Also: Yes, why? =)
Because as you can see. People obviously think of us as stupid =P
So I kinda did'nt want to be the only stupid one.
Seriously it's because I wanted to see who knew, and who did'nt ..
Fair enough.

The lambda symbol is also used in math to denote eigenvalues which are used in eigenvectors

You don't know that. They haven't finished the last one yet.

OK, farfetched at best. But anything can happen, story-wise, at this point.

So they titled the first game after a plot point intending to explain it three games later?

Uhm .. The lower message was not meant for you ... I mean I did'nt take your comment too much of critisicm, it just appeared to me that you thought it was too fucking obvious to make a thread for.

And yeah. I'm not laughing, I'm actually rather suprised and impressed, and overall amazed. But you probaly allready knew that
You are vastly overestimating my MIND READING abilities. :p
Oh, I thought that was immediately obvious by reading my post =P
Perhaps I've spent too much time on this thread "[link]http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.87930?p=1&page=7#1428378[/link]"

It's not necessarily about intention. Sometimes stories decide where the writer is going to take them.

That being said, I was merely jesting. I highly doubt they would come up with a plot point involving some metaphorical "half-life" of humanity or something. Although, come to think of it, that would actually be pretty cool!

That does kinda make sense though. Maybe the title is just intended to be a metaphor. Eh, who knows.

That would be brilliant =D

Yes I know what a nuclear half life is. I also know that a video game half life is a remarkably average game that gamers insist is the second coming of Souplex.
Perhaps a "half-life" could also be a definition of how long it is before an internet poster makes another remarkably average post, believing themselves to be the second coming of Half-Life.

I personally doubt there is really any reason for them calling Half-Life "Half-Life", other than it fitting in with the science theme. Hmm, I wonder what the half-life of the catalyst that caused all the hassle in the first game is...

Not only is Half Life a scientific term, so is Blue Shift. Also, the two connected mods Parallax: Someplace Else and Minerva: Metastasis followed this trend.

Blue Shift: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_shift

Parallax: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallax

Metastasis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metastasis

Oddly enough, the only one that actually makes sense and is somewhat referenced in game is Parallax.

EDIT: Also, awesome story about Minerva: Metastasis. First off, it is considered canon by Valve, so if you haven't give it a shot, do so- it is AMAZING, and the level design is on par, if not better than, Half Life 2. Also, it did so well and was so well designed that the creator has been picked up by Valve and is currently working on both the sequel to Metastasis and Half Life 2: Episode 3!

What about ... er... "Xeno's paradox" I believe its called? Where if you keep halving you can never decay fully.

Opposing Force is also a physics reference. It's reminiscent of Newton's 3rd Law.

But there are only ever a finite number of things decaying, so eventually you reach a point where they have either all decayed, or they haven't. Unfortunately it is impossible to predict when all the molecules will have decayed, because it is a random process. The half-life is a convenient measure of the rate of decay that requires no reference to the point at which all the molecules have decayed.

Oh, really? Interesting, I thought it was just directly referencing the fact that you're playing as the actual force that is opposed to Black Mesa... cool. Thanks for the bit of info!

I love learning stuff like this =D

So, Valve just has a 'science' theme for the Half Life series? Makes sense... I guess.

I wonder what if the titles have any significance (metaphors?).

Given the game was based on theoretical science, the name is great. I knew what Half Life was before i player 'Half Life' though.
