No one is sitting around like "Oh boy I wish I was a scientist on a WaylandYutani mission that finds proto-Xenomorphs." but plenty are sitting around wishing to be a magic space wizard with a laser sword.
Funny story, I actually knew a girl who wanted to be one of those WY scientists. She'd be one of the ones that survived a Xeno outbreak on one of the colonies and becomes "bad ass" and shit. I believe I was in middle school at the time. She would find that preferable over the space wizards surprisingly.

I mean I'd LOVE to be on a deep space exploration mission like in the Alien universe. I wouldn't want it to be the Alien universe itself, because that entire setup is hostile to all humans in a population larger than 1. But yeah pretty much any scifi story, with interstellar exploration, FTL (or equivalent way of surviving long trips), has got a fundamental buyin from Little Happyninja in kid form, and adult form really. They lose me at the "and then everyone got their entrails ripped out" bit.

That's probably because the Saturday Night Live thing happened 30 years ago.
And yet, she remains blacklisted. Same with Sandra Locke. Another name that never gets brought up. In fact, let's make a comparison. Sinead O'Conner criticized the Catholic church and was proven right. She's still blacklisted. Sandra Locke's only crime was having a falling out with Clint Eastwood, yet we're all very quick to forgive and forget what he did to her. Gina Corano claimed to have it as bad as Jews during the Holocaust on social media because people told her to wear a mask and that trans women are women and Disney decided that was bad for their brand and PR so they fired her from The Mandalorian.

Do you see where I'm going with this?

It's not JUST that Sinead was weird on SNL 30 years ago. It's that she's consistently behaved in a way that isn't very "mainstream friendly" She's changed her name and adopted a new religion, dresses like a nun, or at least looked like she had on a habit in a thumbnail I saw of her in the last few years. She is fairly mentally unstable, which in itself isn't a problem, but when your crazy is in a form that isn't "oh that loveable looney" and is instead "holy shit are we going to have to call the cops?" (Kanye West for example), people don't really care to hear what you have to say, AND the media doesn't want to burn profitable airtime on a non-profitable trainwreck.

Plus I don't think she's really doing music anymore? I don't know, she was pretty much a 1 hit wonder, from an era filled with 1 hit wonders, and all of them are no longer in the spotlight.

Translation: No one gives a shit. Which is kind of my point. The outrage over cancel culture is selective and arbitrary. Especially when people are saying there's some kind of time limit on whether or not it counts.

Obvious people are going to care more about what happens now rather than what happened 30 odd years ago. They'll also have their own spheres of interest which they will focus on. That's just human nature.

I'm sure in 30 years time nobody will care that much about Gina Carano being fired by Disney. That doesn't mean it's wrong to care about it now.

If it's not going to matter then it doesn't matter. Why get riled about something that isn't going to matter.

Gina Carano is going to make conservative victim porn for thirty years, constantly slagging off the people that she complains won't subsequently give her a job.

That you believe you wield such power is almost charming. But please, do tell me more about how Gina Corano's actions as a celebrity were simple, harmless and trivial. I mean, if someone being a science-denying bigot who never apologizes when called out is a "dumbass reason" to no longer want to support that someone, then how much can you really disagree with them?

And you've elected to waste your time pretending that a thing we've always done is some new boogeyman, just like the propagandists were counting on you to. It's working. Instead of focusing on policy, you're chasing this goatfuck of a distraction.

By the way, in your list of examples of almost-but-not-really-cancelled people, you left out one who actually did get cancelled: Sinead O'Connor. She's still blacklisted in the US for her criticisms of the Catholic church, even though she's been vindicated. Funny how her name never comes up.
You do realize I despise the catholic church for its positions on science, and technology, and China. I am focusing on policy, I literally post on every thread about progressive policies like the 15 dollar min wage, public option because it's a gateway to m4a, I am also a part of multiple civic groups like Our Revolution, Justice Democrats, and Moveon.org. What groups are you a part of?

Also, 80% of Americans believe political correctness is a problem, 63% are afraid to voice political opinions. It is a policy-inhibiting problem.

Since you asked so nicely, Justice Democrats. I maintain however that dancing to the right wing tune about cancel culture is a distraction and you're falling for it.

Also, 80% of Americans believe political correctness is a problem, 63% are afraid to voice political opinions. It is a policy-inhibiting problem.
So 80% of Americans are stupid. Tell me something I don't know. And do you think those 63% are more afraid of a left-wing mob blocking them on social media or some wingnut with a gun deciding to make things violent? I'm cautious about where I express my political opinions specifically because the people who disagree with me are spoiling for a fight most of the time.

Why is it an issue now?
I think it's harmful for popular culture to let a small group of lunatics on social media have this power. It's not great for creativity if people are too scared to express their opinions. Think of the YA books that have been cancelled before release, for example.

And it's not just culture either, Jeremy Corbyn's downfall was in part due to weaponised accusations of antisemitism. Cancel culture doesn't just affect celebrities with conservative opinions.

Most of the things happening today aren't going to matter that much to another generation 30 years down the line. That's life. Doesn't mean that people around today shouldn't care about these things.

You're gonna have to name them, because I don't read YA fiction.

Again, you're just attaching a scary name to something we've always done. It would be far more productive to improve education so our population isn't so goddamn illiterate, media or otherwise.

Except that's not what she said at all........... It's what people have chosen to read into what she said but you won't find tweets or posts saying anything of the sort from her.

Or people barely know who the hell they are at this point to begin with

I know of at least one just cause of the stir it caused.
Amélie Wen Zhao's novel, Blood Heir

This is the same industry where women and/or people with non-"white" names frequently adopt pseudonyms to get published, right?
This has been a thing for approximately forever, it's just a big deal now that the *wrong* people are having their opinions considered.
And it's not just culture either, Jeremy Corbyn's downfall was in part due to weaponised accusations of antisemitism. Cancel culture doesn't just affect celebrities with conservative opinions.
Corbyn's downfall wasn't done by "a small group of lunatics on social media", that was done by vast media conglomerates running around the clock.
The same kind of vast media conglomerates that have been rushing to get Carano's "side of the story" for weeks now.

If "Cancel Culture" merely took a small group of lunatics on social media, we wouldn't have to cancel Joss Whedon every fucking year forever.

Yes, although had he and his team not been so flagrantly amateurish about dealing with it (as they were amateur about so many other things), it wouldn't have been so bad. I mean, in the USA, AOC is super-progressive, but comes across as laser-sharp politically as well. Corbyn and team team had the air of people striving to win a student union presidency, not national leadership.

Corbyn will end up burning the Labour Party for years. Millions of voters have lost faith in Labour, because they don't trust a party that could install someone so manifestly unfit. He's still got a big chunk of middle class progressives singing his praises and fighting the good fight, but he's shattered the party in what should be its working class heartlands.

And this is the mess Starmer has had to pick up, a party with no credibility: considered weak, unpatriotic, impractical, extreme. I suspect Starmer is a cautious leader anyway, but even if he did harbour ambitions of adventurousness, the parlous reputation of the party demands the steadiest of hands on the tiller.

It's now more genre specific than anything in the world of books but YA tends to have a lot of female authors now. I mean A LOT. Also quite a number of POC authors too from what I understand.

I mean it wasn't even that the really sunk him. I mean his party has been all for weaponised accusations for years. What sunk him was a number of senior figures in his own party working to stab him in the back. Don't believe me? They literally ran two sets of election ads and used facebooks targeting system to make it so the adverts Corbyn wanted were only shown to Corbyn and his inner cicrle while the adverts the other non Corbyn supporting figures wanted were shown to everyone else including the general public.

What also sunk Corbyn more were the numerous cases of lets say him showing sympathy for the enemies of the state while at the same time not being willing to try and act equally nice toward others from supposed allies of the UK.

E.G. Corbyn is the person who opposed Trump being allowed a state visit but wanted Hamas leaders to get one.

If "Cancel Culture" merely took a small group of lunatics on social media, we wouldn't have to cancel Joss Whedon every fucking year forever.
I mean I think this time it's sticking because this is more than people just mad at the Black Widow stuff (which is part of why he apparently was removed by Disney from Marvel).

AOC being laser focussed is kind of a joke considering her mounting series of gaffs.
She's only laser focussed if you don't peek behind the curtain and see that the laser is just an LED light being shone though artificial smoke.

On most principals I think she's right most of the time. I think her execution comes up quite short of her idealistic positioning.

E.G.s of her gaffs:

Lying about what school she went to and where she grew up. She positions herself as a Bronx girl. She actually isn't and grew up in a fairly affluent neighbourhood going to a middle to upper middle class school.

Her Kids in cages photoshoot where she was presented as yelling through the fend to people running the border camps detaining people. In reality she was yelling into an empty car park not at all to do with the facilities. It was a staged shoot.

Her green new deal hoody being one of the items in her store made with oil products while others in her range are cloths and non oil product stuff.

Her whole "I was nearly murdered and in fear for my life" thing when she was in an entirely different building across the street from the riots.

The Alien EU where Skynet tried to weaponise the Xenomorphs while Ripley became the leader of the Predators.

But yeh the Alien EU really is messed up, I mean I think the Alien Vs Predator movies did a good deal of the heavy damage there with the whole Aliens were on Earth all along because Predators thing.
I don't think the AvP movies are really at fault here.

I can't say exactly when the Alien EU started to become incongruent with the movies, but it goes at least as far back as when Dark Horse did their own sequel to Aliens, then Alien 3 happened, so they had to change Newt to "Billie," Hicks to "Wicks," and I think Ripley was an android at some point. So, yes, some Alien EU material fits better than others (e.g. Alien: Isolation), but that can change at any time. And part of the problem is that Aliens establishes that nothing like the xenomorph was ever seen before, and Resurrection states that Ripley wiped the xenomorphs out. The EU's bent over backwards to accomodate how common xenomorphs are, but there's a limit to how long you can do the thing before it becomes trite.

So, xenomorphs brought to Earth by yautja? That isn't really out of bounds. If anything, Prometheus is more at fault, since it kind of establishes that David is the one who created the xenomorphs (yet it also shows a xenomorph mural, so...)

Like I said, it's a mess.
