Final Fantasy 8 and Septerra Core are the only ones i've played.

Oh, and The Last Remnant, a game that i could never bring myself to get into no matter how many chances i gave it.

Holy crap. Someone else who's played Septerra Core!
Of course.

...I say as if it wasn't a total fluke that I own that game. Other than a few parts in the middle where the gameplay (not the story; that was consistently good until the horrible ending) started to drag, I love it.

There are the FFVII and FFVIII ports... But I wouldn't recommend the former, it's really, really horrible in quality. VIII might be okay if you get it to work.

Of course you can always emulate easily all the FFs from I-VI, although that's more or less illegal... And the US versions might not be all that great in comparison to latter ports.

I was never able to finish it. There was some kind of bug or glitch where I couldn't get past a certain part. I don't remember the specifics, but I had to get some gas masks to get through a certain area and go slay some god or something. Anyway, even after getting the masks it wouldn't let me through. I tried a bunch of different ways. I even re-installed and replayed the game. Nothing worked.

Grandia 2?
Ninjad. That game kicks WAY too much a$$.

Let me tell you a story about a little boy who was happily playing FF all his life and always thought that the turn based combat in it was the best thing since sliced bread. Than Grandia came along... And the boy was marveled by the new take on turn based combat it brought with it. In fact he was so awestruck that he shed a single tear as he sold his PS1 to purchase Dreamcast and play Grandia 2 (in hind sight that was a BIG mistake, should've waited a few years and kept both).

For the rest of his life the boy would cringe every time he had to play any other RPG with a turn based combat. And sigh, remembering the glorious epitome of Grandia that went beyond "Attack, Guard, Magic" formula.

On Grandia 2: I completely recommend it, in fact I demand that you get it. At first I despised it for getting rid of the Weapon/Magic experience I came to love in G1 (-). But when I thought about it more, it did diminish the grind substantially (+). And they had more quirky characters (Demon, Lion-man, Android... did I mention a f**in' DEMON of pure awesome?)(+). And the "mandatory kid character" stayed silent for the most of the game (+) (Oh Sue of G1... I wanted to crucify her. Oh how happy I was when she was booted from the party... But they just insisted on bringing the b*tch back...) .

OH SHIT! I forgot about that.

I second this game.

Thanks for reminding me...I wonder if its Windows 7 capable...
I wonder the same. If it is not, there is always the... Dreamcast emulators... Seriously, why are they so horrible compared to the PSX emulators?
Dreamcast was dual-layered. The discs, I mean.

I'm going to suggest something different, since it seems everyone has the rest covered.

Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy 2 were released on iTunes for the ipod touch and iphone (9 bucks each). I bought FF1 almost a month ago, and I still haven't beat it.

These are classic JRPGs, and hardly complex by todays standards. The characters you control in FF1 are 4 mutes, and goals are as simple as "restore the crystals to power." The game is challenging in parts... very challenging. So, it's worth some attention if you favor old-old school games.

The art direction I love. It's close to FF6, with it's revamped graphics. So graphicly, it's very pleasing to the eye, if not simple.

Huh. Been a while since I played; that sounds like Shell 6, using the gas masks obtained from Shell 4...okay, so I remember more than I thought (I also remember needing Earplugs later for the same type of puzzle). Did everyone have the gas masks equipped?

Only bug I ever encountered was because I was technically cheating. You can enter in a code that shows you enemy health and action bars (I used that and the "enemy line of sight" code), but if you did that and used the Big Bang or Black Hole spells, the bars would disappear and the game would crash. Had to get used to turning the code off and on mid-combat.

I say get an PS1 emulator and play all the classics like, FF7, Chrono Cross, and Persona.

Or if you like older ones find an emulator for an older console and get a game from there like Chrono Trigger.

thanks for the comments guys, I might have to try emulators, or I may just replay DA and get the new expansion, shame though, I really fancied playing an over-the-top jrpg.

hi guys,

so, I'm up in uni and I didn't have enough room to bring my ps3 up with me, and with final; fantasy 13 out and the fact that I've finished dragon age means I'm feeling like a good jrpg to sink me teeth into, anyone got any good suggestions?

thanks in advance,
rowan-thats-me
Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII and The Last Remnant. Those are really the only ones I know of, unless you want Shin Megami Tensei Imagine online, but that's an MMO.
I hope this helps.

As mentioned before, The Last Remnant is a pretty good jRPG, but it's really a 'love it or hate it' kind of game. You'll love the tactical gameplay, the big open world, the many characters, and the well-paced story or you'll hate the very confusing (at first) battle system, the dorky main character, the occasional lack of a direction, and the overall lack of clarity in how the game's various systems work.

Final Fantasy 7 and 8 were released for the PC, and they're fan favorites. I prefer 8 myself, but both are must-plays if you like jRPGs.

Septerra Core suffers from poor pacing, both in the storyline and during individual battles, but other than that it's a great game with an engaging story, cool characters, and some nice gameplay elements.

Anachronox is a very underrated game in the genre (I'm guessing because, like Septerra Core, it's not made by a big Asian developer), but I consider it a must-play. It's got good gameplay, an interesting story, and a quirky sense of humor.
