And as awesome as Gundam is, can you really consider it something that has benefited society in the way he wants games to? Let's not get too defensive, though. Tomino sees plenty of flaws in his own industry as well, and likens them to those facing the progress of games development.
Haha...I was about to say the same...

Still, I can't be too upset about this. I have always considered gaming a "pastime". But while I may invest an appropriate amount of time for gaming, there are people out there who do dedicate way too much time to mashing buttons.

From personal experience, I can say plenty of gamers that are in online clans have no doubt funneled significant chunks of time into gaming. Time that may have been better spent putting off the gaming for the weekend, and instead, studying for the upcoming exam...

And a show about giant robots is productive and totally doesn't waste electricity.
Haven't you heard? Watching Gundam shows actually CREATES electricity that awill be used to power the lights of orphans' houses. Watching Gundam obsessively is helping the world!

I see his point but I dont think he thought his mathematics through very well.
3 billion people playing games?
Thats just under half the population.
And I dont think we'll be seeing 10 billion people playing games until the next century, by which time consoles will be powered by hopes and dreams :)

"I think videogames are evil" I find it extremely hard to believe this was said by the guy who created the Gundam series

The guys is just an old idiot who doesn't understand video games. What makes this even more hilarious is that he's the creator of a very popular anime series, which require TVs to actually watch, which require plastic to print etc etc.

I have one thing to say to that: Organized Sports.

How are they contributing to society? The only difference between the two is that one consumes electricity and the other wastes millions of dollars on players.
because fox news says that video games cause people to become mindless killing machines that think the people they kill will respawn

well shit it seems kind of stupid when i say it like that

all hail fox news the king of mind control

So, I'm reminded of an article I read a couple years ago, I'll see if I can find it.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4685909/

I don't think it's the same article, but the point remains the same. There is a strong correlation relating gamers to the ability to preform surgery. Basically, the idea is that video games help build strength in one's fine motor skills which are essential for certain types of surgery. This seems like exactly the opposite of video games being "Evil."

While I have a degree of respect for Mr. Tomino, I feel he needs to do some research.

He has a valid point.
Agreed. We as a society should build upon this ideal and hopefully it will slightly improve our lives. Or we can just stick to our Halo 3's and Medal of Duty: Honor Call 4's and... uhh... lost my train of thought. Oh well. I'll get the cake! Who's got the mead?

I don't know about the rest of you but I think I can say that if it weren't for gaming I would probably be doing more drugs.

Scaling down drug use (slightly), is probably not evil.

And they waste electricity as well via stadium lighting, air conditioning and/or heating, and all the TVs on which they are simultaneously broadcast. Hell, I think they waste more electricity.

He talks like gaming is the ONLY thing gamers do. Right, we don't have jobs, lead productive lives, and are all wards of the state, wasting our time and "society"'s money.

Whatever. I'm off to work.

(Really. Twelve hour nights FTW.)

By his logic, anything anybody does as a means of relaxation is a waste. Why doesn't he go off on people reading fiction books, or listening to music? All of it is in many ways a waste of time, and great deal of it consumes just as many resources as video games do. What exactly does he think people are doing when they're wacthnig his little opus?

This whole thing smacks of an idealogue with a tenuous understanding of what he is talking about.
