I was about to say Courage the Cowardly Dog (one of my favorite childhood shows), but I think it was already gritty and weird enough. I need not say more than this image:

If Courage got a gritty re-launch... I think 'sleep' would be banned from my conceptual vocabulary.

^Seconded. There were things on that show I still can unsee, and when I hear the music from the episode that pic is from, I still get chills.

I still want a gritty reboot of Sleeping Beauty where Maleficent makes a deal with The Devil and comes back to life and kills Phillip and Aurora's baby in the crib. Aurora then proceeds to go on a Kill Bill style spree of revenge killings against the forces of darkness, taking on all the powers of Hell with an arsenal of big fuck-off weapons supplied to her by the three good fairies, except the three good fairies are now hot young supermodels in a three-way lesbian relationship. The movie ends in a brutally gory showdown between Aurora, Maleficent, and The Devil.

Seriously, someone has to make this happen.
