What are some good GTA clone games.

By this i mean open world games, which allow you to steal cars and shoot guns.

NOT OBLIVION!

Mine would have to be Scarface: World is yours. Awsome game with great plot and good gameplay.
What are some others?

well... Saint's Row isn't bad... everyone talks crazy ghetto though. To an obnoxious level.

Mafia was good, Mafia II will be good I'm sure... Just to name a few.

Saints row is a good one, you get to customise your character & car.

It's got varied missions & stuff, can't wait for saints row 2 :)

The Godfather. It's the only real GTA knock-off that I've played, and I was very pleasantly surprised by how fun it turned out to be.

Well, how about Crackdown? Sure, it had a terrible story, but the super-hero aspect of it was pretty fun to play around with.

Whenever I play a GTA clone I wish was playing GTA instead.
I guess at a push I would say Spiderman 2, and even Tony Hawks because they take elements from GTA to make them better games rather than copy them completely. In both these games it's fun to move around these sprawling environments

Well GTA4 is actually the first GTA game that I have got, but before getting it I had Just Cause for the PS2.

After playing GTA4 for a while I realised how simular the two actually are. The map of Just Cause is huge, you can steal cars of people whilst in them, one of the better features though is that you can get on the roof of a car and then jump onto another one.

Suprisingly I enjoyed Saints Row, and I hate "gangsta ghetto gangbanger" stuff, the focused story, engaging mini-games and other fun stuff really made it stand out on how much FUN it was, despite lacking the shear bredth and depth of the GTA series, and being an unabashed ripoff.

Crackdown I'd agree with. Tossing cars around and leaping from skyscraper to skyscraper, awesome. Hmm, it's a pretty small genre though isn't it?

There's the GTA series, Saint's Row, Crackdown. I recall some of the various Spiderman titles being quite freeform as regards to exploration (Heh, no car stealing as I remember though ^^')

Speaking of which, these type of games can be great, huge sprawling affairs with loads of things to see and do, but...quite often it seems, that most of the effort is spent on the outdoor enviroments, and anything indoors if the game even has indoor sections are very limited, or is simply one or two copy pasted area over and over. Kind of an annoying thing I've found rather than something hugely disruptive. Still, there's some that do both enviroments quite well.

Touche. That was an awesome game. I forgot all about it, which I guess goes to show how underappreciated it is.

Surely this is going to be a very short thread, as you're being very specific in your criteria. I'm not sure there are that many more games that fit your criteria, or certainly none that I've played.

Well, it has no cars, but Daggerfall is pretty excellent. You can thrash tons of people, and beatdown all the cops when they try to arrest you. You can even lie your way out of jail, something I haven't seen yet in GTA games.

P.S. I realize Daggerfall is exactly what you're not talking about, but unfortunately there aren't really any great GTA clones out yet. Things like true crime and NARC were jokes.

I can remember liking True Crime: streets of LA. (not sure if it was called that, but whatever)

The Godfather. I loved it, end of story. Brilliant story and gameplay and one of the best games in my (*ahem*) extensive library.

Also Spiderman 2. In Spidey II you could stop people from stealing cars, which is almost on topic. Slightly more with the GTA feel was the fact that after pulling the crooks out of the car you could beat their ass down.

Saint's Row is the only one that really comes to mind. It had solid gameplay, a decent combat system (by no means perfect, but better than the load of shit found in most other GTA wannabe games), and a nice car customization system which admittedly I was disappointed to see absent in GTA IV. However, the way characters spoke was certainly annoying, so it was of some relief that your own character only had three lines throughout the game to avoid him spewing gangster gobshite throughout the course of the game.

Alright, Streets of L.A. was interesting for me because it showed areas where I could walk to in real life if I so desired. In fact I've been many of the places the game depicted. However the combat was really easy, and even though L.A. can be dirty, I refuse to believe that every other old lady walking down the street is carrying 400$ and 10 pounds of cocaine in her purse.

Streets of New York was barely playable, and this comes from an Ex-Activision game tester.

Mercenaries is great, probably the best GTA-style game of the last gen.

Another last gen goody is the widely overlooked Total Overdose, which is a hilariously stupid good time. And I realize I'm in the minority, but I liked Gun too. You could probably grab the 360 version for $10 these days.

And Crackdown, natch.
