hehe he said call of duty. subliminal advertising?

joking aside it's good to see developers show their human side. Gearbox are aces in my book.

Wow, seems gearbox will do any old little favor for a fan. I think I'm gonna have to ask claptrap to help me move a refrigerator.

This is why I can't bring myself to dislike gearbox.

Sure their games are questionable, but their undying loyalty to their fanbase is really, really touching. I really like Gearbox in moments like this :3

wow......just wow. Suddenly all the respect I lost for Gearbox with their Duke Nukem PR bs has returned with this move. Good job Gearbox, nice to see this side of you (lets hope we don't have to see that other side [Duke PR nonsense] again.

Gearbox, this was by far one of the classiest things I've ever seen!

I listened to the eulogy... The part about standing by your friends is what got me... By far one of the most touching things I've ever heard.

While I will certainly take my hat off and give Gearbox an appreciative and respectful nod for this marvelous gesture towards fans, I would also like to remind everyone that this isn't anything new. There's so many examples of the bond between devs and fans that allow for these gestures to flourish and be seen. Blizzard did it... what, is it three times now in World of Warcraft? One of the most impressive ones were the quest in Shattrah, where there's now an NPC modeled directly from the main character of a player that died all too soon. A poem written to/about that player is one of the questitems you need to deliver. There's other such things seen in that game, and similar things seen in many other games.

By all means, show Gearbox the love they've earned with this gesture, but also remember all the other developers out there that also shows they care. Not with PR stunts, not with grand proclamations designed to increase subscriptions or game purchases... but with those quiet little additions that many might not even notice... but that will mean the world to those who do recognize the gestures in question.

Game Devs are people, just like the fans they gather over the years. And contrary to how the world feels like most days... most people do have heartstrings that can be tugged, and the empathy needed to take the time out to do something special for someone else.

Remember that when -you- find yourself in a position to make someone else's life just a little bit more special.
Blizzard did a whole epic multi stage quest thing in wrath of the lich king about a fan's life and death.
Edit: It is important to note that the fan actually was in some way involved with WoW development.

Gearbox, confound you...

I love you for Borderlands, you betray me with Duke Nukem, then you turn around and show the side of you I loved with a gesture like this.

Gearbox, props to you.

Finally,

*joins in glass raising*

To Michael! May you rest in peace.

I remember on these forums answering a thread about crying as a man the other day. Let me just say: I stated at the time I had only cried twice in joy; and sure I've come close to crying a few times in sadness. But let me just say that eulogy actually made me tear up - and I hated borderlands.
RIP Michael, cancer is a cruel and random thing.

Here's the eulogy on SoundCloud [http://soundcloud.com/tony-12-2/claptrap-eulogy-for-michael/s-tmwpd]

That was really moving, and swell of them to do. I'm not a fan of Borderlands, but I have just gained a ton of respect for Gearbox.

That was actually truly epic. Specially the breaking character. While it would have not been less if they didn't, it was made more that they did.
The lack of any real pointy pointy here it is truly shows it to be heartfelt and it is also shown in what was said.
This goes up there with other ingame metions of people lost. As best I know WOW has a small hidden memorial to a dev member, and Gothic 3, for it's shortcomings, touched me out of the blue with an end credit mention of a dev who passed before completion.
It is always a sad thing, but things like this make sure that even for a few breif moments, in the future, someone will remember them kindly and that counts for alot.

You know, in a day and age where most Video Game Companies PR has basically stemmed down to them trading insults with one another like three year olds and insulting fans...the fact that a developer can do something like this gives me some hope that maybe not all the nice developers have left the industry just yet. Good job Gearbox, good job...And Michael, don't worry, you can rest easy now Soldier..you can rest..
