I sounds like shadow skill wants a flat corridor (possibly with a block of concrete to hide behind sometimes) filled with enemies : P No driving, no negotiating terrain, no puzzles. What's left? Oh, and since you can already complete the game using almost exclusively the gravity gun, making it even stronger would really make the rest of the arsenal a waste of time ~~

As for HL 3... How about a boss fight: Gravity(Free)man vs Portalwoman ^^ Or maybe as a special vs mode : /

Shadowskills note-

"Dear Valve, can you make Halo 4 plz!"

EDIT: On second thoughts, that might be quite good.....

Still, I disagree with most of what Shadow says...

I don't think a cover system, well implemented, would necessarily be bad- at least make Gordon more able to take advantage of cover, i.e. with crawl button.

in regard to the cover system, it's just a bad idea. If you want cover, use the cover that's already there. I can use the current objects as cover, like hiding behind burnt-out cars and such.

apart from that, no health recovery! no human, hazard suit or otherwise, can take a bullet to the chest and simply walk it off. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. got health right, where you take immediate damage from bullets, but you also start to bleed to death. you do not recover from waiting, you die from it. although HL2 should not implement bleeding, it should not have wolverine either.

the driving segments are a little bit shite, but not all that bad. although the scout-car section was interminably bad.

My wish is for no one to make a thread like this about Half Life 4 after Half Life 3 has been released.

Or for that matter, to just not listen to what everyone has said in this thread and continue to make the game they were going to.

5. The gravity gun should be able to pick up people from the start of the game.
gah! how silly is that, do you have any idea how game balance works? think of how mind numbingly simple episode 2 would have been if the uber-gravity gun stayed so, uh-oh that ant lion guard is throwing a car at me! no problem I'll just catch it and kill him in one go with it! uh-oh i have to kill this army of combine! no problem I'll just pick up the first one with my god hand and throw him at the rest! by the end of it the hunters would be running away from you and the dead hunters you're throwing at them...

Dear Valve - Shoot the next person who suggests the Portal Gun in Half-Life 3/Episode 3.

Seriously what the fuck guys!? Are you so blinded by Portal's Orgasmic Hype that you want the Portal gun no matter how much it would ruin the game?

My list:

Do not listen to fanboys.
Do not jump on the let's be like Halo/Cool
Put BugBait back.Nova Prospekt owned so hard.
Under no circumstances make any references to Portal, let alone giving it any significance to the storyline.
Definitely put in some new uber-achievement(One Free Bullet and Lil Rocket Man owned)
Bring back Barney.
Bring back Eli(The Advisor was a lie!)
Breen's Host Body!?
More Combine Weapons.

EDIT> A Crowgun - Crowbar ductapped to an SMG.

Sorry to disappoint, Jakub, but it certainly looks like Portal is going to become an integral part of the main Half-Life storyline.

Bad news jakub, if you remember in ep2 the ship, the Borealis was an aperture science ship, the same people who ran the facility in portal, so portal references seem likely.

Best suggestion so far! A line of Crowbar shooting/duct-taped weapons and the Force Unleashed style materials would make the eventual Crate/Barrel Apocalypse a beautiful, glorious thing.

I disagree about the driving sections though. In HL2 You're driving hand-built rebel vehicles. Chopped and welded together together from the bits off a Scrapheap. It makes sense that these vehicles take a little thing called skill to use.

Puzzle sections need skill aswell, skill and common sense, so I'm not surprised some people complain about them, what with an exponentially declining amount of common sense in the world. I think they're some of the best puzzles out there because of just that. You think like Gordon Freeman, like you're trying to survive and have to utilize a load of scavenged items to do just that.

You want the Super-Gravity Gun all the time? Madness! Activate it with a cheat for your lulz and leave the rest of us to play a challenging game. I just don't understand these people who want an easy ride all the time...

Wolverine Health makes slightly more sense than health-packs but then neither really make much sense maybe a hybrid of the two, if you want a realistic health system. But real people are far more fragile than they are in video games, so if you want a better health system you'd just end up with those annoying as hell 1-shot = death situations. It could work, but Half-Life does what it does for good reasons.

No. I recognize a plot device that is relatively untapped and underrused, and think it would do alot for the game, story, and overall tone of the whole experience, as opposed to your options of keeping it all the same. More combine weapons? Obviously. Bring back all the old character's, even out of death? Fuck no. Portal is a part of the Half Life 2 universe, therefore could very easily translate into the Half life 2 story. Hell, the next episode directly involves aperture science. If you don't like any of this, tough nuggets, look at the signs.

Dear Lord, hear my prayer.

Let Valve do what they have always done best,
Let them not be influenced by the mouths of the rest,
Let them work their art with skill and love,
Let them look at others and rise above.

Let it be as it was before,
Let regen health systems stay no more,
Let realism be left at the door
and let Alyx live, forevermore.

The bit about Eli was a joke and Barney isn't dead. Now tell me how would you use Portal Gun in Ep3?

Same with Shadow Skill's Gravity Gun suggestion, that would be like a built-in noclip feature.Of course you could put some limits onto it like in Portal but then how would you explain why this wall "works" while the one right next to it doesn't?Think rationally.

Portal Gun isn't a good plot device either.Okay we have a Portal Gun, what would be it's use? Sure it's cool but it's merely a gadget. You won't bring down Combine Empire with it.

Looking at the technical side, that would cause an extra year of delays.Anybody who nocliped Half-Life should know that the maps aren't THAT detailed or advanced and having the ability to travel anywhere on the map would prove it.So knowing Valve, they'd try their best in order to fix it - Delays,Delays,Delays.

If any of you still thinks it's a good idea, post a detailed plan on how you'd implement it.

PS:I know about Borealiss and just because it's the same company doesn't count as a Portal Reference.

The Post and what is said.
Ok. Firstly, the Portal gun alone, obviously(or so I thought), is not meant to hold up the entire plot alone. A nice little explanation of Aperture science, through Gordons eyes, would be excellent. I'm sure that if GLaDOS is active in any way, shape, or form, she will be very displeased about your particular garb, or folks you used to work for. And why does the portal gun have to stay forever? Eli said to DESTROY the borealis. What an excellent moment when Gordon Freeman destroy's everything to do with aperture science(Or at least whats left on the boat). You see, it could be a superb stopoff, where your now negotiating a single level, using the portal gun for a fixed amount of time, and then perhaps moving on to something else. Combine homeworld? Who knows.

I didn't realize this before, but I do now.
Half-life 2 already HAS one of the best cover systems in gaming history. It's called the gravity gun.
Lift a locker with the gravity gun, hold it before you. Voila, you are now protected from bullets almost completely. If that isn't cover, I don't know WHAT it is.

And I feel that the portal gun should stay in Portal, or in Portal-themed levels of a game. It just wouldn't work that well in a fully fleshed out map like those of most of Half-life 2.

I'm unsure about the portal gun in HL3. It could be a really good addition to gordon's arsenal, allowing you to shoot enemies that you wouldnt be able to get otherwise but then again it could be a large pile of canine faeces that is just trying to copy portal. I'm confident that valve will do the right thing though (whatever the hell that may be)

I reckon HL3s story should revolve around some massive counter-offensive. Humanity has rebuilt their armed forces and upgraded them with known Combine technology and assimilated the Vortigaunts, and launches their armed forces at the Combines homeworld, led by Gordon and Alyx. That would win so damn hard.

More weapons. Like crossbuilds between Human and Combine weapons.
More synth enemies. Striders and Gunships own.
That and NO COVER SYSTEM.
