Wow, seriously...
Atkinson and Thompson better don't find out about this.
Now if he just had said it was for hunting or that he just always wanted to collect guns...

Well tecnically you could get a Bushmaster ACR as long as you have the licenses and it falls into code.

but its still over 3 grand not counting all of the hoops you need to jump through to get it. For some reason people believe that Americans walk into gun stores with big wads of cash and walk out with assault rifles.

those people fall into the category of "Dumbass", or "euro-trash"

Ok, now I know this SEEMS bad, but let's just think about this for a second. This makes it quite obvious that games are capable of teaching people through tangential learning. Yes, right now they're learning about dangerous things like guns but the game DID get them interested in learning things. We can expand on this. We can teach people through the magic of games about deeper issues.

This is sad, and makes me feel bad. I play CoD, and I actually DO know something about firearms. I've been around them all my life because my dad collects them. When I was little he would show me differences between them and teach me about them.

I would have called the law authorities at that moment. Sounds like the kind of nutjob that goes around shooting up schools.
True, but he mentioned how the kid was dressed, so he was probably just some retard gang-banger wannabe, and most likely white.

Ugh, I hate those people. You see a lot of them around the Escapist, unfortunately. People who like to think they're badass because they know what a bunch of guns look like.

Congratulations, you can identify a P90. That is the extent of your knowledge.

Slightly OT, but it always made me laugh to see the automatic rifleman in Ghost Recon waving a SAW about one-handed like it was a pistol. 17 pounds doesn't even sound like that much, but jog for six miles with one, and it feels like the heaviest thing in the world.

not sure what a "nething" is but its not good when you have some jackass walk in off the street and ask for a "SMG" or a "sniper rifle" and not understanding anything about them. Thats a major fucking concern.

You'll have people shoving .20 gauge ammo into a .12 gauge shotgun or taking a 6.8mm carbine and shoving 7mm ammo inside.

This has been happening for ages with Guitar Hero and suddenly everyone knows the entire Smashing Pumpkins back catalogue, or so they think. So while I see why they're annoyed, I can't say I feel much sympathy. Complaining annoys me (the irony that I feel the need to complain about it), just leave them be, eventually they'll show how much less they know. If anything, it should provide them with some humour, like the sniper example, which is hilarious.

Golden test: tell me what to do in a misfire, and I'll pass you as competant.

Amazing how some people blur the line between games and reality. I'm surprised that Forza hasn't turned everyone into racing pros.
Put the safety on and eject the bullet?

Keep in mind that I've only ever used bolt action rifles, and I've never had a misfire.

I wouldent worry about it. with a catagory like "sniper rifle" he would be standing around awhile.

like, years surfing through gun catalogs.

I wouldn't be too concerned. Zero skill is required to kill in Halo and CoD (prove me wrong) with a sniper rifle, or anything really. They probably couldn't figure out how to LOAD the rifle to begin with! xD

First the Guitar Hero effect with idiots thinking they can play complex musical scores by pressing 5 buttons in a set pattern..now we have this--

Another funny story is told by Jim:

I wouldn't call it the Call of Duty effect as much as the Halo effect. He came in to a Pawn Shop I was shopping around at and asked for an "Ess Em Gee" (Submachine gun). The owner said that he didn't carry them. He then asked if he had any sniper rifles. The owner showed him a .270 (I believe). As the punk (hat cocked off to the side and his pants at a level where a belt would not allow them to fall) looked down the scope, he asked how to "zoom it" (a common feature of scoped rifles in video games). The owner showed him how to magnify and clarify the image. The punk said that he was just used to the rifle doing that for him.

Finally the owner asked what the kid was looking for to which he replied "I just want to headshot some noobs! Like in Halo!"

The conversation quickly degraded from that moment and ended very shortly.
Not only did that kid make the gaming community look worse the owner also neglected to call the cops for potential murder from that.

I have to admit, playing games like COD have made me want to try my hand at shooting a real gun.
On a firing range or something ofc.

Well, they might not be gun enthusiasts, but at least they're enthusiastic. That's one step in the right wrong some direction.

I'd also like to point out that if someone older that 13 or so goes on about how they want a sniper rifle that operates by itself so that they can "headshot noobs", then it's time to call the nice men in white coats bringing the funny jacket. Or laugh at them until they run away in tears.

"YES! Finally played Modern Warfare 2 for 20 hours straight! Now I am fully trained and ready to use a sniper rifle on the battlefield."

People are just so, so stupid...
The learning curve from one game to another is hellish enough.
Stalker to Arma II- realistic ranges and ballistics confused me enough, so seeing some fool try out a rifle after some time on MW2 would be hilarious. Tragic, perhaps. But hilarious.

(also, anyone notice how all the guns in STALKER are the wrong way around? Sure it looks impressive to have bullet casings flying across your vision every shot, but in real life you don't want that to happen. See the LA85 and left handed shooters.)

Shit like this makes us gamers look bad.

Also, quick Wikipedia check:

"The ACR is currently slated to be available in 2nd Quarter 2010 for military, government and commercial customers...suggested retail price between $2,685 - $ 3,061.00"

Guess asking if there was an ACR there was not that stupid.
