Idk about you guys, but I often feel pretty stressed out. Since booze and recreational drugs are too expensive (for me, anyway) I rely on video games to help me relax. Since I'm not the only one, I'd like to hear you guys' suggestions on what games you use to relieve stress

My personal favorites are the God of War games. Nothing gets me more relaxed than murdering the shit out of a Greek deity

Any game where I can rip a guys arms off and beat him to death with them.
Edit: Warhammer 40k: Space Marine is a really good game for relieving stress. There is just something visceral satisfying about unload a bolter into an ork squad and then going to town with a chainsword or power axe or thunder hammer.

Play Kirby's Epic yarn. That game is so damn cutesy and fun , that there is no way you can feel stressed and/or unhappy playing that . It just a high concentration of joy . I SWEAR . Every time i am in a bad mood i play that game and it cheers me right up .

The music, the aesthetics, the gameplay, EVERYTHING screams happy happy joy joy . You'll feel great .

Seriousness though I don't know.
If I need to let off stress I'm probably in a bad mood and I usually don't play games when I'm in a bad mood because I'm not paying attention and make stupid mistakes, which usually makes me more infuriated.

I actually found Journey really relaxing, especially the glowy tower level. I can feel my pulse drop and my breathing slow floating around in the place.

Awesome thread, I always wondered if anyone else thought about the stress relief games market. Geometry Wars got me through exams that I hadn't studied for, and allowed me to cram 13 weeks of knowledge into 2 days to get a credit for a second year maths course. Every time I felt burned out and built up stress that game straightened me out in about 10 minutes. I miss Bizarre so much :(

If time is not an issue then ego-shooters also make up my favourite stress killers: single player CoD, Battlefront 2, games that don't really havee an 'art' side to them and basically let you murder millions of goons.

It's so nice when other people realize that video game violence is theraputic, not stress-building or leading people to commit crimes. Anyway, sure. I would say...

Doom games
Rage
Duke Nukem games
Destroy All Humans! (1 & 2)
GTA: San Andreas
Saint's Row (2 & 3)
Fallout games (Naturally)
MDK (1 & 2)
Twisted Metal (1, 2, 4, Black, & Head-On)
Earthorm Jim games
Champions Online (It's free!)

Basically, alot of things that I'VE played that are for action.

I'd recommend 'Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP', it was a game that I found through the Humble Indie bundle and it's super relaxing.

Or, InFamous (1/2) 'cos nothin's more relaxing that climbing to the tallest building and thunder droppin' the shit out of some people.

Well, I have many weapons to kill stress if I like:

Path of Exile.
A Diablo 2 clone I play online. A very good stress-killer but only in the first Act of the game.
The second Act is a hell-hole and you need all the time to be in your toes...

Painkiller.
Quick to load a level you want and just select the level with the zombies inside the village. Using your Stake-gun at them is sssooooo satisfying.

Doom and Doom 2.
Just play the first levels of this game. Very good to kill also the stress and it have great catchy music.

Magical Drop 3.
My favourite game of all time. If you learn to play, you literally is one of the best stress-killers of all time. Defeating an enemy Ai in a matter of seconds is always something I love from this game ^^

Rayman Origin.
The most recent game I play now. Very relaxing if you are not playing for the score.

Neo Drift Out.
I have a confest to make...I HATE the simple driving games. BUT this awesome game is a HUGE exeption! Play this game!!!! PLAY THIS GAME!!!! IS SO F*CKING AWESOME!!!!

I have many other games, but I am lazy to write now.

I wish I knew, cuz I'm pretty down in the dumps lately :(

Starcraft 2....not so much lol. I've been addicted to competitive games lately, not exactly stress free....but fun because I've never really tried to be better than others at games before. Right now ive been playing mobas or SC2. Problem is I don't have enough friends for mobas and I suck balls at Starcraft. I've never played online before (usually bot battles, campaign, or custom minigames) so I played 5 matches, won 2 (no idea how) and now I'm in Silver League. -_- I think I might be kinda good at it but im so sloppy and never get the timing of anything right. I can't memorize build orders worth a shit either. I'm used to fast paced games but SC2 is a tad ridiculous in its learning curve.

I love multiplayer games....but they usually require people....and I don't have very many of those lying around.

I have three options for a game I pick up to relieve stress...

The first has been mentioned before: A game with messy(ie your mowing down enemies) combat set to a low difficulty. My personal choice for that tends to be Ratchet: Deadlocked. Nothing relieves stress like tearing through a graveyard of zombies(ROBOT zombies!) with a wrench, a pair of pistols, a giant electric flail... And a missile launcher.

The second choice is something just generally fluffy and fun, maybe something sans combat like a collection of mini-games, a simple platformer, or one of those 'objection-less' goof-off games like Electroplankton. As of late I find the Cooking Mama games very relaxing and fun myself. You also get the joy of making yummy food... With out the resulting 'ugh this is gonna make me fat' guilt afterwards. I also like goofing off in the minigame parts of Kingdom Hearts, cause if the combat or minigames don't work I can look to the other!

Lastly I also like to play a game with characters and a story that I enjoy and just continue on with the story, sometimes it helps to just get my mind off the worries of one thing and into the world of game. I most often do this with one I've played before, the familiarity feels good and I get to revel more in a world that I enjoyed before.

Playing Borderlands with 3 friends is about unstressful as it can get. Well, unless you're going after Crawmerax. Fuck that guy.

I like playing left 4 dead 2 and killing hordes of zombies on easy mode with an ax! I also like playing Loz: Ocarina of time cause I've played through it so many times it's become mindless and it's also really nostalgic and makes me happy :) The original Spyro games are good too! Basically anything that isn't frustrating at all!

I actually prefer more 'peaceful' games for stress relief. As such, Minecraft, Civ 4, Tropico, Anno 1503, Rollercoaster Tycoon, and Sim City.
