Yeah, the name was used because it sounded 'science-ey' enough. No real significance.Valiance said:It doesn't.Jarc42 said:How does half life relate to Half Life? Always wondered.
Fair enough.Daye.04 said:Because as you can see. People obviously think of us as stupid =PInsomniactk said:(...)
Also: Yes, why? =)
So I kinda did'nt want to be the only stupid one.
Seriously it's because I wanted to see who knew, and who did'nt ..
A brief google search yielded no good results.AgentNein said:Yeah, the name was used because it sounded 'science-ey' enough. No real significance.Valiance said:It doesn't.Jarc42 said:How does half life relate to Half Life? Always wondered.
So they titled the first game after a plot point intending to explain it three games later?not4prophet said:You don't know that. They haven't finished the last one yet.
OK, farfetched at best. But anything can happen, story-wise, at this point.
Oh, I thought that was immediately obvious by reading my post =PMaxTheReaper said:You are vastly overestimating my MIND READING abilities.Daye.04 said:Uhm .. The lower message was not meant for you ... I mean I did'nt take your comment too much of critisicm, it just appeared to me that you thought it was too fucking obvious to make a thread for.
And yeah. I'm not laughing, I'm actually rather suprised and impressed, and overall amazed. But you probaly allready knew that![]()
That does kinda make sense though. Maybe the title is just intended to be a metaphor. Eh, who knows.not4prophet said:That being said, I was merely jesting. I highly doubt they would come up with a plot point involving some metaphorical "half-life" of humanity or something. Although, come to think of it, that would actually be pretty cool!
Yeah, actually, yeah!not4prophet said:It's not necessarily about intention. Sometimes stories decide where the writer is going to take them.

Perhaps a "half-life" could also be a definition of how long it is before an internet poster makes another remarkably average post, believing themselves to be the second coming of Half-Life.Souplex said:Yes I know what a nuclear half life is. Opposing Force is also a physics reference. It's reminiscent of Newton's 3rd Law.ZeroMachine said:Not only is Half Life a scientific term, so is Blue Shift. Also, the two connected mods Parallax: Someplace Else and Minerva: Metastasis followed this trend.

Oddly enough, the only one that actually makes sense and is somewhat referenced in game is Parallax.
But there are only ever a finite number of things decaying, so eventually you reach a point where they have either all decayed, or they haven't. Unfortunately it is impossible to predict when all the molecules will have decayed, because it is a random process. The half-life is a convenient measure of the rate of decay that requires no reference to the point at which all the molecules have decayed.J-Man said:What about ... er... "Xeno's paradox" I believe its called? Where if you keep halving you can never decay fully.
Oh, really? Interesting, I thought it was just directly referencing the fact that you're playing as the actual force that is opposed to Black Mesa... cool. Thanks for the bit of info!Lukeje said:Opposing Force is also a physics reference. It's reminiscent of Newton's 3rd Law.ZeroMachine said:Not only is Half Life a scientific term, so is Blue Shift.
