I see a lot of fake people in here splitting hairs about proofs and lies. Just cut the crap already and welcome everyone who wants to belong, whatever their previous experience.

Hello
apparently you exist
I'm Welsh
I dont know any Welsh women who game properly, sure some own a ps2 and some have had a go on their brothers PS3. But none who would identify with the Gamer culture. Maybe there arent any in Wales, you would have thought I'd meet at least one though living in Cardiff the Welsh capital.

Well when ya receive the `fake geek` shit for showing your nerd in public like so many ladies do, it kinda teaches you to... not.
You can't risk revealing the secret identity.

I buy most of my games online, don't talk too much about my hobbies unless I've gotten to know the person.
Honestly, a lot of us don't want to be found. :p
Can you blame us?

The only reason anyone has to be upset about "Fake Geek Girls" is in situations where it's blatantly being used as a marketing strategy. "We're going to associate a pair of tits with your favorite pastimes for the express purpose of attracting you to purchase our goods and/or services".

Of course, this doesn't really happen outside of conventions (i.e. booth babes) and TV adverts, so there's no point in getting upset about it in the real world, now is there? If you see a girl who claims to be a geek, why not try talking to her about geeky stuff in hopes of having a grand old time with a member of the opposite sex instead of immediately responding with suspicion and fear?

Oh wait. It's because you're so used to being rejected and vilified by your peers that the very idea of someone who doesn't look and act like you enjoying the things you enjoy (and therefore, possibly, being able to accept YOU for who YOU are) seems impossible, so your first response is to immediately react aggressively to that person to protect yourself from being hurt by their deception.

My opinion, of course, and I'm no licensed therapist, to be sure. Still, it seems to me that concern about 'fake geek girls' has more to do with a lack of self-acceptance among geek guys than any kind of damage (real or imagined, and more probably imagined) that 'fake geek girls' could be doing to the community at large.

As trite as it may sound, if you have a firm belief in your own self-worth and the value of your interests, why wouldn't you open your arms to people who want to share those interests? If it turns out they were feigning interest for whatever reason, sure it's disappointing, and kind of sad that they would want to lie about themselves, but the mature response to those circumstances is to accept that sometimes people can be really lame, and get on with life.

When being a geek was uncool the morons who protest women being geeks were the ones getting the shit kicked out of them. All the while women in geek culture had to deal with that and "fake geek" accusation. Fight fire with fire ladies, if a guy treats you like a dick, send his dick to his head via his internals.

That being said, now everyone knows how I feel about this petty sexist bullcrap. Its supposed to be the future already.

"Nothing to prove"... Then why make a song? Why even care? There have always been people who will tell you that you don't belong here or there. And here's the apparently undiscovered truth: They will always be around.

There will be people who interact with you without caring if you're "geeky" enough. Mostly because it's a shitty label. Just about everyone has something he's passionate about. I guess one of my neighbors is a gardening and football geek.
I wouldn't put him in the geek drawer, he doesn't care about anything "traditionally" "geeky".

Then again, some People wouldn't put me in the geek drawer because i think certain "geeky" franchises should die already because they're nothing more then a dried out husk used by lazy writers to wring out a few more dollars from some "geeks" who desperately hope for something good to come out of their favorite franchise,

So maybe i'm not a geek. I never cared much about anime, tabletop or boardgames or even comics. Well, comics weren't around much in rural germany anyways.

"Geek" is yet another moronic label but nowadays people like to be called that for some reason. I never cared about the word itself, i figure i might have liked it if i didn't have the pavlov reflex of being called "geek" and then getting kicked in the shins.
I read books about sciences and played with my master system. Which was apparently to "geeky" for my disagreeable classmates.

Nowadays pretty young people wear the label i used to get stamped with and i don't belong there either.

"Geeky" is now pop culture and i never cared for pop culture because most of it is crap.
Now it's crap based on stuff people thought i would like because it's "geeky" Which meant "nonsensical convoluted bullshit" to those people back then and "geek" culture now is pretty much exactly that.

"Geek" has grown into that what my schoolyard bullies thought it always was and if nothing else i have learned to enjoy the irony of it.

"Geek" has become as vague as anything else that has been through the wringer of pop culture.
Everyone and no one is a geek, it is a flattering title and a derogatory term.

Go find some people who would interact with you and avoid those who tell you you aren't _______ enough to talk to them.

We all do this all the time.

About the people who would single out the females to avoid: Turns out some geeks are sexist. Guess that makes geeks stupid assholes.

Congratulations girls, for missing the point. People hate fakers and liars. They don't hate girls. More girls tend to do this than men, there aren't as many girls who are active in geek culture, nerds tend to be paranoid and protective, etc.

So if you sound like a fake, don't be surprised if people call you one. It's not because you're a girl.

I can blame you.
If you dont show yourselves then when you are discovered you will always be an oddity, which some may feel the need to test for authenticity. However I do appreciate that there is no Geek girl central command and that a coordinated mass effort would be impossible :p

To be honest with you I dont really know what people even mean by the term geek. Its kind of a blanket term for someone who likes films, games, comics and other similar stuff or a combination of them all. I myself wouldn't test a girl if she said she was a geek, but I would ask what she likes to see why they make her a Geek, same with men really. I think most lads these days would just be happy to know women share their interests, rather than quiz them in order to bar them entry to the 'club'.

If you lot as are as geeky as you claim. I see no reason why you would object to being quizzed in a pleasant light hearted manner. If someone asked me a difficult question like what does the end boss of Final Fantasy 4 look like? or in Marvel comics which villains real name is Max Eisenhardt (clue its an X-men character)? Then I would have a go. I'd be happy to talk about that sort of thing. If I couldn't get any right I'd just pose a counter question of equal obscurity, to prove that theres more to Geekdom than my interrogator has experienced.

Well, sorry you feel that way. More and more women are coming around anyway, so we are less of an oddity, but if anything, the Inquisition is louder than ever for me. Probably BECAUSE of the new female interest.

Yes, geek is a blanket term.

And I don't object to talking in a lighthearted manner. But it's never in a lighthearted manner. It's in a semi-hostile `you're just faking it` manner. And you do tolerate it, at first.
Until it gets annoying.
And you look around at all your guy friends getting an instant pass. Your less nerdy friends, your less skilled friends. Just cause they're guys. Fuck that.
Some guy wants to judge me, I'm judging him right the fuck back for being so insecure.

I will never understand why this is a thing at all.
Neither will I...neither will I. I mean, in all honestly, people faking something to be popular or "in" isn't really anything new...or even interesting for that matter. Why the world latched onto girls and their questionable love for all things "geek" related, I will never know.

It just seems like another pointless thing people spend too much time complaining about.

Hmmm... yeah, like fair enough on the whole thing... it's not good for genuine "geek girls" if they have to put up with apprehensiveness and an air of impenetrability and suspicion due to the "fake geek girl" phenomenon... but obviously those can and do exist.

Isn't it thus fair for people to be on their guard if they feel they might be "used" (or whatever) and taken advantage of (or just deceived, w/e) if they trust people?

Hell, "geek culture" or whatever is elitist and unfriendly enough to begin with. You know, like how hard gamers are on people who claim to be gamers and view them with an air of suspicion and presume them to be "casuals" until they give them enough legitimate reasons to be risen to the status of "proper" gamer in their eyes.

I mean, no one would ever criticize women for being prejudiced and defensive towards men. Naturally, all men should be assumed to be rapists until proven otherwise and this is perfectly justifiable, understandable and not offensive at all.

Yes, but that it doesn't exist for men, too, is why it's worrying. Or is there "fake geek men" we have to watch out for, too? And if there are - why don't people gun for them, too? It's probably cos most of the people shouting out against "fake geek girls" are insecure little straight fellas, eh.
Yeah but in general for humans, men have and always have had to compete with other men a lot more than women have had to compete with other women. Hence why men have to work harder to attract significant amounts of female attention than vice versa.

And nobody ever worries that bad things affecting men don't exist for women too ;)

I wanted to finish the music video, but they really need to get some actual musicians to compose and perform the song next time. I just couldn't listen anymore.

I'm not sure why you are sorry but as I have said I have yet to meet any Geek women in Cardiff, its not an opinion I hold its just a fact I haven't met any.

But any way fank yoo for your insight.

I am going to go with there is no such thing as Fake geek girls at least in the context what "fake geek girls" are suppose to be. Reading through this thread only one person has been able to provide a story of a "fake geek girl" with is friend being taken advantage of, but in the context of the whole "fake geek girl" thing it is not an example of a "fake geek girl". The reason being is a "fake geek girl" is considered to be a woman who is not a geek pretending to be a geek for popularity reasons which the two women in that story were not doing. They were simply being con artists simply taken advantage of a guy who was a nerd. The rest of the evidence people have seemed to put forward have consisted of their being hot woman that show off their breasts online while playing games. Guess what that is not proof of those woman being fake "geeks". News flash just because the stereotypical geek/nerd is a socially awkward person does not mean all geeks/nerds are socially awkward. You can be a geek and be an attention seeking and/or exhibitionist person. Hell the Escapist had a video series about women that would be considered exhibitionist if you remember, staring some porn stars and strippers that were nerds.

Someone should put the phrase "There are no FAKE geeks only REAL jerks!" on a t-shirt.

I'm lucky to be the proud uncle to 6 girls who love comics, sci-fi, anime and videogames.
And I happily feed their habits!
If you go to the Doubleclicks website they have t-shirts that say that for sale
