You can play like... oblivion, and have a totally different play through by roleplaying as the other gender.

I usually play men in games because:

- well usually you have no choice anyway

- I don't care if I'm a guy or a space alien with 5 tentacles, I'm not the character anyway: it's like reading a book, you're not the character but that doesn't prevent the book from being good.

I always play as a female. I just like the idea of a girl saving the country/planet/universe a whole lot more than a male. Its just cooler when a woman saves everyone, to me at least. I really don't care about athestics, its a video game. I don't really play many online games so its not about free stuff. I always play as a female first so its not to see what changes. I just like the idea of Woman saving everyone.

Or, in Pokemon I just like being female so I can name my character 'Slut'.

I tend to go both ways with this.

In the Baldur's Gate games my character's have most often been male.
In KOTOR my first and second character's were male. Same for Oblivion
In KOTOR 2 and Fallout 3 I went female.
In Mass Effect and Dragon Age I started as male but restarted as female, in Mass Effect because the male voice felt a bit boring so I tried a female Shepard and fuck me if Jennifer Hale doesn't do an awsome job! (Actually, even if you don't agree still feel free to fuck me!)

Anyways, in Dragon Age I switched because my character was a total borefest and I say that knowing I play him myself. He just turned out bad, his face bothered me, sword and shield style wasn't really my thing n' shit. So I made a female rogue instead, dual wielding swords now that's the shit!

Anyways, I'm not quite sure why I like playing female characters. It depends I guess, like in the case with Mass Effect it was mostly the voice. Though in other cases I just feel like it, it simply feels more interesting to me in a way to play as a woman. So maybe I'll go all "Crying Game" on you someday, but til then;

Peace

Why not? It seems awfully backwards to say that you can only play a game as your own assigned gender.
not really. one of the main purposes of games is to become the character in a way. its easier to do that when they are actually LIKE you
Personally I don't want to become the character, I want to play a character. I am not the character in any given game but rather the character is an entity of their own and I am choosing what they say.

And what I said doesn't forbid your viewpoint but sticking solely to what you say forbids mine. Is it not better to have more variety in playing styles and options?

Long ago I met a man on WoW playing a girl...he was my best pal...asked him why he rolled a girl. Said he made it for his wife..

Never understood the healer friend tho...

IMO Mommy issues maybe

If your forced to look at the back of a character through-out a game, it might as well be a girl's back.

My thoughts exactly. I am actually a female character in Dragon Age Origins just because i liked the character models. NOT GAY

I haven't played a female by choice. That is mostly because in MMOs there's the stereotype that the female night elf who's flirty is probably a fat guy who doesn't wear pants. I think that really stuck to me. Hell, even in fighters I avoid playing as a woman. Most of it is to immerse myself completely, but it also feels creepy to me controlling a woman.

To see if it changes anything on the second playthrough."

For me, it's a matter of creating an ideal character. As a guy, I would prefer to use a male swordsman, but I prefer characters who do not look like bodybuilders or short-haired women and focus on speed rather than strength. There are classes that do that, but their specialized armor and fighting style don't fit my image of an ideal warrior(which would be something along the lines of Sesshomaru from Inuyasha but with less feminine hair). That being the case, I find that it can be easier to make a female character who is both good-looking and badass. For example, I liked Lightning from FFXIII better than Tidus from FFX.

As already mentioned, one of the reasons is "More aesthetically pleasing.".

There's also this little thing... majority of games have a lead character who is a male badass whooping some butts and all that shizz. I play female characters to get some variation. Hell I even just started with dnd to see how it is and my character is a female. And as all my female characters I try to make her badass, but at the same time femenine.

I do always create a male character as well but for some reason it just doesn't feel as... interesting. Although I did create an awesome (maybe a bit generic looking) power armor guy in Champions online while I tested it, then it felt awesome, otherwise playing as a guy is quite the meh for me, I'm a guy all the time anyway.

And once again, I like looking at girls way more then guys.

Hope you got some more insight on why some people do as they do Mr. Miaow. Ironically I'm borderline to homophobic and yet I find it more fun and easier to roleplay as a female and always succumb to vanity over my characters. Although playing as a female in dnd is a bit tricky, with me having a dark voice and all.

I was just trying to think of a reason why guys so often seem to play women in video games.

TLDR: Why do men play as women?
Why don't they? There's the PvP argument:

There's the fact that certain characters just suit women better. (I've never seen a Bowman that wasn't fashioned around Robin Hood, but there's a lot of differing Bow-Women)

And often it's a challenge to portray someone apart from yourself - that's the point of RP, in a nut-shell.

Very rarely see women play as men when they have the choice though...
yep thats what most people think

Boring answer: Why not?

Longer, unclear answer: At some point I just started playing female characters rather than male ones.

I don't know why, I can't connect it to any noteworthy change in my life or personality. It just feels right.

It has nothing to do with how other people see me, since I never play online multiplayer or MMOs, and it has nothing to do with distancing myself, since I've never felt it to be harder to relate to a female character as opposed to a male one.

Also, the "if you're going to be staring etc." argument doesn't sound right to me. When you've played a game for a few hours, you're not "watching" your character anymore. Even if you were playing as a character who was completely naked, after a few hours it would probably become mundane. Besides, what games are you playing where you spend the game staring at your character's ass? Shouldn't you be fighting something?

That said, I fully agree that women look better than men. It's beyond just "sexiness", when you have a female character with swords and/or lasers, it just looks cooler. At least it does to me.

On a related note: I'm also a huge fan of Yuri manga, so that might have something to do with it. Especially in BioWare's games.

Reasons why I sometimes play a girl character:

- Better options (like the perks in Fallout 3: Ladykiller is BS, but Black Widow is actually useful)
- Better voiceacting (the male Jedi Academy voice is retarded)
- Aesthetically pleasing (personally, I enjoy looking at a girl's ass better)
- Different (better) storytelling (Dragon Age, or the different companions in KotOR II)

I play a female Commander Shepherd in Mass Effect because male Shepherd annoys me for some reason, I think its his voice. Otherwise I never play a female character myself.

I play girl characters for the same reason I don't read nonfiction books
why would I waste my escapism time doing something I could do in real life?

the only reason chose to play a male character is so I could fuck Tali

the thing I don't get is when people play themselves
my buddy will always make his RPG character look exactly like himself
down to the point where he'll ask if his eyes look right
and that just baffles me. "You're you all day long, wouldn't you rather be Shepard when you're playing a game?"

or maybe I just have gender Identity issues
