles started when it pissed off infamous wrestler Hulk Hogan, who The Onion [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/166912-Gawker-Media-to-Pay-Hulk-Hogan-115-Million]

Near-term plans for Gawker.com's coverage, as well as the site's archives, have not yet been finalized.

Thank Jesus Dalai Lama Christ for this news. While Kotaku broke important news at one point in time, the website long ago became filled with the kind of fluff that should be reserved for forums.

Kotaku isn't dying yet, Univision is only killing Gawker.com, with the rest of Gawker's properties (Kotaku, Jezebel, Deadspin, Lifehacker and Jalopnik) sticking around for at least the moment. Univision views Gawker itself as too much of a liability; they were only interested in acquiring Gawker Media's other sites.

I am aware of this. I'm, hoping that now that someone else owns the site, they might actually...Shock! Horror!...report news again, instead of "Show us your Doodle" (yes, that was a running thing they did).

Well as it turns out Hulk Hogan still has the ability to take down huge opponents for good.

Non-sarcastically: Hopefully this means that those other sites will actually start reporting fucking news again.

I kind of hope that Hulk Hogan disappears from the limelight forever now, so he can end his career knowing that his final move was to suplex a truly villainous company out of existence.

I don't know what Gawker feels they were doing, but they always came across to me as a mean spirited gossip tabloid. And I only understand by a very narrow margin what the difference is between what they did and how revenge porn would be viewed under the law.

And I also don't really understand how they can conflate themselves with real journalism. Like some people say the closure of Gawker was chilling, but is it really? They must be close to the lowest of the low. I mean they certainly beat out Buzzfeed etc who's article template seems to be a list of things kids got for christmas in 1998, and the fat girl in our office tried to shop in H&M and nothing fit so you're sexist. But Jesus that's a low low bar.

Maybe they see themselves as a news room as imagined by Aaron Sorkin fighting off a villainous billionaire and tragically being defeated as the first domino in chain reaction that will destroy the concept of journalistic integrity as we know it. I suppose that if the website or something like it was putting food on your table too you could look at it this way.

But they did something pretty horrible, either with the intention to ruin Hulk Hogan's life or with no regard for whether or not they did. Where is the fucking heroism in that? I'm sure even victims of this kind of adultery don't want their life shattering moments forcefully breaking through the monotonous scrolling pictures of loved ones on someones Facebook timeline. Who cares what billionaire backed Hulk Hogan either? It wouldn't have made a difference if Gawker hadn't done anything wrong.

Given that Gawker has done things like post videos of a woman getting raped in a sports bar, there really isn't a narrow margin on some of the things they did.

Good riddance to the site. If Univision can actually force some journalistic standards on the Gawker sites that it now owns, even better.

You think Haim Saban's univision has journalistic standards? That's cute. It's going to go even further batshit insane leftist.

Good fucking riddance. I hope the people who wrote for Gawker are able to get back on their feet relatively quickly somehow. Just hopefully not through a writing gig. >_>
