Is it just me, or since around a quarter through the last decade gun firing noise has become less "BAM! BLAM BLAM!" and more "Pop pop tink tink"

Examples: Play Half life 1, or other simular games of the same era. Now play Call of duty world at war, Bad company, or any other "realistic shooter" even one of my favorite games Men of war seems to have no base to the gunfire. Only tank shells have a nice BOOM to them.

Bad Company 2, Half Life, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Duty 1/2/4 have some damn cool gun sounds.

Oh yeah and the AK 47 and AK 2012 from Metro sound pretty brutal as well.

I don't really care if gun sounds are 'bad' most of the time, 'cept for the 'rattlesnake' effect of the suppressors in Black Ops...

Aren't suppressors mean't to make more of a 'cough' sound?

I like the Bad Company 2 sounds! Try changing your sounds to "War Tapes" in the menu, from hifi or whatever it's on.

Suppressors do not do much, you are talking at least 100db if one is used without special ammo.
If special sub-sonic ammo is used it can be quieter, but the stopping power will be lower.

No, it's actually pretty hard to tell the difference between them and regular gunfire up close. The little thump noise from movies and games is total bullshit.

Though, if you're going to have a non-realistic suppressor you might as well give it the little cough noise.

It's actually dependent on the weapon and ammunition! With the right gun (and ammunition), it's damn near silent. With another it's still pretty much REALLY LOUD but makes it impossible to use the sound to trace your position.

With others the gunfire itself is muffled, but the gun's action is noisy.

This video is a great example of what actual weapons with suppressors (or 'silencers') sound like [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Rgwk4f7dew].

I just go on what I see on TV, most people seem to wear ear protection while doing target practice, so I'd naturally assume they are pretty dang loud.

I love Half Life's sounds. The pistol makes a nice crack while the SMG has more of a powerful feel.

If it really bothers me that much, I go searching for sound replacements (via FPSBanana).

But I don't really care about the sound of gunfire. Realistic is cool, but unrealistic doesn't bother me.

Real gun fire is quite loud. When outdoors, you dont' really need ear protection but your ears will be ringing after a few rounds down range. There are some exceptions though. While I can fire my 9mm all day long outside with no real issues, after about two shots with my buddy's .45 the sound causes actual pain in my ears.

In Call of Duty they use the real gun sounds from each gun in real life, so you can't complain about how a gun sounds if that is how they actually sound.

Even so only a few are like the sounds they described, and most guns only sound like that when there are silencers on them.

Maybe there is something wrong with your sound system...

Because guns sound completely different outside than they do inside. I'm not sure I've ever come across a game where guns sound different depending on your location.

I love Arma2. It's much better with the sound mods though...infact its 10x better with a ton of mods.
