Why exactly is this even being asked? Games are for all, so I see no problem with girls in games. We're all human, right?

I don't think this will end the threads though, more will crop up. ...though I've never had the chance to use the extra appendage joke till now <.< so maybe they're not all bad.

It's an age long problem, people will always have gender stereotypes deeprooted into their mind. You can either tolerate or berate but stuff like this will never go away.

"In the past quarter century, we exposed biases against other races and called it racism, and we exposed biases against women and called it sexism. Biases against men we call humor."

Yeah, too bad not everyone thinks so. I've had to battle against guys who condescendingly told me that "girls can't play this kind of game, it's too hard" and who doesn't even give me a break even when I whoop their asses. Why should I be worse at shooting shit than a guy, just because I have breasts and a uterus??? It actually really annoys me, and I've met this sort of prejudice one time too many.

The way I look at it there 99% of the gaming population is very tolerable and welcomes girls to play online with them, however it's the silly 1% that confuses the crap outta me. I may just be trying to hard to figure out what goes through their heads that they feel the need to belittle the female gamer. I am more than happy that a lot of you do not think lowly of girl gamers and in fact encourages them to play on.

You know, I saw this thread and thought it would be about games being designed around/marketed towards people of the female gender. I was so obviously wrong. I guess some stereotypes exist, but for the most part... not. It's amazing to see a discussion as ignorant as this in the year 2011.

As for the OP's question:
A: Yes. Female members of humanity can play games, have been for thousands of years, and will continue to do so if the game in question interests them. A game being electronic/computerized/simulated has no bearing.

I have a feeling that people are often a bit freaked out by my hobbies (LARPing, gaming, ect.)... It is probably because I look very "girly" (I always wear dresses, skirts, pink, purple ect.).. Oh well...

If its only one percent then it shouldn't be that big of a problem, chauvinistic assholes exist just like men hating feminists. Some people, of ether gender, are just jerks so you ignore them.

I'm a guy and I actually prefer those 'family friendly' games you mentioned, mostly cause they are deeper and don't have to satisfy the idiots who call games about shooting and blood 'hardcore' they are all just for different types of people and both genders have different types of people so it doesn't matter.

I don't think us girls playing games is such a new thing - I have personally played games for around 19 years now. Every week at least people ask on multiple sites why it's so different these days for girls to play games and (in my opinion) all this does is separate girls from the culture more and make it appear like it is abnormal when it is not. I know more girls play compared to back then but you could say that about guys and older people also as with more technology has brought more diversity in all genres. Games have become more socially acceptable rather than just for nerds or something.

Looks like the guys who think Video Games are serious business are gonna have to build a new Boys-Only clubhouse and call it something "awesome" like "hardcore gaming" until the girls catch up to that club as well.

Honestly, though, it just means more people to play with and hopefully more innovation on the developer's end.
They're just girls, for godsake

Eh.. Girls gamers are cool. I have yet to meet a hardcore and good one, though. And.. let's not call CoD for hardcore.. It's a pretty casual game. o_O

I am all for girls playing more "hardcore" games. Hell, the girl I like is quite a bit braver then me when it comes to the "Horror" genre. Still, I don't really understand that some guys are so sexist about girls playing FPS, MMO or any other genre. Dunno, If I had to, I'd say that these "some guys" are just too insecure, and having a girl "trotting" on "mans land" in video games, is something they can't take, and as everyone is braver behind a keyboard then in real life, they try to be "macho".

I'm a girl, and I've been playing games (all types of genres) for 13 years. Yet it's only until a few years ago that this "issue" has become so "OMG."
But I've realized that this issue is only an "issue" when playing online or posting on forums. People act differently when you can't see them.
Games should be for everyone to play. Gender, or age shouldn't matter. This whole girls and games problem is just based on the stereotypical girly girl.

I think that girls playing hardcore games is freaking awesome. I've had my ass whupped online by girls before, and by my girlfriend in real life. I left her alone with my Xbox while I went to get her something to eat(Yes I am a guy getting a girl something from the kitchen bring on the insults) and by the time I got back she had got past the part where I was stuck in Dead Space for 3 hours. Hell, I'm buying her an Xbox and a Live subscription for her birthday. Its awesome.

Sometimes i think that games designers think that only men will play their games too.

I mean, come on, how many girls willingly had sex in Fallout: New Vegas?

I really can't think of a SINGLE woman I know who would willingly go into Gormorrah and enjoy themselves.

While we're on the subject, why aren't those cutscenes voiced when the Benny one is?

That just seems lazy...

Testicles or ovaries make no difference in the type of video games you should play or enjoy. Personally, I find something very appealing about a woman kicking some ass in a war game.
