Anyone else think it's made up?
I feel like Gore just wanted attention and so he told us our atmosphere is dissolving
turns out our own planet is doing more to damage the ozone: a volcano near Alaska is producing more carbon than the whole state of new york could put out in 50 years
and by the way polar bears aren't stupid or helpless
they CAN swim and don't wait til they're stuck on some tiny ass iceberg in the middle of the ocean
and one more thing
antarctic ice sheet is the largest it's ever been
so is this actually a problem?
I'm all for the environment and being green
but should we really be freaking out?

Not real. In fact I burned a DVD of An Inconvenient Lie Truth. Just to piss off some hippies, but unfortunately they don't know. In fact most competent scientists say we are in a global cooling phase.

P.S. And by burned I mean set on fire.

and I agree with people saying we should be weaned off fossil fuels in favor of a more renewable source. I just don't think we should be demanding it happen RIGHT NOW

I'm really sorry about the avatar thing by the way. I was hoping you wouldn't get pissed. I used to read those comics and I was like hey, that's a great idea for an avatar when I saw yours. And I figured you'd never notice or really care. Unfortuneately, I am found out. And Calvin would colonize other planets as Spaceman Spiff and no one would ever worry about Earth's condition ever again. Also I'm new, so don't hate if y'all have seen this topic 80 million times

Global warming isn't BS.

We know Earth has cooler periods and warmer periods.

What is unknown at this time is what effect did us humans have to it.

Personally, I think we humans have accelerated it and using more wind- and solar energy instead of biofuels (man that was a bad idea), wood and fossil fuels would be a really good idea. Nuclear energy is necessary at the moment but perhaps in 40 to 50 years we could start to get rid of it as well.

Global warming, global cooling, whatever. It's still good reason for people to get moving and invent eco-friendly technologies.

Okay look. Volcanoes produce a lot of carbon, this is true. Its part of the reason our planet has an atmosphere. The actual human-caused part of carbon emissions is about 2% of global emissions from all sources. The thing is, its that extra 2% that is causing problems.

So for all of you that think volcanoes are a reason to stop worrying about the environment? Do some fucking research.

I honestly think its a bit sickening when people write off environmental issues because its not convenient to them. I'm not saying you necessarily are, but a lot of people just write them off so they don't have to worry about the environment and, to me, that's disgusting.

I agree, our major concern at the moment shouldnt be trying to limit our emissions, it should be trying to find renewably energy sources we can use after all the fossil fuels are gone.

And what is it with people talking only about Carbon Dioxide? Methane (also called Natural Gas) is 10x worse greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Not this again. I am officially revoking your permission to use tracer bullet. Calvin would be smarter than this.
Agreed, Search button folks.

Cows release 20% of the total amount of methane into the atmosphere annually, and 130 times MORE waste than humans. Hmmm...maybe we should kill all the cows on the planet.

Agreed. Anyone with a basic knowledge of astronomy and geology realizes that Earth experiences periods of warmth and cooling. The key question is: is mankind causing it to be worse?

The fundamental truth is: NO ONE KNOWS.

I don't care what The Goreacle says, there is no way to prove that man is causing it any more than there is proof man is not causing it.

In some places, you can see the air (smog, etc.), and that's not good. There's also beneficial reasons to begin adapting some 'green' technologies, etc.

But having said that, I am really, really sick of this green crap. Seriously, environmentalism is becoming a full-blown religion in the eyes of many, because views upon it are being shaped entirely on Faith. Faith in the fact that the world is going to hell in a handbasket because that's what people are being told so often, they accept it as truth.

On top of that, people (even scientists) who don't buy into all the GW stuff are being silenced...

Hey, I recycle for cryin' out loud, but the absolute insanity about Global Warming has got to stop...

But perhaps we should be doing something to colled that methane produced by cows and pigs and use it somehow, instead of making biodiesel. And have you recently checked figures of the estimations of how much methane gas pipeline leaks put out every year?

Priorities are needed.

The reasons for all of the things you brought up should be because of safety and well being, not for global warming. Global warming is a farce. If it actually is warming, we are not the reason. The earth has experience two ice ages before we even existed. If it's time for another one, there isn't a damn thing we can do about it.

On that we agree. But if it get's the job done and makes people actually implement changes for the better...

Ah, and this is the part we the correct answer is 'we don't know'. Earth has natural heat cycles, no one is disputing that, but we honestly don't know if we are the cause for somehow quickening or altering that cycle or making it more pronounced. WE DON'T KNOW.

So don't talk like you do - a planetary climate system is highly complex, with everything affecting everything. We can't simulate that. We can't accurately predict that beyond a few days. The weather forecast you see for the coming few weeks is a best guess. If we can't predict weather on a local scale for the week to come, how could we possibly predict golbal changes for the next decade? Or century? We can't. We can approximate, we can make broad statements and make some general predictions. That's it. And those predictions say that the CO2, methane and other greenhouse gases have some kind of effect, but we can't say how pronounced an effect or if it is even a meaningful effect. It might be catastrophic effect, for us humans. So we prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Indeed it is.

Also, plants themselves produce half the methane generated daily.

Further testing needs to be conducted before wind and solar energy is more widely adopted.

Solar energy literally robs heat from the Earth, which, if used on a mass scale, could do far more ecological damage than global warming.

Wind energy takes energy out of the wind (obviously), but what people never consider is that wind isn't infinite. If you slow down the wind by even a small amount, it will create radical atmospheric changes, most importantly promoting intense storms, such as hurricanes.

Also, your lamentation of biofuels is accurate as well; ethanol only produces 60% of the energy of gasoline, and about 30% of the energy of diesel, but (despite what they tell you) produces half as much CO2 (Is there an [ IMG] code for subscript?) for the same energy than gasoline, however it also creates a hydroxide ion, which will try to rip apart certain other molecules.

Correct.

You hear from all different sources how fast the Antarctic ice shelf is melting. There's even videos of it.

Here's what they don't tell you:

It's caused by the shift the tectonic plates. The 'side' (Being on the South Pole, it doesn't exactly have East and West) which is melting is slowly moving into warmer, more tropical waters.

However, this means that the other 'side' is getting closer to the pole, which is actually causing the ice shelf to grow faster than the other side is melting.

In essence, the ice shelf is larger than it has been in recorded history (which, due to the way ice layers, is back several thousand years), and for the time being, will only grow.

I agree.

That's why I would like to put forth the most solid proof that Global Warming is a lie:

The theory is backwards.

The theory states that Global Warming is caused by green house gasses which reflect and re-radiate heat back down to Earth.

Makes sense, except that it does more to block heat than reflect it.

100% of the Sun's energy that reaches Earth hits our outer atmosphere.

As it stands, about 30% reflects off instantly.

Through various means, about 55% makes it to the surface of the Earth.

About 15% of what makes it to the surface is immediately absorbed by the land and sea.

This means 40% is reflected back up towards the sky.

Again, due to the reflectivity, about 30% is bounced back.

Except, 30% of 40% is only 12%.

So, if we were to increase the 'reflectiveness and re-radiativeness' of the atmosphere by 50% (absolutely unfeasible, even 1 or 2% is extreme, but I'm using 50 to make the math more apparent), suddenly 45% is reflected off before entering the atmosphere.

But only 18% is reflected back.

If anything, 'greenhouses gasses' are going to bring on an ice age, not a global meltdown.

But what about the greenhouse effect?
Greenhouses are warmer than the surrounding air not due to a 'greenhouse effect', but simply because the structure creates a closed system, where only energy is exchanged, and not matter.

If you try to heat up air, it's going to take you a long time.

If you try to heat up air inside a box, it will go much quicker, because it's the same air you're constantly trying to heat, instead of the entire system shifting energy around through convection, etc.

The earth has been here for billions of years, whereas we have been here for one hundred thousand or so. Barring some nuclear halocaust, I think it's safe to say the earth know how to take care of itself.

You say "we don't know" as if there is some sort of doubt. There is no doubt about it, volcanos create more CO2 than we ever could. Weather is constantly changing. People like to put on the big "global warming" stamp on it to make dumb people throw money around. When someone says global warming is happening, and I tell them we experience -30F winters and this summer is particularly mild, people then say "oh, there is times of cooling too". Well, which is it? To someone like me, that sounds like backtracking and an attempt to cover up the fact that they have no idea what they are talking about.
