"I have rarely gotten great reviews... on any of my movies, apart from those by reviewers who think for themselves and make up their own opinions."
Oh God, he did not just say that!

Wait, what was wrong with The Prince of Egypt? That movie was actually good. Sure, it dangled shiny effects around, but it also had a story that it told very well. I still consider it one of if not the best screen adaptation of the story of Moses.

What I want to know is who this was made for. No seriously, which audience was this made for? Because "fantasy movie about gods in ancient times" is not a general audience targeted movie, at least not unless it's part of a series that has eased audiences in first with more grounded movies.
I like to call films like this a John Carter sequel. a film with bad writing, directing and having a large and pointless budget but somehow have some of the worst special effects you will see in theaters.

Are you thinking of a different movie then Prince of Egypt?
As I don't recall it having any special effects, an overblown budget, or being a commercial flop.
sorry about that I made a typo fixing it now

If you look at his Rotten Tomatoes page, a 'descent into mediocrity' is a quite fitting description of what you'll see. Also, apparently Dark City and The Crow were well-received by critics - even at the time they were first released - so I dunno where he's getting his idea of near-universal critical panning from.

Sounds like the guy has a persecution complex.

I actually saw this atrocity. Ask me anything!
Alright. From the trailers it looks like The Mummy crossed with Clash Of The Titans. Is that a correct assumption? Also, those two films at least achieved a decent level of popcorn-chomping escapism. What do you reckon went wrong here?
Throw in the Avengers and you have the right mix, if only for the weird CGI power armor fights.

The main things that went wrong? Pretty much everything save for the set design (which was mostly green screen, but looked decent). A few actors actually did try but the script was way too terrible to get a decent performance out of anyone. CGI was just plain awful too.

Unless you are going in expecting a laugh it is not at all worth it.

It looked awful. The critics did confirm that it was awful, but I don't think I'd be seeing this anyway.
I don't think it looks awful, it looks awfully bland. :) No real substance to the film beyond "look Gods fighting!!" CGI porn. Might be a decent popcorn flick, turn off the brain and watch the pretty animation but beyond that its got no soul. Then again the CGI didn't look all that great in trailers and there was nothing that caught my eye. Hard to believe the same guy who made two of my favorite flicks did this, but then again Ridley Scott has made some terrible flicks in recent years as well so... there's that.

I'm surprised he isn't blaming piracy as well. Why have one scapegoat when you can have two?

Plus bad mouthing critics? I'm sure that will go over well when he makes his next movie.

Oi, Proyas, d'you want some chips with that salt?

Seriously this is childish as fuck. What a pillock. Does he honestly reckon people will look at this post and go, "Oh, I agree it's definitely the critics' fault that this film was a pile of shite"?

Of course not, because everyone who sees this is thinking three words: "What a ****." He probably knows. Once he's calmed down he'll probably regret that post.

In other news: Mad Max: Fury Road, a movie with a fairly basic plot, walked away with the most Oscars last night with best Costume Design, Production Design, Make-up and Hair Styling, Film Editing, Sound Mixing, and Sound Editing (with nominations in Directing, Cinematography, and Visual Effects). The only surprise was Visual Effects, which went to Ex Machina.

In other words, here's what a good movie looks like. Gods of Egypt is what a bad movie looks like.

I admire the movie for at least trying to break the mold of Blockbuster movies, at least it looks unique compared to the constant Super-Hero movies and generic comteporary action movies like Taken, Shoot-Em-Up and London Has Fallen.

And this guy must have some big balls to speak out against Critics of all people.

He's gone full shyamalan. Never go full shyamalan.

Never the less, I have a counter theory for the good director: people are tired of CG wank without any new ideas that missed the boat of cultural relevance by... oh how long has it been since 300?
Shyamalan dissed critics?

i havent seen the movie and most likely never will. saw the trailer a few times in the cinema that i was like: WTF is this CG riddled crap?"
the trailer alone didn look anything special or had anything in there that got my interest. hearing bad things about it doesnt surprise me.
granted, some critics cannot be always be relied on. there are few movies i have liked but critics didnt like them and vice versa. but this statement is just hilarious.

I saw it and it's pretty bad. I knew it would suck, but it was even worse. The room was completely empty though, so at least i didn't have to put up with people eating and talking and texting.

This is what you get when you mix the mummy, transformers, clash of the titans, ancient aliens. The main guy's girlfriend has some nice boobs though.

I feel this could become a classic years from now.

I'm sure literally anyone who makes any content, large or small, doesn't like seeing something they made get bombed financially and get called a piece of crap. But bro, if that many people say it sucks. Maybe there is some truth to it.

Speaking of which, do critic ratings even have a noticeable effect on how well a movie performs? Transformers is destroyed by critics yet it is a Popular movie series.

People say the movie looks like shit, but honestly for me it seems 10 times more interesting than the shit that DiCaprio got an Oscar for. The Revnant is a -9/10 easily. Worst movie of the year. I don't see this being as bad. Funny how he got an Oscar for this shit but not for some of the other movies.

Also he's right about the part where reviewers bring in social politics for no other reason than to trash talk and get some bonus points while stroking their ego on how progressive they are.

Good fucking lord that's cringe-worthy. He could have made a reasonable argument about critics jumping on the bandwagon when it comes to political issues, but instead he decided to give everyone the middle finger and pull the age old excuse of "everyone is a stupid arsehole who just hates on my work for no reason, except for the people who praised me, they're thinking for themselves".

He mentioned white-washing and just decided to call people idiots rather than actually address the issue. Typical pissbaby.

It didn't look good or interesting. That is pretty much what made me see Deadpool again over this.

I did find the accusations of white-washing utterly laughable though.
