Statement from Sandfall:
So let me get this straight; your legal team, without talking about this with the rest of the leadership figures or stakeholders, attempted the lawsuit all on their own initiative?
Either you guys have a legal team that is shady af, leaderships who suck at their jobs and not recognizing what was happening sooner, or you guys knew about the whole time, didn't expect the backlash, and now are lying. Which is it?
After looking a little more into this, it wasn't a lawsuit. The lawyer sent a cease and desist.
And a mere cease and desist, while still scary to be on the receiving end off as an artist, is not something that would require permission from management. That's just a trademark lawyer's job. They have boiler plate letters for that, it's like 5 minutes of work to send out.
The fault here is that the lawyer didn't do their due diligence and probaby jumped the gun based on that comic including clair obscur in its title.
Which Sandfall management recognized and rectified, and hopefully also made that lawyer take a crash course into what their IP actually entails.
It's absolutely embarrassing for Sandfall, and some dumb shit that shouldn't have happened, but overall not that big a deal.
