It's pretty basic: shoot stuff and try not to die.

Which end?

I will not say... you must figure it out for yourself!

Take a step back, play the original Halo, then skip 2 entirely and go directly to 3.

I don't like Halo 2, but Halo 3 was kind of decent.

All the Halo games are pretty easy, so don't sweat. You'd probably want tos tart with Halo 1 though. The first three levels smoothly introduce you to pretty much all the weapons and how you use them and through out the game, more things are revealed like Tanks, Ghosts etc. By the time you've finished with Halo you'll know exactly how to take on any situation in Halo 2 but you'll have some new guns/techniques so you're free to experiement and learn some new stuff. Halo 3 takes this further.

But it's an FPS. All you need to do is shoot the guy in front of you, and if you have trouble with that then lower the difficulty. Halo 2 is hardly ARMA II or Operation: Flashpoint, you don't need advice to play it.
Daemon pretty much sums it up. Shoot things, thats all that is needed for the lower difficulties. Learn to use cover when things get dicey doing the harder missions, thats really all you need to know.

This..If you're going to get into a new series, start at the beginning..And if all you really want is the multiplayer, 3 or ODST would make more sense.
EB didn't have Halo 1, but I will be tracking it down. I'm not interested in multiplayer.
IF you can't even amazon it torrent borrow it from someone
I'm positive getting a copy, whether it be from another EB, Game, ebay, some random online game store, won't be a problem. Amazon is. The UK and US both refuse to sell me games. Every single time I order a game, and the buyer says they post overseas, they refuse to sell me games.

I picked up 2 today because it was there and cheap. It's my preference to start a story from the beginning, so since most here hold the story in such high regard, I'll wait till I get the first installment.

Honestly, I wouldn't even bother with Halo, but goddam, Red vs Blue dug its heels right into my consciousness.

The shotgun is your best friend, and so is the rocket launcher.

But you must use the rocket launcher wisely.

Also, don't charge Hunters headfirst. They will crush you into a sticky red and green paste.
The shotgun is most definitely not your friend. It has less range than a sword lunge. I'm not kidding. Stick with plasma rifles.

Then why bother with Halo at all? There are much better single player FPS with far better stories. Most of the gameplay in FPS' is so similar now anyways. Tried Bioshock or or something like that? It doesn't even have multiplayer.

I have Bioshock and Jericho. I have't played them yet, but I have watched friends play them at their places. I'll get around to them, promise.

The thing about Halo is that the franchise is just so big and I've avoided it for so long because fps isn't my genre. I became a rabid Red vs Blue fan earlier in the year, so I feel obligated to least give Halo a try.

I'm new to fps, multiplayer isn't a good idea for me at this point. If I do end up enjoying Halo, and get somewhat decent, then I'll seriously consider multiplayer.

Ah well that makes sense. Personally I'm not a Halo fan. Its fine as far as console multiplayer goes but I've never been a fan of its story, guns, or level design. Never was able to get into it or see what all the hubbub was about. Not to say its bad it just isn't my thing. I've always preferred pc gaming for FPS', merely because of the whole keyboard/mouse control scheme I think. But to each his own. My friends ragged on me to give Halo a try for years and I played it for a few hours and it just didn't catch.

As a heads up, no matter how good you are in single player multiplayer FPS is an entirely different pain in the ass.

Ignoring that, I kind of agree with this lot that you should play the first halo before you give H2 a real try. If only so you know what the hell is going on come Halo 2's start.

Also, I personally feel the original Halo was better done. The single player of Halo went down hill from there, which was a shame as it had some things going for it.

"things I should never do."

Carry on playing.

Seriously, if you're an "FPS noob" a big bundle of averageness won't make the genre particularly appealing to you. On the other hand I suppose you COULD enjoy it (I don't see how), and you'll only go on to find bigger and far better things.

Every cloud, I suppose.

Yeah, I know. I figured if I'm going to be playing with and against others with a gun, I'd last longer than 3 seconds if I can aim on command. I've played some of Dirge of Cerberus and it was a nightmare. I just suck with a gun. I have played House of the Dead with a friend, but my limited knowledge tells me rail shooters are a different beast.

I've also done paintball. I shall never join the army. No, sir-ee.

I'll wait till I get Halo 1.

atleast they didnt completely ruin it though, it still felt like halo, unlike say... Farcry 2, that was a completely different game to me, where as halo 2, 3, ODST still had the same feeling, and graphics engine

Maybe pick up a copy of ODST. That one's pretty fun and I actually like the use of a prominent story and a sub-story.

Fanboy: BUT THE HALO GAMES HAVE A HUGE STORY AND UNIVERSE AND GUNZ AND CHARACTERS!!!!!!1!

Me: Yeah but I could come up with all of that from one afternoon of sticking a pencil up my bum and singing the national anthem.

Fanboy: . . . FAGXOR!!! *teabags my dead spartan*

Me: That's what I thought.

I just wish that damn rookie would actually talk. It would make me feel disconnected from him but I'm one of those strong silent types too.

When using the rocket launcher it is easier to aim at the enemies feet/ ground near the enemy than to aim at the enemy itself

jumping is also good as it's easier to hit the ground near the enemy when you're higher than them, it also makes it harder for other people with rocket launchers to hit you

This is what I was going to post, but when I tell people to start at the beginning of a series they throw a major bitchfit EG: "THE GRAPHICS ON PLAYSTATION SUCK THATS GAY".
Well, that isn't me. My first console was a NES, we didn't have fancy HD back then. Also, my primary genre is JRPG, I'm willing to ignore blocky pixels and sus dialogue if the story and battle mechanics are good.

I'm fully aware of the evolution of Halo's graphics, the only reason I bought this title is because of Red vs Blue. I squeed like a fool when I checked out the game booklet to see the Warthog (go the Puma!) and the energy sword (Tucker's sweet key-sword). I am quite the freak.

Halo 1 is better, but I enjoyed Halo 2.

The first half of both Halos is the best, then the level design gets really repetitive. If the gameplay weren't there to save things, the later levels wouldn't be worth playing at all. What isn't repetitive is repetitive and crap.

That said, keep in mind I still love Halo 1 and like Halo 2. So... I would say the gameplay makes up for a lot. Anyway, I mostly just replay the first five levels of Halo 1. The levels never go exactly the same way twice, thanks to the great AI.

Halo 1 local multi is MUCH better than Halo 2 MP. Seriously. Halo 2 is all power weapons, spawn memorizing and weapon hoarding. Halo 1 gives everyone the best pistol ever right at the start, so every player has a chance no matter what the other guy is carrying. Also, I love the Plasma Rifle and Halo 2 nerfed it. Bleah.

Ok, heres my opinion of which game for which thing you want,

Story, Characters and Plot: Halo 1
Fun Campaign, and Cliffhanger: Halo 2
Crazy Fun Multiplayer: ANY
General Disappointment: Halo 3.
