Indicisivegamer's Half Life 2 thread got me thinking "What do I want from Half Life 3?"

Most of the stuff that came to mind dealt with the game interface and some minor gameplay tweaks here is what I came up with:

1. No more driving segments they sucked. They really fucking blew, I wanted to kill myself during the boat segments especially.

2. No more contrived puzzles they are just annoying after the fourth or fifth one

3. No more "Platforming segments" they always end up sucking in games not intended to actually be platformers Half Life is no exception.

4. A redesigned weapons selection UI, Crysis has a pretty good system and one I think is worth emulating. There should be an option to have the game pause while you are in the menu.

5. The gravity gun should be able to pick up people from the start of the game.

6. A cover system because lets face it, it's lame to see a shooter that does not really let the player use the environment to absorb some of the bullets flying in your direction and still shoot back without stepping all the way back into the line of fire.

7. A hybrid regenerating health/shield system. Resistance Fall of Man is a great example of what I would like so see though I would prefer carrying the health packs with me like in Black.

8. Assault rifle and shotgun combo (This is a real system.) weapon. The guns are a bit too muh of standard fare something like that would be something you almost never see in games.

9. Auto-shotgun, just beause pump action shotguns are overdone.

10. An answer to G-man's angle and hopefully his death if it does not happen by the end of episode 3.

What are your wishes for Half Life 3?

1. Better driving.
2. Better platforming or none at all.
3. Less crates.
4. Random generated areas and puzzles.
5. The random generated areas and puzzles have an impact on what difficulty you're playing on.
6. Give the hazard suit more abilities, like a built in melee enchantment to make your crowbar give out shocks. And bring back the long jump too.

Portals.
Realism. Just total, pure, awesome realism. Why must I stipulate further?
That includes graphic's, mind you.
I want the notable first person only angle, and disregard of cinematic foolery to be even more emphasized. Gordon moves and reacts to everything as if it were one of those awesome shaky cam preview's off FPS's we see so much. Except your playing this one.

Obviously valve cannot touch Half Life 3 until even more improvements with technology. Every game has to be able to totally trump the predecessor, and I just don't see games being able to do things on that level yet.

Pretty much none of what the topic creator said.
DON'T conform to whatever cute new hype of FPS games is paraded around. For the love of fuck, don't use fucking wolverine healing. Don't switch out the weapon system for one that's in another popular game. Don't add yet another game where your character gets glued to every single surface if you look at the cover button the wrong way. Don't remove all the puzzles because some people are too stupid. Don't remove the vehicle sections just because some people whine.

I agree that the buggy was kinda bad at times (but I loved the boat. why do people hate on the boat?!), and some of the platforming is less than optimal.
But seriously, a bullet list of fast flashy things that are popular at the time is SO not what Half-life is about. VERY much not what half-life is about. Jesus fucknuts on a pogo stick.

Dear Valve Software:
Please ignore everything that Shadow Skill has said, except for the last point.

I had to do a quick reality check on myself as after reading this discussion I thought I was encountering a rare bout with early early early onset Alzheimers, or that I had slipped into a parallel universe where the 3DO360 was reigning king of the console world. I hate to be the first one to tell you this, gentle reader, but Half Life three is already coming out, in small increments.

In other words; Half life 2 episodes are HL3 [http://pc.ign.com/articles/711/711560p1.html].

And there is only one or two left out of those.

Sorry.

Well that is funny because Half Life is actually a very conformist game. The puzzles if you want to call them that consist of block shifting, the "puzzles" are just contrived obstructions since 90% of the time one can see rather obvious alternative ways of solving the problem at hand. Half Life 2 decided to jump on the bandwagon of adding shitty vehicle sequences to the game in an attempt to break things up. Please Half Life 2 is far from a game that does not conform to trends. The weapon selection system in Half Life 2 is just an exercise in clutter its not a good interface at all. It makes actually looking at the different weapons completely pointless since it makes more sense to just bind keys to the different weapon classes.

I joined just to say the only thing you are right about is the weapon system being cluttered and they need to answer some questions. But from what I've heard the answers are pretty satisfying, as in NOT EXPLAINING IN A FUCKING CUT SCENE WHO THE GMAN IS. Also, I enjoyed the driving sections a fair bit. It seems like you complaining about EVERYTHING in the game, what do you like about the games.PLEASE NO COVER SYSTEM GOD NO. That might be the worst idea up there. And a regenerating health system would make the game much much easier than it is already.

One more thing, but what is Nerkcon talking about random generated puzzles and areas? I'm pretty sure that everywhere you go, you go for a reason.

Continue the trend of the episodes, i.e. Alyx Vance is with you all the time. This was the biggest improvement of the episodes, and it erased my complaints about the game being all about getting from point A to point B. Most of Half-Life is just that, but it's much more enjoyable with Alyx around.

Don't change the core gameplay of Half-Life. No wolverine healing, for a start. No cover beyond being able to look around a corner. I want to be able to jump right into Half-Life 3, with my only "training" being that I replayed Half Life 2: Episode Three while HL3 downloaded on Steam.

Different kinds of puzzles. Have a cabal come up with 10 new generic puzzles for use in HL3. Use old ones sparingly. But keep up the idea of using puzzles where most games use boss fights. Here's a random idea: Alyx and Gordon have to bring a massive Combine portal online themselves, in an extremely complicated process that makes you feel like Gordon really IS a scientist. Then Combine soldiers show up and try to kill them.

If you add any new weapons, make them sci-fi type weapons. I will accept the possibility of a human sniper rifle, but all other new weapons must be based on advanced technology. You can have some of them fill roles suggested earlier (an automatic shotgun equivalent would be epic) but make them sci-fi.

Bring in the Portal Gun.

Finally, a story request. Send Alyx and Gordon to Xen. Have Gordon get the super gravity gun early on. In the final stage, enhance the gravity gun into what I shall call the Alpha-Omega Gravity Gun. As in, "I am the Alpha and the Omega." You do the rest.

Oh, and if EA tries to buy Valve, beat their reps to death with a crowbar, and send their corpses to EA.

All I want is an opportunity to painfully kill one of those damn Combine slugs. Like, have one strapped into some horrible torture apparatus, and I can flip switches and levers to inflict all kinds of excruciating terrors on the vile thing.

I thought that most of the things you said were bad, were actually quite good. If you REALLY want to kill the gman or chuck people with the Gravity Gun, maybe gmod is for you.
The gman is a mystery. The genius of his character is his disjointedness and mysteriousness and that stuck out for me. I want to use MY OWN imagination, thank you very much, they can't just spoon-feed info to you.
Killing combine Advisors would be hell-fun. But how to is the problem. I mean, psychic floating slugs!!! FTW?
Driving sucks, I do have to admit. But stopping off to take down a Combine checkpoint is good fun mid-drive.
And gameplay issues.
I think, if you want cover, get it yourself. Don't sit, expecting a "Press X to take cover" to pop up, because the game also bases itself on making you figure things out for yourself.
A supercharged gravity gun would be wank-tastic, because it just makes the game too easy. And the same with pausing the game to switch weapon. Would you seriously expect that to happen in real life?
Those are my thoughts. I just think Valve should provide more in the intrigue, puzzles and the adrenaline-pumping skirmishes, but keep heading the same way in regard to everything else.

Oh, and quit it with the "see-saw" puzzle. If they do that one more time...*mumblegrumble*

And who DOESN'T EA attempt to buy out nowadays? The don't even make good games, and they're still up themselves.

I don't think they'll do that because that form of the gravity gun is too powerful and would take the fun out of the game.
They did try this in HL2 Ep1 while your in the Citedal at the start but then the gun went back to normal.

Enemies that react to being shot, or just state some where that they are wearing some kevlar hybrid interweave that absorbs the pain & shock of the wound but not the damage itself...

just so I don't have to make it up myself in some forum somewhere

apart from that, Valve...just keep doing what you do :)

The tech they are using for the Force Unleashed: namely DMM (flexible and dynamically breakable objects) and Euphoria (Gives NPCs more realistic reactions, even when being thrown about in mid air).

Definitely the next step up from just using Havok for rigid body physics.

You mention so many things in other games that should be in HL - but I want Valve to come up with original ideas rather than copied from another game.

As for the rest - thats what HL has always been about; the puzzles, the platforming segments etc The only thing I would change is the set pieces.

I'll add if they were to do a HL-3 I wouldn't want them to release it for years - a bit like Starcraft 2
