The problem isn't the design, it's that they look really cheap, like they got them out of a party store. That first photo release of the cast all lined up and geared up made them look like a bunch of cosplayers. That was a really bad first impression right there.
Winston is supposed to be kind of a joke/audience insert character. The whole joke is that Ray, Peter, and Egon are so overworked and exhausted, that they just hire the first person who applies. They don't care that they're letting some random guy work with highly advanced and dangerous laser equipement, they just want to get some proper sleep.His fist line in the film is "If there's a paycheck in it, I'll believe anything you say." which says a lot of the character but honestly, he's not as characterized as well as the rest of the characters. And having just some random guy join the team isn't such a bad thing, it's just I feel like...well he wasn't much to begin with. I believe Ernie Hudson did well in the role and it works in the movie, but I still feel like his character got miffed. And I'm worried yet wouldn't be surprised if this character ended up the same.
