Wow, I guess the 360 was just a fluke .
I have my many problems with microsoft, but I would not undermine their past efforts during the OG Xbox and 360 era. More so the latter. Especially when they gave a damn at some point. It was more than just a fluke. They knew what to do, but they got too arrogant and greedy at the start of the 8th generation.

The whole "got lucky", every time a console succeeds has always been made by people who has an axe to grind to whatever competitive console or company they didn't like. Relax, I'm not accusing you of that, but something i've noticed around the PS2 era. Not to say luck isn't a factor but it takes skill and adaptability. The later Xbox consoles failed, because Microsoft chose not to adapt and force a way of life nobody was asking for nor wanted.

I think Sony forgot to do due diligence and fell for a sales pitch from Bungie about how "we're practically the progenitor of the live-service game, so obviously we're worth a bunch" while Bungie was basically burning money.
Watch them still double down on live service game.

To be fair, did anyone expect Bungie to fall off this hard this fast?
Neither did I, but you can blame that Bungie exect, Phil, who spent all that money needed for funding on some damn car collection for not helping anybody at all. Even Sony didn't benefit from it. Fuck that guy.

The 360 filled the vacuum that the ps3's early failure left, but eventually even that console came up ahead cause of longevity and exclusives. Thing is, sony learned from their mistake moving forward, while MS doubled down on theirs with x1 so here we are.

The funny thing about the 360 is that Microsoft rushed it to market to beat out the PS3 and those consoles weren't calebrated properly so you had a ton of them fail with the red ring of death, often times forcing people to buy another 360 which artifically inflated the 360 sales numbers as many of those first gen systems needed to be replaced.

Sony did learn from the mistake of having a crazy system architecture, and fixed that with the Ps4 for sure. I think publishers pushed for more parody between porting games between console versions, and Sony understood that a system with no games is useless. Which ironically is a lesson that MS is struggling to learn now. What i dont understand about the whole thing is how MS can buy up all these studios and have nothing to show for it. I can only think of 4 games in this generation that MS managed to get their studios to release.

Starfield - which sucks
Oblivion 4 Remaster - doesn't suck but it's just a remaster.
Hi Fi rush - great game, fuck the studio let's disband it apparently.
Halo Infinite - which also sucks.

So...I don't understand...what's MS's plan here. Scalebound was the coolest thing they've revealed in ages and ended up canceling it.

My two cents is that they want to create a multi-media hardware; Kinda like what Xb1 was initially marketed to be, except this time they are doubling, tripling, and quadrupling down.

At the same time, reduce resources on in-house game development, and just rely on game pass w/ all of the third-party games.

Contrast to what Valve announced first, which seems to put games first, multi-media second.

Guerilla Games, in collab with NC soft, is working on a Horizon MMO. Looks alright, just more of your standard Horizon gameplay. Although MMO is something that I personally loathe nowadays

Apparently Sony isn't working on this at all. Maybe this is the reason why they are suing Tencent? I didn't realize Guerrilla Games had the rights to produce their games with other publishers

Guerilla Games is part of Sony. The current CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment is the studio head of Guerilla Games.

I enjoyed Horizon's gameplay loop, but I'm not sure if I'd like it with the infinite grind loop of an MMO attached to it...

Gave my PS4 Pro to my daughter who moved out and wept about it a little bit. Seemed the right thing to do as I have a PS5 now. Very late to the PS5 as there seemed little reason to move on from PS4. Now? More I play the PS5, the more I'm coming to appreciate it.
And then, PS+ Essentials. A game might be available for PS4, but if you are on a PS5 and there is both a 4 and 5 version? The 4 was unavailable to me! I was doing so as I could put a playable PS4 game on the USB 3 extended drive while PS5 needs the SSD. They're really starting to phase it out. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/PR50ku-TnY8
