Wahts the difference ebtween a jo and a bo staff?
A jo staff is about 4-4.5 feet long and about the thickness of your average cane, whereas a bo staff is typically about six feet long, is a little more flexible, and some tend to be tapered.

oka. SO basically size and thickness, to determine use.

I've never held a gun, I doubt I ever will but I'm somewhat interested in the mechanics of it all. cased rounds versus caseless, rifled barrels, calibre and all that jazz. It's not at the top of my priorities but still, something I might look at every so often

I was a M249 SAW gunner when I was in Afghanistan. Before that I had an M4 carbine. I personally LOVED my M249. The thought of 200 rounds and 1000 in my assault-pack made me feel safe, because NO fire fight lasts only 10 minutes. Plus you can have the short buttstock (M4 style collapsible) with a PEQ 4 laser and an ACOG on it...and it becomes a total BEAST!

I'm jealous. I've always wanted to shoot a FN FAL. I've never even seen one IRL though. I want to shoot a G3 and AUG A3 too.
You live in the States right? Join a local gun club, go to a range that have one for rent, or buy one.

Guns are guns. Like everything you get use to it. The difference is how much you're willing to spend on ammo. $40 for 1100 of .22lr rounds or $350 for 1000 of 5.56 rounds.

Yes the M1A/M14 use 7.62X51 NATO. So does the FAL.

Weapons fired for the US military:
-M16A2 rifle (5.56x45mm NATO)
-M4 carbine (5.56x45mm NATO)
-M249 squad automatic weapon (5.56x45mm NATO)
-M9 pistol (9x19mm parabellum)
-M240B machine gun (7.62x51mm NATO)
-M2 machine gun (.50BMG)
-M203 grenade launcher (40x46mm High Explosive... and training rounds)
-Mk.19 grenade machine gun (40x53mm High Explosive... and training rounds)
-AT4 antitank weapon... trainer. Never fired a live one (9x19mm parabellum paint rounds)
-M67 hand grenade, if it counts (only ever threw a live one in basic training. They're not much use in defending convoys)

Weapons fired as a recreational activity in civilian life (many of these I own... the majority I do not):
-Glock21 (.45ACP)
-Glock36 (.45ACP)
-Glock39 (.45GAP)
-Glock17 (9x19mm para)
-Glock20 (10x25mm auto)
-Springfield M1911 (.45ACP)
-Springfield XD (3 different ones. One full sized in .45ACP, one full sized and one subcompact in 9x19mm para)
-Taurus Millennium Pro subcompact (.45ACP)
-Taurus Model 94 revolver (.22LR)
-CZ-75B (.40S&W)
-MRI Desert Eagle (.44mag and .50AE... same gun, swappable barrels)
-PSL designated marksman's weapon (knockoff of the Dragunov SVD built with a Kalashnikov action. 7.62x54Russian)
-Mosin-Nagant Model 1891/30 (7.62x54Russian)
-Yugoslavian SKS, M59 (7.62x39Soviet)
-Arisaka Type-99 (7.7x58mm Japanese)
-Franchi AL-48 semiautomatic shotgun (12gauge x 2.75" shotshells)
-various revolvers owned by friends... never asked the make of any of 'em (.357 mag, .44mag, .38spl)
-various hunting rifles, both semi-auto and bolt-action, from many manufacturers (.22LR, .17HMR, .223, .270, .308, .30-06, 300mag)
-various pump-action, semi-auto, and lever-action shotguns from many manufacturers (12gauge x 2.75", 12gauge x 3.5"magnum, 10gauge x I don't remember... ow)

Weapons systems worked on but never (personally) fired for the US military:
-M60 machine gun (7.62x51mm NATO)
-M18 Claymore anti-personnel mine (all I really did was inspect 'em and hand 'em off)
-M230 chain gun (30x113mm High Explosive)
-AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and guidance systems (178mm diameter)
-Hydra 70 unguided rockets & pods (70mm diameter)

...christ, this almost reads like a resume...

@EllEzDee No, that is in fact a real life weapon. Its a military anti-tank rocket. They are a LOT of fun to fire off, and the recoil is managable when you're braced right. I've shot three of them so far.

@ the OP, my list includes...various 9mm, 45 and 40s&w handguns. a 22 longrifle (Mossburg 802) a 7mm rifle (Savage model 111) a 30-06 (Remington, not sur eof the model) AK-47 (7.62mm) PN90 (dont remember the cal. on those things) 308 (Winchester) 12 gauge shotgun (Mossburg 535 pump action along with a Siaga which is an AK style weapon that chambers shotgun shells)

Military weapons I have fired M9, M16A2, M16A4, M4A2, 240B, M249 SAW (I love this weapon. If possible I'd buy one) AT-4, M203 grenade launcher, M2 .50 cal machine gun.

Finally, to add a personal feeling to the conversation between Ampersand and brtshstel, I understand both points you two are trying to make. Ampersand believes the world would be better of if firearms didnt exist in the first place while brtshstel follows the "they are needed tools" line of thinking. While I personally agree with brtshstel entirely I can see how Ampersand would dislike firearms when he seems to dislike violence as a whole (if Ampersand is actually female please forgive me for assuming you're male).

Not everyone in the world can AVOID being exposed to it though. Sometimes there is no choice but to actively defend yourself of the people around you. Police officers are routinely targeted JUST for being cops. Soldiers the same thing. Yes, we do volintarily put ourselves in the position to be attacked, but it isn't because we are just waiting to get to hurt someone, it's because we believe that what we do makes the world a better place in the long run. For the record, I don't disrespect your opinion here, I WISH the world could be a place where ther was no concept of needing to defend ourselves from others.

I'm rather jealous now...... biggest gun I've fired would be a .22 rifle :(

Have been to the range a few times with my dad but the government is cracking down on licensed gun owners and gun clubs. It becoming harder and more expensive to own them and keep ranges open and licensed, so they can be seen to be doing something about rising gun crime in Ireland. Rather pointless as criminals are hardly going to apply for a license :/
I own quite a number of firearms. Probably more than all of Escapist member combine. My favorite caliber is the .22lr.

The difference between you and me is that I have access to a wide range of firearms that I can own. However once you own it it just another weapon/tool. For example I either buy or built a firearm. Once I got it in my hand I put it in my safe unfired just like the other countless firearms I own. Of my entire collection I only use the same 5 firearms.

I sympathizes with you. It's a shame that your government does not trust the citizens that elected them. You have to fight for your rights.

I agree, the SAW is a piece of art. I do find the CAR stock to be very uncomfortable though, I can never get a good check weld with them. ACOGs are added bonuses to those beuties.

You can use them in more or less the same way. The only real difference is that the jo staff can be used somewhat like a sword whereas the bo staff can be used more like a spear. You can use both for the other ones too, but because of the size difference, it's awkward. I prefer the jo staff mainly because I've done kata with the bo when my sensei wanted to teach us during weapons practice one day. I can tell you, about 3 hours of bo kata, unless you're used to it, can be a real bummer the next day. Of course, the bo staves we were using were home made and were pretty heavy. It's a little hard to whip a 6 foot long stick that probably weighs about ten pounds around for three hours. Don't believe me? Give it a try sometime. XD

There are a lot of people that are too naive to think that if you submit, the criminals won't hurt you. These people are living in a fantasy land. Real life works differently. I can list countless of news or police reports where the victims submitted to the criminal only to be rape, killed, or both. That's real life.

I've shot my dad's .22 single shot bolt action rifle, chech-made slug gun and his Franch 1917 over-under 12G shotgun.
As for my Stepdad, I've shot his .22 winchester remake, his 30-30 winchester remake and his .308 bolt action rifle.

I was thinking that I might get one of those. How did it shoot? I've never shot a .45 GAP round or a Glock, but I hope to get some shots off someday before I really start looking for one.

I was just wondering. If you have ever shot a gun, what kind was it, and what was the round that you shot? I ask the round size for those of us that don't know what rounds go to what weapons. Grain count isn't so much as issue here, but if you'd like to post that too, feel free.

I've shot a S&W model 29 with the .44 magnum rounds, a Mosin Nagant with 7.62x56mmR, a .380 pistol (it wasn't mine, and I don't recall the make and model), a semi-auto .22 and bolt action .22 both of which I don't recall the makes or models of. I think the semi-auto was a Mauser, but I don't recall the model.

Soon, I'm going to shoot an M1A though. I think that shoots the 7.62x51mm. I think it's x51 anyway.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the 12 gauge shotgun I shot. I've shot buckshot, birdshot, and slugs from it.
Lets see, I have shot a 50 Cal, C7, C8, 9mm, MP5 and a few others, It was back when I was in the military, They also hate it when you call them guns they insisted it be called a weapon but I still used the term gun because a club could be considered a weapon and guns to me were just a classification.

Honestly, it feels about the same as a 185-grain ACP. I usually fire 230-grain, though, so I'm used to slightly more recoil. The grip of the gun was also slimmer than I'm used to. I could nail targets just the same as with my ACPs, but I'm very comfortable with Glocks (including subcompacts, which is what I fired the GAP out of). A lot of people find them blocky and hard to shoot straight with, so I'd recommend getting your hands on someone else's before you decide to start owning Glocks. I love 'em, but I just have weird hands, apparently.

I haven't shot much, especially recently. I do remember shooting my shotgun and my SKS. I have a Mossberg (I think) camo painted 12 gauge. The SKS uses a 7.62 mm bullet (tis a semi-auto AK for civilian use).

I've fired air rifles, but not real rifles (which are harder to get hold of in the UK) or handguns (which are illegal for civilians) although I'd like to own a rifle one day, just a .22 or .17 HMR for small game and plinking really. Im never going to be hunting boar or deer so I wouldnt need anything bigger than that really, though I'd still like to fire some larger calibers too.

I dislike them ... they are heavy, loud and smell bad when you shoot them. Which consequently makes you smell bad.

People's facination with guns is scary ... it's like being fascinated with a diesel pump. Only smells worse and is even louder <.<
I collect swords and know how to use them, a jo staff, bo staff, and bow and arrows, if that makes you feel any better. XD
See swords I can live with because they don't make much noise when you swing them, and they don't smell. I quite like sabre fencing myself.

But guns? Wtf? It's a clunky piece of metal lacking in any sort of grace or elegance.

Not only that but they are, without a shadow of doubt, the most cowardly weapons there are (I suppose barring ballistic missile and other long range ordnance). It's quite pathetic really people's attachment to things that were designed to kill other animals at a range.

Anyways, thats just my opinion <.<
As opposed to peoples obsession with things designed to kill up close? Sorry but I dont get it lol.
Ampersand said:
I hate guns, they're a weapon used by weaklings and cowards.
and hunters, competition shooters, target shooters, the military and police force...

I'm not seeing how guns make people cowards, theyre very useful tools indeed, as well as being fun :)
Hunters: Hunting is unnecessary ,cruel and cowardly (hunting for sport 100 times more so)
target shooting: Go nuts but why not do something useful instead.
the military: same as guns have no right to exist.
Police: if you need a gun you're not good enough at your job.
And farmers? I haven't checked where you live, but here in Aus guns are pretty much essential for people living on large properties... First and foremostly as the quickest and most humane way to put down dying or severely injured animals.

Further than that, when I went out shooting rabbits with some friends... I was much happier seeing a rabbit shot dead, than seeing the ones sick with Myxomatosis and poison baits limping around half-dead for days...

Guns have a purpose, and for sport (clay and target shooting) they are perfectly acceptable. And your argument of it being pointless, loses absolutely all credibility on a gaming foum.. Target shooting doesn't hurt anyone, doesn't affect your life in the slightest and hence I'd argue that your opinion on the matter is biased and doesn't mean diddly-squat.

In law enforcement/military use, I'm sure we'd all agree life would be great if guns weren't necessary, but they are, both as a deterrent and a method of defence. Of course, in these situations they are occasionally misused as well.

Lastly, hunting is an issue which I'll accept an opinion on either way... I don't have a problem with people hunting rabbits and other pests, or for food, but I'm not so sure on killing animals for fun. The thought of killing with no good reason doesn't really sit too well with me, but each to his own, provided it's done as 'humanely' as possible.
