I haven't played it, but it has to be this hands down

It'd be hard enough just putting up with that Boss's laugh.

Well, I certainly wasn't expecting the OP to say a game that I beat when I was ten.

OT: Hard because of terrible design/buggy out the ass: Sonic '06 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_%2706].

Legitimately hard (though sometimes to an unfair degree): I Wanna Be The Guy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_wanna_be_the_guy]; Super Meat Boy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Meat_Boy]; Demon's Souls [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon%27s_Souls]/Dark Souls [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Souls].

EDIT: I think this one transcends normal categorizing, really. I think most people would agree it's unfair in its difficulty, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who genuinely enjoyed the challenge? Battletoads [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battletoads].

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Ninja Gaiden (the original) probably fits in there somewhere, and I've personally never been able to beat any of the old Super Mario platformers (raised on Sonic here). I'm sure I could probably come up with a whole bunch more if I really tried, especially for the terrible design section, but I can't really be arsed to do it.

-(would probably also accept Super Meat Boy or some obscure bastard old school Nintendo Hard Game)
And that's exactly why I'm nominating Astyanax... or Ninja Gaiden :p

The SNES gameSuper Ghouls and ghosts.
With so much stuff going on and your character only got two hits and it's game over. Til this day I can never get passed the first level.

Driver 2, why? It was at points such a buggy and laggy mess that I broke 2 copy's over it (first kept crashing in Havana, second copy didnt work at all) on my third copy I actually managed to finish it....

A friend of mine had a Playstation when we were younger, and neither of us could even finish the car park tutorial in the first game.

OT: Ninja Gaiden 2 was a fairly miserable (and short-lived) experience. I think I got to the second boss on the horse and then gave up.

Can a game be considered hard because of it's players?

Because if so, League of Legends. I really *want* to like that game. I honestly do. But 9/10 players i've played with/against are either so bad that they cause their team to lose or massive jerks who stop the game being enjoyable. It's not fun for either team if someone wins because the other team was really bad or their team was unfairly good ( or had players with full runes/masteries).

I want to play more and enjoy it, but I lose most of my games for no good reason. It's far too hard because of it's players.

Dark souls is not hard its just unforgiving. people who think its hard are too impatient or come to a situation unprepared.

QWOP.
Seriously.
That game is impossible.
Questing the World for One Piece? I'm unfamiliar with that acronym.
Its the keys that you use to play the game, the name of the protagonist and the name of the game.
QWOP Qwop and Qwop respectively. Google it, and try to make 100m
I managed 100m on my 5th try or so. It's not that hard, it's just boring.

I think I will stick with I Wanna Be The Guy for this thing. Of course there's Tales of The Abyss for PS2 on unknown where there's a boss that actually takes several days to beat and all attacks kill in one hit.

Also I don't understand people who wants to say Ninja Gaiden 2 is so incredibly hard. It's hard, but it's not that hard.

The hardest game I have ever encountered was Star Wars Jedi Knight Outcast II. Because the levels are sooo long and you don't know where anything is.
Both of it's predecessors, Dark Forces and Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight were much harder, IMO. The series actually got progressively easier as it went.

Anyway, hardest game I ever played, is either Super Meat Boy, or one of those old Sega Master System games that I don't remember the names of. Seriously, a few of those were almost impossible. Hardest in recent memory though, is definitely SMB.

The mission you ment is called "The Interview" but I agree, when I was younger that mission was hard, but still that one became a walk in the park unlike the Driver 2 missions.

Apolo 18, the official NASA game.

The game has a 200+ page manual. It begins by having you take a written test depicting several math scenarios required for navigation, thrust control, etc.

If you pass that exam, you get to simulate your mission in the in-game simulator. Then you do it a few more times.

Then, if you don't screw up those simulations, the game actually lets you play the mission, but you better keep that manual handy. Oh, and the entire game is buttons, switches and nobs. And math. Lots and lots of math.

I've played games for most of my 31 years, but that is the one game I know would be utterly IMPOSSIBLE if you're not an astronaut. And I've lost the manual, so there goes any chance of ever playing it again.

There are some really nasty Mario romhacks out there. I actually tracked this one down and lemme tell you, the guy playing is doing very well to even make the miniscule progress he makes.

I'm voting for Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts... although I'd be willing to cede the NES predecessors (which I never got the chance to play) would probably be as hard/harder. I tried getting my kid to play it, and he quit within minutes. Kids these days, mollycoddled by games that don't teach you to play by beating you into the dirt until you learn...
