hacking the apple iphone and ps3 to me is kinda dumb because you open the market for black market apps. This cause companies to lose money and they start attacking everyone(customer and hackers in equal force) so we all suffer because of his actions.
The companies don't actually lose money, at least not in any quantifiable amount.

If they did, you'd see a relatively higher sale of the same game on PS3 than the 360 (relative to owners / per capita).

When companies over-react (attacking everyone), they are to blame for their own actions.

At least we finally have an explanation to why every single photo we get of him looks worse than the last.

Still, George Hotz isn't a bad guy. That Norwegian gunman and Hitler didn't believe they were doing anything wrong either.

*leans back in chair*

I await everyone's counter-arguments.
What counter-argument? You just invoked Goodwin's Law - no one will take you seriously now.

GeoHot Was High When He Posted PS3 Hack

The famous hacker offers a few dirty secrets from his past.

fair share of weed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/tags/geohot?] and popped a few pills.

"I'm the complete opposite of Anonymous," he told The New Yorker. "I'm George Hotz. Everything I do is aboveboard, everything I do is legit."

When Anonymous began #OpSony to fight for Hotz's rights, he was just worried that the Japanese would think he was somehow involved. "I hope to God Sony doesn't think this is me," he thought.

After the lawsuit between Hotz and Sony was settled [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109150-GeoHot-and-Sony-Settle-PS3-Jailbreak-Case], he was even invited to Sony's offices to divulge his methods for rendering the PS3 under his control. "If there were going to be lawyers there," he said, "I was going to be the biggest asshole ever." But the Sony engineering guys were "respectful" and just wanted to learn from him.

The picture that Hotz paints as a "white-hat" hacker or one that operates within his legal rights doesn't exactly jive with some of his behavior.

For example, while running a red light near his residence in Palo Alto, CA, he said. "Fuck these assholes. Stupidest red light ever. It makes no sense at all. I live by morals, I don't live by laws. Laws are something made by assholes."

He also has made his drug use pretty clear. Before a photo shoot celebrating Hotz's victory at the International Science and Engineering Fair in 2007, he admitted to smoking marijuana. "My eyes are bloodshot" in the photo, he said. "It's great."

Drug use also contributed to the public release of the PS3's master key. Hotz said he had taken Vicodin and OxyContin that day which may have made him a little freer with his hacking knowledge. "You just feel good about everything," Hotz remembered.

Still, George Hotz isn't a bad guy. He honestly doesn't believe he is doing anything wrong by hacking computers, phones or gaming consoles, even though major corporations like Sony and Apple may think differently. "This is the struggle of our generation, the struggle between control of information and freedom of information."

In that struggle, GeoHot fights to keep it all free.

I honestly can't think of any reason why this was reported on. What exactly was your motivation for this news?

and THATS the problem..some jerk thinks he's smarter than "the systm" and somone will end up hit by a car...dress it up all you want running a red light is running a red light...no matter how "justified" you feel
I'm the kind of person that stands at a crossing and waits for the light to tell me I can walk across, even if the street is entirely empty and I'm the only person there (call me crazy), but I don't think he was saying "hey, I just drove through this red light in the middle of rush hour." What I got from it was him ignoring a red light because there was no cars or people anywhere in the area.

Not a good idea to pick and choose when to obey traffic lights, but I'm just sayin' I don't think it's as bad as it sounds.

Meh. This story isn't really necessary. I already knew he was a giant asshole and douche. All this story was trying to tell me is that he's an ever bigger asshole and douche. I think the guy needs to be bent over by the law or at least stop using his own self righteous claims as a defense but that's just me.

And in the latest news: rebellious teenagers drink alcohol.

I wouldn't exactly call GeoHot Robinhood...Neither would I quote his pseudo-philosophy. Still, if he's willing to make fun and poke at the money grabbers I'm not going to get in his way.
That's funny. Because when I read the article, I was like, I'm using that shit.

"I live by morals, I don't live by laws. Laws are something made by assholes."-Geohot
Fine, go ahead.

There's a strong connection between morality (means) and law (end). If you are living by morals then you are clearly, to an large extent living by laws. Morality is a law in itself. Even so, this article clearly shows that he can't even live by morals.

Again, no mean to disrespect GeoHot but he's just a fucking teenager. He's going to say shit that makes him seem oh so cool and rebellious.

Sigh... No... no he's not.

I'd actually never heard this guy's name until right now.

He will never be anything like, say, Mitnick.
This. I mean, Mitnick even had a film made about him, hes released various books and hes pretty iconic. Geo is a clever guy, if not bit of a gibbon, but I wouldn't say hes the most recognisable hacker name in the world.

I can see where the "most recognisable hacker name in the world" viewpoint comes from. There were a couple of weeks last year where geohot was being reported on almost every day and people who were looking into why the psn was down no doubt came across his name. This made many people aware of him when normally they wouldn't have been.

[sub]As a person who doesn't look into hacker related news unless it affects me, I've never heard of Mitnick.[/sub]

And yeah, how about that money people paid you in order to fight that lawsuit with Sony back when they were suing you and not anyone saw a penny for it after you fkeed to South America?

The guy's a genius, I'll give him that, but that doesn't mean I still can't be bitter about him.

I want to see him in a PSA like that old "This is your brain" Egg. "This is your brain on drugs" smash egg.

Now can we stop with the whole doing drugs is for stupid people? I mean if you go into any university it's pretty quickly disproven anyway. Can't we just say sometimes idiots like drugs and sometimes geniuses like drugs too.
There was a survey a few years ago among videogame developers, programmers especially, and a massive percentage of them smoke dope... like 40% - which in any career besides gangster rap, is a pretty huge percentage. Not trying to sell it here! - but it can be difficult for programmers to wind down, and smoking probably helps with that quite a lot.

It's par the course for a lot of programmers just like it is with other creative industries, people shouldn't assume anything about dope smokers, because they probably had a hand in creating your favorite games, favorite music, favorite movies, books, anything that benefits from creative freedom really.

Sarcasm? If it's sarcasm, I salute you, sir, but it's hard to tell in writing... If this on the other hand is to imply that one isn't a bad person if he just firmly believes he's doing nothing wrong, well, then we'll have to agree to disagree.

Not sure what to make of the dude himself, tho - I think if he's planning to off himself by means of precription-grade painkillers, it's probably his business. Wouldn't consider someone like that a "hero" of our generation. Also not rolemodel material.

If my eyes could roll any harder, they'd shoot into the back of my head and I'd be permanently blind.

GeoHot isn't a hero - nor should he be treated as such.
