Girl Gamer's Opinion

This is sort of a random thought I had that I'm having trouble letting go, so I'll jot it down here.

Could it be that the fact that strongly sexualized women (portrayed in a manner that leaves no possible doubts about their gender) in video games (and media in general, but let's stay on topic) are such a hot topic, because there is still a feeling of fear connected with a woman who takes an active interest in sex?
It's an age-old practice to try and control the urges of women because supposedly, they are stronger and more chaotic than men's (please don't mistake this for my personal opinion). Religion in particular has been a strong supporter of this idea, and some still practice it today. Are we just repeating old patterns and lashing out at something we subconciously fear, because it has been portrayed as such for so long?

I dislike the word 'girl gamer'.
I don't go around announcing that I'm a male gamer.
Either you're a gamer, or you're not.
I think the word 'girl gamer' is sexist towards males, why not just say that you're a 'gamer' like everyone else?
Why does the 'Girl' part have to be so important, it's the part that makes me lose the respect for the likes of you.

I'm okay with a girl announcing that she's a gamer, but it's just fucking insulting when she has to point out that she's a 'girl gamer' and that she can beat male gamers.
Good for you, so can I, so what?

Quoted for truth. It's all about this seperation that I lightly covered in a previous thread to do with 'female gamers'. The women are creating a problem out of nothing, the "media" of course plays a vital role in this but it seems the only people taking notice are the females themselves, they clearly want to play games, but they also want everyone to know about it, they can't just shut the hell up and play.

It's not just with video games though, gender seperation is a "big deal" in almost everything. Christ I even remember reading a news article about a female bin lady, and the entire article revolved around her just being a female, and proving that "women can do it too" and she received all sorts of praise for it. And you can bet your bottom dollar that other females read that article and thought "aww, yeah good for you hun". Now this example I admit to be purely media related, but it starts a chain of events that somehow ends up in more women participating in male dominated areas, and making damn sure the world knows about it too. The latter point is the only bit that pisses me off. By all means do whatever the hell you want with your lives, like everybody else on this planet you do have that right but please STOP CRAVING ALL THIS FREAKIN' ATTENTION FOR IT.

This is getting stupid, everything has already been said.

I get your point, and I agree that I have to get used to it, but it still bothers me. I might have exaggerated it a little in my writing, but, for me, the whole point in video games is to pretend to be something your not, so you can kind of... escape I guess. I just don't want that person on the screen to be something that's... well... you get the idea.

A well thought out argument.
I agree with you to a point. Except that I've seen strong female leads (Lara Croft isn't far off) that are sexy. Sure the example I've given leans a little too heavily on the top heavy art style of women in gaming. But she is strong.

I think if they just made stronger female characters without over playing them as sex objects or just romantic story arcs it would be much better. And only takes good writing to be achievable.

It's unfortunate that none of the cavemen here will be able to comprehend your post well enough to provide a worthwhile reply...But that is life, I suppose :[
I'm sorry you had experience with people on this forum that gives a negative view of men. But saying that they are cave men is just a cheap shot and not a constructive argument in itself. Maybe try again?

I think all of this came about when women were first getting into gaming in a way that men have assumed is male only. Because of this there was a need to band together to even have a enjoyable experience due to the hositlness that the area used to be. I mean hell it wasn't like WoW back in the early days of EQ or the first days of Quake-cons and such. Why I think back then there was almost sort of a club of being female and a gamer same way you hear terms for female workers at some auto shops. Not out of disrespect but as more of a banding of sorts along a male environment same thing happened with women during WW2 who worked at factory's they all had a unique name depending what factory they worked at being female its no different.

Plus if you want to ask if it is reasonable look at some of the replys in this thread from clearly bitter men. Who generalize women much like you have generalized by saying all women say they are "girl gamers". So infact your part of the problem by just thinking all women do it and only for attention at that.

And to appeal to that, here's another argument about Sex and Games.

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=oFywW99Uvwc

May not be exactly on the topic of Woman and video games but I still think it holds up a fair argument.

As a female myself I have to say I think that you're looking in the wrong place for sexism.

On the subject of Soul Calibur... I can't think of another way to say this... GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF IVY'S CHEST! Sheesh, I know their big and not looking at them isn't really an option in combat but you can stop thinking about them later. Big breasted women can fight too, albeit with slightly more difficulty. She does have a vague personality, all of the Soul Calibur charaters do. Look at the other characters, there is a (quite small but still there) variety of body shapes and outfits, male and female.

Now look at Nintendo. The only female character I can think of that doesn't make me groan is Samus. Even trying to think about Princess Peach makes me want to scream. Or buy her a gun so she can just blast Bowser's face off next time he trys to kidnap her. She completely sucks in SSBB. Also look at Nintendo's line of 'girl' games. Learn how to be a fashion designer! Learn how to be in a girl band! Become a teacher! Look after some babies! Looking after frickin' babies! What's more sexist than that?

So, there's my rant.

Aye I've seen various adverts floating around now to do with "all girl" games, and it makes me cringe every time. This is what it's coming to, from every "female gamer" who feels as though she is somehow exlcuded from doing something that anybody can do, the "market" then opens its doors because it thinks there's room for profit there, and there is... but not from the females doing the complaining, they'll cringe just as much as I do.

Perhaps this is how the equilibrium will finally come about... as both males and females come together and banish the "be in a girl band" games, and we will all rejoice in victory as we push them out of the market and agree that the enemy we know is far better than the one we don't.

Or, hundreds and thousands of mothers will buy the games for their daughters and the profits will continue to grow.

The problem is, so many female gamers protest at games like that and then mention how they want "games that appeal to the female demographic". I've already explained how the only demographic a game should be marketed to is the demographic of "people who would like to play this game".

Actually, Peach is medium to high tier because in capable hands she's much much harder to knock off the arena than the rest of the cast (even more so in SSBM, so she makes it almost top tier there). Samus is actually much worse off than Peach in that game.

Also look at Nintendo's line of 'girl' games. Learn how to be a fashion designer! Learn how to be in a girl band! Become a teacher! Look after some babies! Looking after frickin' babies! What's more sexist than that?
Those games aren't actually done by Nintendo as such (if you mean the Imagine series), but by Ubisoft. They just happen to be on a Nintendo console. Direct your hate towards the Frenchies, rather.

This is why "gaming girls" annoy me. They're so goddamn sensitive.

The "women" (I put quotes there because I'm sure at least 70% of them are guys) on these forums have been making new topics to complain about this same stuff every week or so. Guys like big boobs-- get over it. You don't see me complaining when my character in Age of Conan wears a loincloth for the first 20 levels, or when male protagonists have absurdly muscular frames. That shit's not realistic, but you don't see us flabby, pale, basement dwelling geeks throwing up rants all over the Escapist.
As a female, I agree with you. Seriously girls are too sensitive about this stuff.

It's a male-dominate industry. Get used to it. I've been playing games since I was four, and I don't expect my boyfriend to look like a big, hunky, one liner guy. If the gaming industry was female-dominated, it would be boring as effin' hell.

And besides, there's plenty of man-candy for us girls anyway.

You shouldn't whine too much about women in games, it is more of a guy thing I'll admit that, but there are some awesome females and I hope they'll be more in the future. You're right about the giant tits and wearing thongs and high heels and skimpy outfits FOR FIGHTING, ugh, I know guys like to look at that stuff but come on! How the fuck are you supposed to fight in a thong and high-heels with your tits hanging out?
I could never get me head round this either, I mean I can barely WALK in heels let alone jump about whilst kicking folk in the teeth.

I am a gamer girl as in I just so happen to be a girl who plays video games. And that's as far as it goes. I don't really care about anything else. I'm not the only one in the world and I don't see why either myself or anyone else should boast about it.
