If that Tides of Annihilation trailer didn't have Jennifer English's voice a.k.a. Shadowheart in it I probably wouldn't have given a damn. Weird how just hearing her voice made me perk up and take interest.

Does this glut of incredibly flashy cool games amount to anything too memorable though? Because it feels like just a whole bunch of dangly keys with little that actually stays with people. These games kinda blend together with little to no identity. That's just from what I've seen though maybe I'm totally wrong.

Idk what you're talking about. Game doesn't look to have the same combat like DMC. Seems more to be of a "stand/persona" type of action game like Bayo 3, where you fight summoning multiple NPCs with different commands. Plus as far as seen in the trailer, there's no "perfect dodge/parry" mechanic that kinda just says "lmao, screw neutral and positioning! Parry season!"

Kinda can't really pinpoint to how it'll play, but it looks promising. Comes from a fairly new studio too, so hopefully some new ideas to flourish things out.

Still early, but I am seeing influences from both Devil May Cry, Bayonetta (3), and Shadow of the Colossus. More so the latter two, and going by the previews so far, the studio is promising large scale bosses.

Looks pretty DMC to me, and there's a parry mechanic as well it seems. But that's not even what I'm talking about. It's mostly these AAA games coming out of Korea and China that throw a lot of big flashy stuff on screen, but have little to differentiate themselves from eachother. I mean, other than that this game features a woman is there anything that feels different from Lost Soul Aside, which was shown in this same State of Play? Or Stellar Blade?

Japan has its flashy games with DMC and Bayo, even some of the Final Fantasy games, but there's a bit more restraint making the style of those games actually shine through and settle in your mind.

Also, in this gameplay video for Tides I was already having a bit of trouble noticing the enemies next to the phantom minions during combat.

Black Myth Wukong is pretty restrained in its presentation, giving you a simple wooden staff to fight enemies that mostly don't fill the screen with particle effects, at least in the amount of it that I've played. And it doesn't even have a parry mechanic that I know of; your defensive options are 'dodge' or 'dodge harder'. (Staff spinning only works on certain small projectiles.)

Well if you're talking art direction, it doesn't really set itself apart from its peers, which may or may not come from China/Korea (which, apparently in those regions, the of 'dollish' and "griddy martial arts' aesthetics/designs are more popular than most other artstyles. But that's WHOLE can of worms and subjectivity that I'm not gonna get into.)

Gameplay wise, it definitely seems like you have way more freedom to style on enemies like in DMC. The summoming spirits with their different moves are basically just style switching.

I will say though, I think you have a point when it comes to the main characters of these games. Not them being females, but moreso them just being, well... not all that memorable much outside of "fanart." Idk what it is, but it's also ironically funny that Korean and Chinese developers come up with some of the most well known character designs in these garbage gacha games, but mostly seem to never bring that level of memorability to a AAA release. Some rare exceptions like Sun Wu-Kong or even more lowkey titles like Mecha Break, which barely have any human characters at all. Lol

The King Arthur/Knights of the Round aesthetic in a post apocalypse world for one. Two, Gwendolyn's ass is not constantly shoved into the camera, nor the major the focus. Three: She at least has a personality over what her face in SB. I am actually hyped for both of these games. At least Lost Soul comes out this year...finally!

'dodge' or 'dodge harder'.

For the record, this is a Chinese studio, but they are made up of different people from different gaming companies and regions. Though they are backed by Tencent.

Eclipse Glow Games is a new studio based in Chengdu, China, supported by investment from Chinese megacorp Tencent. Eclipse Glow is made up of over 100 developers with previous experience creating games for franchises including Yakuza, For Honor, Assassin’s Creed, Persona, and Prince of Persia.

I am interested. This game is basically Chaos Legion 4 (or 5?) and Astral Chain 3 for me.

TLDR: PC spending up but 3rd party spending down. PC users spend on average less than $4. Cute how in the mythic lineup of top games by spending/engagement they put Fortnite last, as if it's not 3/4 of their PC revenue and most definitely the only reason the store even still exists

Avowed reviews are here

So it looks like it's a very much an Obsidian-RPG; gameplay mechanics that are found in just about every other RP games, but enough unique elements to stand out.

The art style does stand out, and apparently that's a point of contention; Some love it, while others aren't impressed. During character creation, you have an option to add "godlike" feature, which are these weird colorful funguses growing around your face. You have option to hide it during dialogs.

Character builds can be fun and very experimental to fit your style, but at the same time they all seem to go for "hit harder and bigger damage number" type. I think this can't be avoided in a singleplayer RPGs, since it kinda falls on you to save the world.

The narrative and plot seem to be something everyone is happy about, as this is one of those lore-rich, dialog and text-heavy games. Pillars of Eternity fans are loving it

However, some are also pointing out the technical and brokenness of the game at launch.

I kinda have to agree with ACG here; It looks cool enough, but not enough for me to lose my mind over. Too many other games that I am far more interested

In case we got any SNK or fighter fans here, the upcoming Garou City of the Wolves will have a 4 day open beta with 8 chars starting Feb 20!

They don't have my main Gatou but they have Kain and Mai so I will be ok. Also they announced the dlc chars which are included with the base game purchase, it's Andy Joe Ken and Chun and Mr. Big! Andy is my KoF main so I'm eating good here.
