Gearbox Wonders Why People Aren't Ripping Off Borderlands

I always thought that Borderlands was basically a cross between Halo, Fallout, and a comic book, with the least interesting bits of each. That said, it's a lot closer to what I want than Call of Duty, so it would have been nice to see some copies.

Borderlands was one of the best and funniest games of that year. It's a shame it wasn't ripped off more. I'd much rather play Borderlands clones that are actually fun and stylish than Call of Battlefield ripoffs.

I would say because "Its to much work". Most companies are lazy, and want to make a quick buck. To make something half as amazing as Borderlands would require a lot of work. And work costs money.

Its easier just to Copy/paste the last game you produced with new textures and a few new models.

I said the same thing with BL1 came out. Why hasn't anyone done this before?

It was something that I passively noticed, where there still aren't any gun-based loot games. It makes no sense. Maybe it's because they know they won't get people buying yearly installments. BL1 has effectively lasted me 3 years. That's ridiculous when you think about it.

Plenty of developers make 5 hour long linear FPS all the time.

Adding rpg elements and ripping off Borderlands to standard fps is just more work than they want to do.

Considering that Borderlands is Diablo with guns, I'd say there's not a lot original to rip off.
What, besides its distinctive visual style, clever writing and wickedly dark sense of humor?
Borderlands had humour? Since when?

Wait, let me read that again. Borderlands had writing? Since when?

I wouldn't call cell shading distinctive.
While the cel-shading may be the most recognizable bit of Borderlands' aesthetic, you can't deny it is unmistakable when compared with any other game aesthetic.
Humor? Well, I'm only a few hours in (WOO! Steam sale!) and I'll agree with you. It's only gotten the occasional chuckle out of me, but then again, the same goes for other games I love with a post-apocalyptic dark humor (Fallout).

Well Borderlands ripped it's entire atmosphere from Fallout, right down to the 50's style billboards and little mascot.

Though unlike the Vault boy, Clap Trap lacks the funny dark humor and feels more like "LAWL SO RANDUM".

I gotta ask, what is there to rip off in the first place?
Did Borderlands even bring anything new to the table?
Fifties style billboards? No, I'm pretty sure there haven't been many innovations as far as billboards go, so calling them fifty's style billboards is a bit unfair. It's like calling a Bicycle playing card used today an imitator for the cards back in the 1890s.
And, I was under the impression Claptrap is supposed to be deliberately annoying and infuriating, not that the Vault Boy does anything funny considering he's a logo.

Yeah, I'd say it brought something new to the table.

Because people don't want a lifeless gameworld, with the particular problem of: "Kajillions of gun, and all of them suck."

Cell-shading style graphics that have been in use since the early 2000's?

Writing? What writing?

Humor? The game's not funny.

Really, not that much to rip off. It has guns and pretty cool enemies. That's about it.

I can only imagine someone's already said something along these lines, but as far as "Why hasn't anyone tried to rip off our game yet?" The answer might be because you're game just...wasn't really that great.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my time with Borderlands, but it got pretty old pretty fast. Most every quest just sends you to a cave or new zone to kill a bunch of guys that look more similar than CoD terrorists (and you really gotta try to pull that off >.>)...only to have the next quest say "Now go do the same thing, only this time be sure to pick up the crystals while you're there."

Really that game is only tolerable if you've got friends to play with. I pity the gamer that finds themself soloing Borderlands.

Dude they totally did it was called Dead Island and it was alright. Besides that I don't know why it is fun and seems like a good game to rip off and could be cool to have more 4 player class based shooters.

Probably because Borderlands is an amalgamation of Fallout, Quake, Doom, Duke Nukem, and many other FPS titles 4-player co-op that I'm having trouble thinking of at the moment. I think the best thing people could take away from Borderlands is the infinite weapons gimmick where you can pick up all the weapons in the game and will always find different weapon variants.

Because it's just shooter with abilities and cell-shaded characters. There is nothing to copy.

Yeah, I only ever play this game for short bursts until I can catch up to my level 22 buddy who started over a month ago.
This was by no means made for single-player.

On another note, I was really put off by the gameplay when I started off, but the moment I realized I was playing a class that didn't fit me at all, I switched and had a blast after that point.

He's right but he says it in a "dickish" way.

I'm reaaalllllyyy looking forward to Borderlands 2 :D. I doubt anybody would steal this genre anyway the idea of having bazillions of guns is just genius :)
