Gearbox Wonders Why People Aren't Ripping Off Borderlands

Well I love Borderlands to death, but I wouldnt say it's very original.

Considering that Borderlands is Diablo with guns, I'd say there's not a lot original to rip off.

To be fair, the RPGFPS genre started off pretty complex. All Gearbox did was distilled these two genres into their most basic elements and blended them together.

Torchlight was built from the start to be a Diablo clone, did anyone complain? no, it was fun, similar to Diablo and yet felt special in it's own way.

Probably because Blizz vets were involved with that. Nobody mines if you essentially copy an certain game as so long you were part of making that legacy.

Well, in BF3, you actually took on Iran. Why we didn't fight the PLR in middle-eastern maps is beyond me since they too had tanks and jets.

I'd love to see a clone, but at the same time, i'd rather not play it, as i'll always feel nostalgic for the Original/classic.

Also don't be conceded Randy, you have a good game but its the not the juggernaut you think it is. And be happy you don't have competition

Personally think competition in this case is the last thing they need, having to rush a game out to beat someone to the punch can murder your genre. Just look at what EA and Activision has done with shooters.

Getting slightly off topic here, and I don't really want to be the asshole who has to point this out, But Borderlands isn't cel-shaded. Everything is skinned to look like its hand drawn, sure, but it isn't cel-shaded.

What, besides its distinctive visual style, clever writing and wickedly dark sense of humor?

Did we play the same game I just saw Fallout with Shotguns equipped with Sniper Scopes, maybe I should have gone for longer than 3 hours, might be why I don't remember anything awesome.

OT: There were a bunch of games similar to Borderlands (Rage, Dead Island) but they're ripping off the source (Fallout 3) so I guess the lack of direct copies isn't all that surprising.

It's a first person shooter with RP elements thrown in, not a new idea or concept.

This. On top of that it has a loose storyline stretched over a relatively repetitive gameplay model. I think no one is trying to copy it because theres not exactly much to copy.

That whole album is quite good. Got a few plays on an Australian community station a few times.

Well I wouldn't say it's original.

I played the first one myself and it was literally Diablo formula in FPS form.

Yea it works until a certain point,but after playing a couple of hours with some friends it really gets dull like

Maybe Gearbox learned the secret. The same reason Angry Birds is a huge success and nobody has heard of the 8 gillion other physics based mobile platform artillery style games.

Game mechanics can and will be copied but the unique blend of mechanics and style is the soul of the game and that is something that can't be duplicated.

Another "cell shaded fps in a post apocalyptic setting with random weapon stats, light character customization, and xp based leveling" isn't going to work because it woudn't work because it wouldn't BE Borderlands.

It's simple why people don't rip off Borderlands: It's generally bad business practice to rip off a game that's, IMHO, completely and totally shitty to begin with, and itself ripped off games that are shitty (Diablo / Mass Effect / Dragon Age).

Comedy
Artsy/Digital graphics

Fallout 3/NV does all of the above minus Cel shading far better. I liked Borderlands, but it's not a game I'd be playing if something better were at hand. It's a solid filler title for me.

Personally I didn't enjoy it all that much. I have even more harsh opinion of it because of the ending :x

Although I would agree you could argue that incorporates things from Fallout, Diablo and a few other games.

That's pretty much what most authors have been saying about their industry for decades. Happens all the time in movies: Star Wars arrived and suddenly everyone else wanted to make their own Star Wars (itself not original). Indiana Jones ripped off a ton of those serials from the B&W era, Cartoons ripped off one another for ages as well.

It's a fine thing to ***** about, especially since Borderlands wasn't exactly full of originality either.

Borderlands? Ohh i remember now. It`s that shitty pc port that came out a long time ago. Not to mention how boring it was since even if it had rpg elements in it they were of the worst kind: go kill x, bring me y. Oh and i see some of you say it was funny. It wasn`t.

p.s. I lost my respect for gearbox because they declare things like this.
