I always thought that Borderlands was basically a cross between Halo, Fallout, and a comic book, with the least interesting bits of each. That said, it's a lot closer to what I want than Call of Duty, so it would have been nice to see some copies.
While the cel-shading may be the most recognizable bit of Borderlands' aesthetic, you can't deny it is unmistakable when compared with any other game aesthetic.Matthew94 said:Borderlands had humour? Wait, let me read that again. Borderlands had writing? Since when?
I wouldn't call cell shading distinctive.
Fifties style billboards? No, I'm pretty sure there haven't been many innovations as far as billboards go, so calling them fifty's style billboards is a bit unfair. It's like calling a Bicycle playing card used today an imitator for the cards back in the 1890s.Patrick_and_the_ricks said:Well Borderlands ripped it's entire atmosphere from Fallout, right down to the 50's style billboards and little mascot.
Though unlike the Vault boy, Clap Trap lacks the funny dark humor and feels more like "LAWL SO RANDUM".
I gotta ask, what is there to rip off in the first place?
Did Borderlands even bring anything new to the table?
Cell-shading style graphics that have been in use since the early 2000's?Mortuorum said:What, besides its distinctive visual style, clever writing and wickedly dark sense of humor?Buretsu said:Considering that Borderlands is Diablo with guns, I'd say there's not a lot original to rip off.
Yeah, I only ever play this game for short bursts until I can catch up to my level 22 buddy who started over a month ago.RJ 17 said:I can only imagine someone's already said something along these lines, but as far as "Why hasn't anyone tried to rip off our game yet?" The answer might be because you're game just...wasn't really that great.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my time with Borderlands, but it got pretty old pretty fast. Most every quest just sends you to a cave or new zone to kill a bunch of guys that look more similar than CoD terrorists (and you really gotta try to pull that off >.>)...only to have the next quest say "Now go do the same thing, only this time be sure to pick up the crystals while you're there."
Really that game is only tolerable if you've got friends to play with. I pity the gamer that finds themself soloing Borderlands.
