Borderlands... well... Since my hunter was already level 61 (before the update and that shit DLC), Lilith seems like the second best character to play through the game as.

I don't choose a woman, but I always, always play a black guy, which would make sense if I were black. I don't know why I do it either. It's not even a conscious choice anymore, i just go straight to black guy.

"I like girls" + "I am a girl" = "I like myself".

Oh, that's not liking myself in a self-esteem issues kind of way, but a MY OWN CLONE kind of way.

So we're clear.

If there's a choice, I usually play my own gender, guys who are girls I imagine play as girls for further Escapism.

If it's because the main character is female, then I don't mind then either.

I chose to play as a female shepard in Mass Effect because I found the male shepard to have an extremely unemotional voice.
In homage to a line that never made it into a film: Ninjas... Daaaaamn...

That and using Z-Puncs example of lifting a monster into the air and chopping it in half as awesome: A woman doing it would be just f**king scary, which makes it all the more awesome.
there's a movie called the warriors way you should watch it.

I dont play a lot of rpg games where you can choose sex, but I dont see why playing as a girl would make you loose your immersion or w/e. Maybe when I play some story driven game and really enjoy playing the main character (like Zoe in Dreamfall), its not so much that I feel I am her, as I feel and understand her?

I kinda want to play through the mass effects now to see if playing as a girl would feel less immersive.

I'll admit it. I am a pervert, but what is your point? Do I want to play a game where I see a sweaty grizzly statue-esque man for the majority of the game OR a female who sweats just as much and has an unrealistic figure as much as the guy BUT is FAR more appealing to see for 20+ hours of game-play? When I play a game using the female gender I don't really go into "immersion" mode in the RP kind of area. I see it more like I am a spectre of sort watching this individual getting into situations that I may or may not of influenced, depending on the game.

I was just trying to think of a reason why guys so often seem to play women in video games.
I'm a rather feminine guy, I go nuts when I see something cute, my favorite colour is purple, and I have to drag my girlfriend to the mall because she doesn't enjoy shopping as much as me.
(For online games at least) I occasionally play as a female character so I don't have to deal with all the questions from normal people and insults from homophobs.

I'm feminine but I still don't play as women, IMHO I think it's odd but I don't have anything against those who do.

Reasons why I sometimes play a girl character:

- Better options (like the perks in Fallout 3: Ladykiller is BS, but Black Widow is actually useful)
- Better voiceacting (the male Jedi Academy voice is retarded)
- Aesthetically pleasing (personally, I enjoy looking at a girl's ass better)
- Different (better) storytelling (Dragon Age, or the different companions in KotOR II)
wholeheartedly agree, all 4 points work with me.
if I liked the RPG enough, I usually start a second playthrough with a different gender than the one I first played with.

I only do this for RPGs, though never in the first play-through (where i role-play as myself). As said in the OP, i usually want to know what's different in the game for female characters, create a completely fictional character to role-play as, but also the classic: "If you're going to be staring at the characters butt for 50+ hours, i would prefer it it was a female one".

i've only played a female once and that was a female goblin on wow and it was only because all the male goblins looked like crap. i think most people who the the other gender is because it's another angle example i am sure jackass #46 will say this to a guy who killed 40 bandits but what will he say to a girl? i honestly prefer to play a guy because when i play a game i enter the game my character is me or as close as i can get.

also they are a bit slimmer so they are slightly harder to hit

for me it all depends on what im playing, like in fable 2 and 3 and fallout and mass effect, playing as a girl changes nothing, so i play as a guy, which is what i am, but in left 4 dead i'll play as zoey because i find her as the most interesting character out of the lot

Yay someone else plays xD.

It's safe to say that in this game of mine filled with kids/teens, most people playing Viper are horny and lonely. But! This character is extremely thin and super fast so that's another reason. I once met a girl/woman playing her and was surprised. I usually hear a whiny voice from her but instead quick typing.

My friend plays as a girl for the sole reason of 'she's thinner.' I know balancing issue but there you go.

It makes sense to play as your opposite gender, because that player model would appeal more to you. I have no idea what women see in men, but I do love how delightfully curvy women can be. However, I don't think it helps with immersion if all you want to do is unequip your character's pants.

I'm assuning we just mean in games where gender doesn't really have any specific advantages either way i.e. The weaker-but-quicker arguement. In this case, I don't always play as a girl given the choice, but when I do (especially when re-playing a game), it's because it's interesting to me to see a new set of animation, get to check out a new voice actor, or just because I feel like making my avatar different to the ones I usually play as. Variety is the spice of life, and all.
