to be fair, i was being slightly hyperbolic, but knew that i'd heard of graphics cards that cost over a grand, so i googled "$1500 graphics card." i didn't realize it just came out that recently haha. kismet.

don't get me wrong, i do plenty of PC gaming, but prefer console for multi-platform titles. if money weren't an issue and i could have a 4k rig capable of running VR, with all the ram and an SSD and a terabyte of storage and not be forced to jump through hoops to get things working right sometimes, i'd be all about it. but i'd still do most of my gaming on console.

personally, i just prefer the plug and play functionality of consoles over the increasingly obtuse PC gaming scene.

in fact, perfect example. recently, my $1200 laptop (school thing) was incapable of running Minecraft.

Fucking. Minecraft.

so i googled the issue for nearly an hour to no avail. i finally found some sub topic of some shitty site where a person said to enable VBO's. no one knew what they were, i never needed to touch that setting before, but suddenly out of nowhere, a random ass issue shows up with the most obtuse of solutions.

I have never met someone that genuinely prefered playing multiplatform titles on console outside of shitty ports that were broken on PC due to developer incompetence. I have met plenty of people that pretended this to be the case to shill for consoles for one reason or another. Im not saying your one of them, but if your not your the first genuine console lover ive met.

Also you do realize terabyte of storage is tiny and very cheap? Storage costs less than 50 dollars per terabyte nowadays.

While i dont know what your laptop is, but you do realize that you just tried gaming on a laptop that very likely didnt even have dedicated GPU, right? Also given its a school thing they probably bought you and overpriced chromebook or shitty mac and paid double because of tech support deals.

Minecraft is built on Java, which is the worst language to program stuff in and should die a quick and painful death. It has issues because its programming is shit.

nope, not a shill. a dedicated fanboy perhaps, but i genuinely prefer console over PC. the hours i've put into Fallout on both systems is a testament to that.

it's a decent laptop actually, but could have built a better desktop for the same money, for sure. but i needed a laptop.

it's an HP Envy m7 Notebook (ugh, i hate that i couldn't find a non-touchscreen) running an intel i7-5500U CPU @2.40 GHz and 16 gigs of RAM. no dedicated GPU, and i understood that going in. i wasn't looking for a gaming rig when i bought this, just one for school, that could also handle a bit of gaming, and could be bought within the next 2 days before class started haha.

So you wanted a school laptop with a bit of gaming and you bought one with no dedicated GPu but with completely unnecessary oversized CPU and more RAM than youll need. I guess i can understand if the 2 days thing made options small, but that laptop is really unbalanced.

haha, trust me i'm aware of the balance issue this thing has. i didn't understand it when i saw it, but it made more sense than the one with the 4k screen with specs that didn't seem to be able to run things efficiently in 4k. it was a bizarre selection at the best buy, and had i had more time, i would have done better (i'd have gotten an alienware! haha, no.)

i'm glad you verified that for me though. i know more than the layman about PC's and PC gaming, but i'm not as informed as others, and thought there was some reason that made sense for this to be this imbalanced. the only thing i could figure was that running this touch screen required a lot of processing power or something.

so i did some digging, and apparently this came equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce 940m. what's your take on that? is that anything good? and if so, why am i consistently having to play on lower settings than seem normal?

Its not good. Its a low end mobile graphic card. Good for watching youtube, not good for playing games. For example 750 ti that can be bought for 117 dollars [http://www.amazon.com/GeForce-750Ti-GDDR5-Graphics-GTX750TI-OC-2GD5/dp/B00IB9P1KG%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAIW75JH3RVMIR6UAA%26tag%3Dhwcompare-20%26linkCode%3Dsp1%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00IB9P1KG] is two times faster. I couldnt find a 940m sold seperately outside laptop so i could not do a price comparison but its going to be more expensive if only because of its small size.

I first read that as "Are we going to build a wall out of the console immigrants?"

Which is arguably even better, because they'll of course be forced to build it too, so just imagine the demoralizing effect.

i figured as much. your post also implies that i could potentially upgrade the laptop. i've upgraded desktops before, never a laptop though. does it void warranty? how does one generally access the innards?

My link was merely for comparison. Laptop upgrades are usually limited to hard drive and RAM (altrough some do have a plug-in GPUs, but it does not look like that in your model.). To upgrade the CPU or GPU one would need to solder a different one that would match and be supported by mobo, its not something a regular user would ever do. There are however cases where external GPUs can be used. I am not very familiar with them but there are youtube instructions and whatnot. This does mean buying a seperate GPU and a need to have it plugged in with seperate power supply, so it becomes less portable.

I looked at your model and it seems that in standard model it comes with a 5400 rpm HDD? can you confirm this? If so i highly suggest you upgrade to a SSD as this would be most realistic upgrade that should be felt in performance for you. It will also help your battery last longer because SSD requires much less power than HDD.

Replacing HDD via the hdd access panels would not void warranty normally. Accessing the innards (motherboard, coolers, ect) often would. This is pretty bad since standard warranty here is 2 years and cleaning the fan, at least in my laptop, requires opening it up enough to void warranty, so that would mean 2 years without cleaning. I guess most people survive without cleaning though so it should be fine.

Opening the laptop differs slightly from model to mode (best would be to find a video of someone disassembling your model of laptop and watching it). The basics are you flip it upside down, open the panels for hard drive(s) and ram and take those off (and dont forget to take the battery off first if your model allows removal of battery) Then unscrewing the screws at the bottom which should allow lifting the bottom plate off, going any further will likely hit the warranty tapes but its basically just unscrewing a lot of screws and taking the motherboard and other chips off. Oh and yours has a CD-rom drive so it should be unscrewed and taken out before lifting the backplace.

yep, that's the one. i didn't think upgrading laptops would be quite so easy. i'd love to go ssd, but realistically, the only really affordable one for me is 250gb and that's not nearly enough. when i was putting together specs for a rig, i was originally just going to have the ssd for windows and maybe a game or so, and then a terabyte hdd for standard usage.

Just chiming in that cards like that aren't gaming cards. Those are cards for high-end workstations meant for research purposes or high-end design work.
