I commented on this a long time ago, but mainly it'll be if the character model looks better. And I don't mean more attractive, I mean, if the male character looks freaky or disformed or just... wrong.

My prime example is WoW's Blood Elves. I just don't like the way the male characters look. Every other horde race is fine, but for some reason the male blood elves are a tad off to me. So I played a female. Whatever!

The real question is why does it matter to you? If Jim Bob wants to play as a chick what does it matter?

I have seen this question asked more times then I can count, and never has it ever been anything more then completely and utterly pointless.

Would you go around asking a human why they want to play as a dwarf? I am a human and could not begin to wrap my head around what it would be like to be a dwarf. How is playing as a dwarf any different then playing as a female. In fact I would imagine that playing as at the very least a human female would be easier then a male dwarf since I am sure you have met at least one human female. Actual dwarves are harder to come by I would imagine.
At what point did I say it mattered to me? I am just curious. Or maybe you are right. I will stop questioning anything. BEEP BOOP. EXCUSE ME WHILE I TURN INTO A ROBOT. BEEP BOOP.
Matter to you enough to not only post a thread but monitor it. So it probably does matter to you. If something doesn't matter to me I don't give it more them 2 thoughts.

So again why does it matter to you?

Because it's interesting. If you don't find the human psyche interesting, I think there has to be something wrong with you. It doesn't matter to me that World War Two happened, but I still studied it, because it's interesting.

Most of PRO MMORPG players play as female characters for simple reason. Because armor looks waaay better on them. Male armors looks allthe same and since you play with other 10 milions peoples, you dont want to look the same as they do.
fun fact: I never played WOW

Just to clarify, i'm a girl.
I'd say it's about 50\50 for me. For me RPGs are not at all about making a charectar similar to myself. I enjoy coming up with all kinds of different concepts for my charecters and trying out different rolls, in my opinion it's what RPGs are all about. My charecter's gender is usually just a matter of what I think more fitting.

Some months I'm drawn to the persona of the manly man characters and will play games with those. Other times I feel more like being a badass witch and end up playing games that has the female lead option. Between those two times of extremes it'll be a toss up and rely more on what kind of storyline I want with the gender of the character going completely unnoticed.

There are multiple reasons...

A minority of gamers suffer from gender dysphoria. Or, at least, I do. So I play as a girl so I'm not reminded I'm actually a guy. That's my reason.

I often play trans, but I don't give a crap about gender in games or in real life. It's sad how no one wants to take me seriously when I play a female (though I score major free l00tz), whereas when I play male people won't condescend to me, but they'll kill steal and otherwise treat me like dirt.

Kinda wish I could just play neuter chars.

That's a good question. I too have a male friend who almost exclusively plays as a female character whenever given the option, and he's never given me a good reason why.

What i wonder is WHY do we need a reason to play girls in game. Some do some don't who cares.
Why does your friend have to have a good reason for YOU to play female. He plays for HIMSELF not for YOU.

As for me I always play female if I get the option.
1 ) I like dressing up characters (mmo's/avatars)
2 ) For me it feels more fun and immersive to play the female gender.

It can help people escape from daily life if they can pretend they're something/someone COMPLETELY different to themselves. A heap of testosterone and muscle on screen may remind them of the misery of getting ten wedgies by lunchtime. (Yes, I know i'm only thinking of the stereotypical nerd here, but it's feasible.)

Suppressed gender identity issues, maybe.

I just prefer playing female characters when given the choice.

And I loved Final Fantasy X-2.

I was just trying to think of a reason why guys so often seem to play women in video games.
My brother plays almost exclusively female characters, and I know he isn't alone. I honestly can't think of single good reason to, for me, all it would do is spoil the immersion as I'm NOT a girl. So, anyone who does play as a woman in games, why? Feel free to speculate even if you don't play a woman, but please try not to just descend into "COz ThEy ARe PerVS LoL!".

TLDR: Why do men play as women?

EDIT: Women who play as men also feel free to reply as to why you do.

This is not about sexism, I am NOT saying you can't play as a woman, I just want to know why you do.

Reasons so far:

To see if it changes anything on the second playthrough.

More aesthetically pleasing.

Access to certain classes.

Distance yourself from the character.

Free stuff from online perverts.

EDIT EDIT: The amount of idiotic replies in this thread is making me want to start a thread titled "Why does nobody ever read the first post properly before posting unfounded and offensive comments?"

Thank you to all those people who have actually been helpful.
Easy. In Fallout 3 to get the "Black Widow" perk (which is vastly superior to Lady Killer as most of your opponents are male) you have to be female. Hence, I now roam the wastes as a level 30 max-skill max-special best-perk Demigod feared by all and known by the blood-chilling moniker "Molly".

Why not? It seems awfully backwards to say that you can only play a game as your own assigned gender.
not really. one of the main purposes of games is to become the character in a way. its easier to do that when they are actually LIKE you

Because if I'm going to be watching a character from behind for the next 10+ hours they may as well have a nice bum

Well, I don't often choose to be the fairer sex in games, on occasion if given the choice (especially on replays) I have no problem. In all honesty I can't get too immersed in the world of mass effect, It's an enjoyable visual treat... but if I have to stare at somebodies ass for 30 hours, I'd prefer it be a great one.

Another reason why I often play female characters is because I find them more attractive. I like dressing/equipping them.

It's just like an artist who likes drawing women. The female form is just more aesthetically pleasing.

Just cause.

Ok to be more exact I tend to respect female characters more than males, when they are put into difficult situations. Guess to me it creates a different role for the female character, rather than just the damsel in distress, or the generic, flat bad ass girl with no real personality.

Not in RPGs it isn't. In RPGs the main purpose is to become more like the character yourself by roleplaying, not to make the character more like you.
